To be annoyed by my weight but not my size?

chatenoire · 07/02/2024 08:46

This is just venting... But I'm fairly heavy for my size and always have been.

I'm currently 68kg / 1.59m and a size 8 or 13y in kids clothes.

You can actually see my abs and most certainly don't look chubby but definitely not skinny either. I'm very much happy with my size though.

I don't really lift (15lbs is the heaviest dumbbell I own) but I do workout.

It's really annoying because I never feel my weight is a true reflection of my size.

Even at my skinniest (around 52-53kg) I looked way too thin even though for all terms and purposes I was a healthy weight. (I was a size 4 at the time).

But if you can see your abs your body fat percentage must be in the region of 20%, so you’re not heavy for your size?

CorylusAgain · 07/02/2024 08:51

Can you explain why this upsets you? No one else knows your weight and if you stopped weighing yourself you wouldn't know either!
It's illogical so there must be something underlying your feelings

Zoomerang · 07/02/2024 08:51

If You’re healthy and look good, why do numbers on a scale (that only you will see, let alone care about) matter?

missshilling · 07/02/2024 08:54

If you have high a high proportion of muscle to fat, you will weigh more than somebody of the same size who has a lower proportion of muscle to fat.

RausageSoul · 07/02/2024 08:54

Stop weighing yourself?

NarnianQueen · 07/02/2024 08:56

I'm always rubbish at these kind of threads because I just can't work out how you can be 5foot 2, weigh over 10 and a half stone and be a size 8?! Have I got those measurements wrong? I'm 5'4, about 10 stone and a size 12!

gannett · 07/02/2024 08:56

You're right that weight has nothing to do with size (nor health, really). Resistance training will burn fat and make you healthier (and look better), but you'll put on weight from the added muscle. Never understood why so many people are obsessed with weight as the only metric that matters.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 07/02/2024 08:58

Have you checked this on decent scales eg at the doctors?
It does seem to vary a lot - a good friend is exactly the same height as me and about same build or marginally thinner yet weighs about 5kg more than me

Is OP in the UK because I agree that doesn't sound like UK Size 8 measurements? Maybe a US 8?
I don't mean that in a cheeky way, I'm not a size 8 either.

Butterdishy · 07/02/2024 09:00

Are you sure that weight is accurate? Or are your size 8s all stretchy? Seems very unlikely unless you're extremely muscular.
But generally, if you're a healthy size and active, don't worry too much about what the scales say

Yes, they're UK sizes... My jeans are 25, and in US sizes I'm around a 4 (which is a UK 8).

Fair enough, sizes do vary, especially if it's items with stretch.
Maybe your scales are a bit off?

AdventuresInDogDayCare · 07/02/2024 09:05

If you don’t have much fat and are healthy, why are you bothered?

Notcontent · 07/02/2024 09:05

That sounds a little odd. I am the same height, size 8 and weight 18 kg less!

chatenoire · 07/02/2024 09:07

That's definitely me, so not a size 14 like you'd expect

I am always heavier than I look.

I am currently a size 12, 5’4” and weight 12st 10lb.

My friend is the same height, weighs 12st 7lb and is a size 18. she made me weigh myself in front of her a few weeks ago as she would not believe I only weighed a few pounds more because we look so different.

I’m the sort of person when I go a a dr they weigh me twice as they think the scales are off (I was consultant led in my last pregnancy as my BMI was 40 then, he weighed me three times the first time I saw him and asked if I had rocks in my pockets 🤣).

Even when I was a size 8 in my 20s I was 10 stone.

Never lifted a weight in my life. I joke My bones must be made of lead.

MsPloddingBottom · 07/02/2024 09:08

But what is the problem here?

Are you unhappy with your body? If not, I don't get it.

Veryinteresting24 · 07/02/2024 09:08

I don’t get those numbers at all sorry. 10 1/2 stone and in children’s clothes?

Veryinteresting24 · 07/02/2024 09:09

I do agree with pps. It doesn’t matter!

Inthebitterend · 07/02/2024 09:10

I think if I was a size 8 or could fit into teenagers clothes, I wouldn't care about numbers on the scale. I'd kill to be that small!

I've always felt weight was a fairly objective number (or at least that's the general way of thinking).

@chatenoire in the nicest way possible, what do you hope to achieve from this post?
Do you eat reasonably well, get regular exercise, feel happy in yourself? If yes then the numbers really don't matter that much, if at all.

FiveShelties · 07/02/2024 09:11

I am 1.63m and 65.5kgs. So taller and lighter ---- and jealous! I would never get into a size 8.

Veryinteresting24 · 07/02/2024 09:12

You look very nice and completely normal in your picture and you are happy with your size and you are healthy so your actual weight doesn’t matter.

Being 'that small' isn't necessarily a good aim though - eating well, getting regular exercise, visiting the GP with any health concerns, and accepting that we're not all going to be the same shape is what's important.
