To be annoyed by my weight but not my size?

chatenoire · 07/02/2024 08:46

This is just venting... But I'm fairly heavy for my size and always have been.

I'm currently 68kg / 1.59m and a size 8 or 13y in kids clothes.

You can actually see my abs and most certainly don't look chubby but definitely not skinny either. I'm very much happy with my size though.

I don't really lift (15lbs is the heaviest dumbbell I own) but I do workout.

It's really annoying because I never feel my weight is a true reflection of my size.

Even at my skinniest (around 52-53kg) I looked way too thin even though for all terms and purposes I was a healthy weight. (I was a size 4 at the time).

how does a pound of muscle weight more than a pound of fat?

DownWhichOfLate · 07/02/2024 16:29

@MikeRafone - you are wearing baggy clothing so you’ll look bulkier. And you need to learn the slimming pose of slightly twisting your body! 😃

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/02/2024 16:29

I understand what you mean there @chatenoire

You are a similar height to me and I weigh a bit more than you - maybe around 72 kg but I am very flabby and a size 16! At a size 8 many years ago I was around 8 stone (50 kg?)

It's odd how much difference it can make to your size/weight when you are really toned .

It doesn't but muscle is denser and takes up less space so where 1lb of fat sits 2-5lb of muscle can be hence saying muscles weighs more then fat.

OP honestly BMI is completely outdated a d a simple calculation doesn't work out your BMI you actually have to be dunked into a tank of water, know the volume of tank of water and then the displacement amount etc to accurately undertake BMI calculations.

I would say from photos your muscular and you have reasonable boob size which is a lot of weight in itself.

Don't concentrate on BMI calculations or the scales go for fit of clothes and if you feel healthy.

God women and weight - I can’t imagine men chatting for several pages about this.

I threw out my scales in 2007. The only time I know how much I weigh is if I visit my mum and sometimes I hop on her ancient scales. I’m the same size i have been since I was about 20 and I’m almost 50 now and had 2 kids (I say the same size, obvs in clothes I’m much smaller as the 10-12 I used to be is now 6-8 and I’m 5’10)

Not obsessing over it is key- eat healthily, stop when you’re full, exercise daily whether you feel like it or not (you won’t ever feel worse for doing it) and that’s it.

Gym bores of course they do - but it’s all about how to put on weight, build muscle etc.

I don't think you do actually @MikeRafoneI think you look very slim and narrow. The OP posted in 'skinny position' too, body twisted so she's side on while you've gone full frontal which tends to look bigger. Yet you still don't.

I’m not wearing baggy clothing 😳

DownWhichOfLate · 07/02/2024 21:30

Oh! But they look like trackie bottoms and a hoodie? Stick on some Lycra and do the “make me slim” side twist and you’ll look a lot slimmer. If you want to. Sounds like you’re super strong 💪

When I was unfit doctors did tell me they really mattered. That was when I was in my teens/early 20s.

I'm now smaller and lighter and much fitter than my mother ever was.

Even my bloods always show I'm a very active person (I need to get tested regularly for a chronic condition).

I think I just got fixated with my weight from an early age, and now even I'm much smaller, my weight still hunts me.

What blood test can show that you are a "very active person" ? How?

My creatine kinase levels were too high at one stage. It means muscle damage. It can indicate heart problems, but for me it indicated I was doing too much intense exercise. I was advised to stop exercise for a week and then test again. Just to rule out heart problems.
This is probably not what the OP means though, as I wasn't exercising in a healthy way.

It's a liver function one, I can check if you want me to. My range was common for people who indulge in endurance sports. (Which I do).

Don't weigh yourself.

Changeusernameseeusernamehistory · 08/02/2024 09:16

Heavy bones?? Bone density is a good thing!

It used to be hard to find an 8, but with supersizing there are 6s and 8s everywhere. M&S 6 is actually an old 10 imo.

‘M&S 6 is actually an old 10 imo.’

I agree. The lack of standardised sizing is so irritating. And vanity sizing even applies to shoes. The same shoes I used to buy from LK Bennett, I have to now buy a size 3 instead of a size 4. My old size 4 of the same model still fits. Very annoying.

Don't know where the 'quote' function has gone.

Do you mean ALT/AST?

I have got friends who adopt this pose in every photo. It looks so contrived and ridiculous!

Sartre · 08/02/2024 09:25

I put your height and weight into a BMI calculator and it’s 27 so overweight. I thought it was a bit off because I’m 5 inches taller than you, the same weight and a size 10… Everyone has a different body shape, sure but you’re not a healthy weight BMI wise so unsure how you’re a size 8.

Changeusernameseeusernamehistory · 08/02/2024 09:31

OP, do you get fixated about things that are not related to weight, exercise, clothing size, appearance, etc?
and do you have any behaviours that you feel help you deal with uncomfortable feelings that may come up when thinking about the fixation topic?

Yes, that's the one!

To whoever asked if I obsess over other things, yes I do. Mostly about patterns. As a dear friend once told me, my brain just never stops.

Why do you even weigh yourself? It's just a number.

I only weigh myself very occasionally just out of interest, but day to day go by how I feel/look/how clothes fit.

OP has explained she does a lot of exercise - therefore her body will be very toned so she wears a small size in clothing . From reading others' comments within the thread it seems that OP is quite concerned about her weight / size so it's not helpful to say that she is an unhealthy weight when the issue is more around BMI is quite fallible in some cases .
