To wear trainers on a night out?

It appears this is very much a divisive subject.

I've noticed people over 30/35 often tend to think this is outrageous, under 30 seem to think the opposite.

I honestly am fed up with the pressure of heels, but also feel a bit alien when going out with older people.

I feel like it's quite a girl power movement and it's makes me feel good for sticking two fingers up to the expectations of wearing heels even if it is in a club and think there is an air of confidence in wearing trainers and not caring.

What are your thoughts?

I've never worn heels in my life and I think it's so odd to hobble yourself! But otoh I never wear trainers either. There are flat shoes too if you want something smarter than trainers - but I think you're right: it's only oldsters like me who don't see trainers as just normal footwear. Go for it!

Doglegs · 06/02/2024 22:34

I always wear trainers. Occasionally DMs. Never ever ever heels. Or other shoes really. Ever. If trainers aren't acceptable I won't be going - won't be my kind of place or people there.

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:34

@Doglegs 😂 may I ask your age if you don't mind me asking? Feel free to ignore if you'd rather not say

It's fine. I'm 49.

Habbyhadno · 06/02/2024 22:36

I'm 42, I've worn trainers out for about 10 years.

lilyfire · 06/02/2024 22:36

Is it an age thing? I’ve never worn heels - trainers, Chelsea boots, DMs or flat sandals and am mid 50’s.

SamW98 · 06/02/2024 22:36

I’m in my 50’s and I don’t own shoes. I live and die in Adidas Gazelle’s and Vans. I’ve got about 50 pairs.

Many people my age wear trainers on nights out, especially when we’re out dancing as our poor old aging feet couldn’t deal with 4/5/6 hours or more dancing in shoes.

I used to wear ridiculous heels 4/5 inches every day. Now think they look really dated plus after not even trying to wear shoes since the first lockdown, I’d be in agony

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 06/02/2024 22:36

Used to wear (high) heels all the time. Now i only really wear trainers or DMs and i love it!

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:36

😂 it just just be the circles I'm in then! Judging by these responses

I'm 45. I wear trainers / flat boots / brogues / flats of any description. Personally think heels look really outdated now although no doubt in a few years the 'stripper shoes' of my younger years will make a comeback.

At school prom most of the girls wore amazing dresses with trainers of some distcription and the boys were in suits with high tops

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:37

Sorry to sound daft but are DMs doc martins?!

How do you dress your trainers up?

I’m 45, I’ve got silver trainers for nights out, white ones in summer, can’t think of anything worse than buggering about with heels on a night out, post Covid I’ve completely given up on heels.

TulipTuesday · 06/02/2024 22:38

I’m 43 and regularly wear trainers on my occasional nights out.

I do wear heels sometimes but if we’re going bar to bar and I’ll be walking then I’m wearing my converse.

Doingmybest12 · 06/02/2024 22:38

I would think this has been the style for so long now that it's almost on the way out. I like the trainer and going out combo , but I'm almost 60 which makes me think for younger ones the tide will turn soon. But hopefully not back to sky high heels .

Yes they are. Trainers are pretty in right now and go with lots. I'd wear certain trainers with certain outfits.

Sofafor2for1 · 06/02/2024 22:39

Trainers all the way for me on a night out, never worn heels ever and I'm 51

soupmaker · 06/02/2024 22:40

I'm in my early 50s. I wear trainers on nights out. I have metallic bronze NB and white Nike. I've had various gold and rose gold trainers too.

BeaRF75 · 06/02/2024 22:40

I'm nearly 60 and it's nearly always Converse or flat boots for me. I was under the impression that heels are incredibly dated - we've moved on from the 1980s, after all.

mynameiscalypso · 06/02/2024 22:40

Is this one of those regional things? I'm in my 40s and would always wear trainers in a night out. I've seen women wear trainers at black tie events recently.

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:40

@soupmaker what would you style with white Nikes for example?

OP posts:
saladcruncher · 06/02/2024 22:41

Over 35 here. I'm a no to both trainers and heels. There's a lot of comfortable but stylish choices between those two extremes

converseandjeans · 06/02/2024 22:41

Early 50s and have never worn heels. Trainers or boots in winter & trainers or sandals in summer. Always flat. Sometimes wear DMs.

For going out you can get snazzy trainers. John Lewis do nice ones.

TigerDroveAgain · 06/02/2024 22:41

I'm 62: I wear trainers, white pumps or flat lace up boots. and that's it. I have a pair of flat court shoes if I have to be smart.

I have a traditional professional job and my shoe policy hasn't beea problem!

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:41

@mynameiscalypso it could be. I also think the circles you are in makes a difference too

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:41

@converseandjeans I won't be buying anything new!
