To be annoyed by my weight but not my size?

chatenoire · 07/02/2024 08:46

This is just venting... But I'm fairly heavy for my size and always have been.

I'm currently 68kg / 1.59m and a size 8 or 13y in kids clothes.

You can actually see my abs and most certainly don't look chubby but definitely not skinny either. I'm very much happy with my size though.

I don't really lift (15lbs is the heaviest dumbbell I own) but I do workout.

It's really annoying because I never feel my weight is a true reflection of my size.

Even at my skinniest (around 52-53kg) I looked way too thin even though for all terms and purposes I was a healthy weight. (I was a size 4 at the time).

That's where you're wrong, I'm not looking for validation or compliments. I'm venting because the people who are close to me can't relate. My DH kind of gets it now.

My best friend is bigger than me and around my same weight, and my DM thinks I'm too thin.

I'm truly happy, it's just annoying. I don't need validation to be happy with myself, my mirror/ clothes are more than enough validation.

I don't discuss my weight with anyone. Sometimes people ask me and I will tell them roughly.

Why are you discussing it with people who are close to you and your friends?

Gringlebat · 07/02/2024 11:52

You must be super lean. I’m exactly the same height as you but 46 kg, so am over 20kg lighter than you (Asian and petite build so normal BMI here). Yet because I am untoned slob with a saggy belly and big boobs I am not always a size 8 and can vary between 6 and 12.

But Tesco definitely does do vanity sizing. As do most supermarkets and Primark. And it’s odd that you are going looking for 13y old clothing when there is plenty available in adult high street shops to fit you. Eg bershka and H and M.

I think you have a disorder where you want to be seen as tiny. Thus you go seeking out teen clothes so you can tell people how small you are. That’s not normal. I am sure your weight is the least interesting thing about you. You need help for this obsession.

chatenoire · 07/02/2024 11:26

Well believe it or not it's a size 8, sure it's from Tesco's so maybe some vanity sizing but still a regular size 8.

It's nuts that this is what you've chosen to engage with. Try something not lycra. It's not healthy to obsess about your size to the extent you need to prove it on the internet.

Hagpie · 07/02/2024 12:06

Ding ding ding!

OP as someone who used to have an eating disorder I can sniff those kind of thoughts a mile away. The “kid’s size clothes” really gave it away as well as the picture.

I don’t keep scales in my home AT ALL. I’m going on holiday this year and I’ll probably freestyle my suitcases, yes it’s that serious. Chuck them in the bin. You are healthy and you’ve achieved your goal. There are so many (better) indicators of health than that which you have already listed.

I’m recovered and only 10 years later that I can even read other people’s measurements. That comparison will get in your head -from the happiness that you’re smaller than some and feeling of failure that you’re bigger than others. None of that is healthy.

With love my love, you need help. ❤️‍🩹

HungryandIknowit · 07/02/2024 12:10

Agree with others. Sounds like you need therapy and to throw away the scales. Ask doctors not to tell you your weight. All the best.

icallshade · 07/02/2024 12:13

Why do you care?
Everyone is different.
To contrast, I weigh 110kg.im 5ft 10 and a size 14.
I doubt anyone would believe my weight either but it's not something I waste amy time thinking about.
Let it go OP

I like colorful clothes and that's why I buy kid's clothes. Or they're cheaper... I mean my kids joggers were cheaper or for example the PJs Liked were not available in adults size.

I look like you OP and wear size 8.. I'm curvy and chunky of leg and 5 foot tall. It makes you look chunkier 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️... everyone is being a bit mean tbh ..

I don't make the clothes 🤷‍♀️

Whapples · 07/02/2024 13:07

Amusing that others don’t believe this can be the correct size for their weight. I’m size 12-14 and 85kg. Not muscular or very tall (5’6”) but pretty average in size to look at. I’m overweight according to my BMI but my doctor has said before that based on my actual body size, I shouldnt worry! I’m disabled so can’t excuse any more than I already do anyway and already eat decently. It’s actually nice to know other people have the same thing going on and also struggle to accept their weight in terms of numbers though!

workshy46 · 07/02/2024 13:15

I think weight is generally more indicative than sizing as there is soo much vanity sizing now. In saying that at your weight I would expect you to look a lot bigger. You look lean and slim, probably more a size 10 than 8 though.

Gia79 · 07/02/2024 13:21

You look strong and even muscular, and your arms stood out to me. I have a very basic understanding of BMI but I still know that it’s pointless looking at it if one is a body builder or they have more muscle than average. You weigh more due to muscle weighing more than fat despite it being leaner. But I’m certain you know all this. If you’re that concerned, just go to a GP who I’m sure will reiterate and go into far greater depth and reassure you that you’re healthy and have nothing to worry about.

When I was 68kg at 5ft3, I was overweight but I have very little muscle and narrow hips and shoulders and a tiny waist etc. so if I’m 68kg it’s mainly fat!

Gia79 · 07/02/2024 13:22

Ps I feel soft at 68kg whereas you look firm and toned.

NaughtybutNice77 · 07/02/2024 13:25

So you're asking AIBU to be bothered? Yes. If you're not 'over fat' and otherwise healthy I don't know why you'd care. Surely your weight indicates dense bones or high muscle mass....all desirable.

I don't think the majority are being mean actually.

JemimaNutkin · 07/02/2024 13:52

I'm the same 155cm and 64kg, also size 8, I do a fair amount of exercise but wouldn't consider myself visibly muscley. I know how you feel, it's disheartening to see an overweight BMI even though others say you look fine. When I was pregnant and had my 12 week scan at the hospital they looked at my notes and said "I can see the midwife must've entered your weight wrong because you're not that much" I'm obviously just very dense! 😂

Friendlyfishfinger · 07/02/2024 13:53

NarnianQueen · 07/02/2024 08:56

I'm always rubbish at these kind of threads because I just can't work out how you can be 5foot 2, weigh over 10 and a half stone and be a size 8?! Have I got those measurements wrong? I'm 5'4, about 10 stone and a size 12!

Same. Bone density must be immense. Muscle tone at that weight would be such that size 8 clothes wouldn’t fit.

I’m an 8, 5’6”, and weigh 51kg. I know we’re all different but I find it crazy how much things like weight can apparently vary.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 07/02/2024 13:53

Floralsofa · 07/02/2024 11:18

Seen this picture before and you don't look a size 8.

Shots fired 😂

Given that I’ve just jumped on the scales, I think I agree.

CharlotteBog · 07/02/2024 14:04

Everyone on this thread is a size 8 it seems!

chatenoire · 07/02/2024 14:06

The range is anything between size 6 and 10, the median is definitely 8.

I have short legs which I've always thought make me look chunkier.

But why does it matter enough to warrant multiple posts? Wear what size fits you, nobody else is going to care unless you bring it up.

boredybored · 07/02/2024 14:16

@Wasbedeudetetdas maybe but I get this alot .. I obvs don't start thread about it but when people give me a 🤔 look when they find out my size for whatever reason . ( I work in retail )
Being short makes you look so much bigger .

theemmadilemma · 07/02/2024 14:19

Why is it annoying? It's science.

You're clearly relatively athletic, hence you have more muscle. Dense muscle takes up less room than fat. So you can hold 5kg of dense muscle looking much slimmer than someone holding 5kg of fat.

See, science.

I don't tend to discuss my vital statistics with anyone other than close family or friends, it's just not something that comes up. I also think this OP maybe has deeper issues (for want of a better word) on this subject, and I hope she gets the support she needs).
