To wear trainers on a night out?

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:31

It appears this is very much a divisive subject.

I've noticed people over 30/35 often tend to think this is outrageous, under 30 seem to think the opposite.

I honestly am fed up with the pressure of heels, but also feel a bit alien when going out with older people.

I feel like it's quite a girl power movement and it's makes me feel good for sticking two fingers up to the expectations of wearing heels even if it is in a club and think there is an air of confidence in wearing trainers and not caring.

What are your thoughts?

55 and wear trainers out but I’d say it definitely depends on the trainers, I have gorgeous nude leather ones with rose gold trims, and several other pairs that are for going out, boots in winter, literally don’t own a pair of heels, have some wedges for the summer

Holidayhell22 · 06/02/2024 22:42

I’ve been wearing trainers for a long time now.
I only wear heels if I’m driving.
I used to wear heels in my younger days. I’m 50.

shreknjumps · 06/02/2024 22:42

Who the fuck is going out in heels these days? 🤣

converseandjeans · 06/02/2024 22:43

@pregahes

But you could get some silver or rose gold & feel more dressed up!

TheChosenTwo · 06/02/2024 22:44

I’m 38, mostly wear trainers. Do wear heels sometimes but 80% of the time I’m in trainers or at the very least some kind of flats - I wear heels when I’m going out, taxi to the door and just staying in one place. If there’s even a chance I might be walking from one place to the next - on with the trainers.

Theatrefan12 · 06/02/2024 22:45

I am mid 40s and never worn heels. 90% of the time I am in trainers, rest of the time I’m in boots or flat shoes. This has been the way for years so not a getting old thing

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:45

@shreknjumps 😂

@converseandjeans I don't want to waste the money! I'm also not sure about silver or gold

I’m wearing heels for a wedding this month and it’s the first time for years. I wear nothing but trainers, flat boots or sandals. I’m 70.

febbabies2023 · 06/02/2024 22:48

No one wears heels anymore! Very rarely would I wear them going out - only if I was going full glam - dress, heels, nails done party vibes 😂
Trainers are absolutely okay to go out out in now!
For reference, 29 nearly 30
When I was 18 heels were life.
I can confirm at nearly 30, they are not

Cazpar · 06/02/2024 22:49

Don't lots of clubs and bars have a 'no trainers' rule?

I like my trainers but they're not shoes for going out in for me.

MarceyMc · 06/02/2024 22:49

Early 30's and always trainers now - when I was in my early 20's you wouldn't have been seen dead in a pair of trainers on a night out but I really don't think it's the 'in' thing to wear heels anymore. Saying that I can't remember the last time I went to a nightclub 😂 but pubs/bars always trainers. Heels for special occasions such as weddings, fancy parties, etc.

TooMinty · 06/02/2024 22:50

I'm 45. I wear heels to black tie events only - all other occasions it's DMs or trainers or flat calf length boots (e.g. Fly London).

Greensleevevssnotnose · 06/02/2024 22:50

55 don't even own any heels. Trainers as in stan smiths or similar, not something you wear to the gym, with wide leg trousers skinny jeans etc, Mary Jane's or ballet pumps with dresses.

5128gap · 06/02/2024 22:50

Where I live, trainers/converse/chunky boots are worn by the under 30s and late 40's and over. The middle section tend to still wear heels. I'm delighted to be in the comfy footwear age group, albeit at the wrong end.

Deadringer · 06/02/2024 22:50

I have 3 dds all in their 20s and they never wear heels, just trainers or boots. The youngest is tiny ( under 5 foot) and she might wear trainers with a bit of wedge type height on them, but never high heels. I wore heels when I was young and my knees are fucked so I glad they seem to be going out of fashion.

Only for the under 25s

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 06/02/2024 22:52

I’m 44 and wear leather converse for my nights out. I really don’t care what others think but I think they suit me / my clothes.

StarDolphins · 06/02/2024 22:53

I f do not wear trainers but I only ever go out in DM’s or Converse. Wore heel in my 20’s but just looked like a kid in dress-up!

I relate to every inch of this!

Catshaveiteasy · 06/02/2024 22:56

I'm early 60s. Decades back wore court shoes occasionally, only real high heels for weddings or such like, if then. But mostly flats - usually ankle boots. Now boots or trainers, but going out for me is to eat or watch a show. Only dance once a year at work dos. I have low heel ankle boots for special occasions. Only recently embraced wearing trainers with skirts or dresses though. I'm more of a trousers person anyway.

soupmaker · 06/02/2024 22:56

pregahes · 06/02/2024 22:40

@soupmaker what would you style with white Nikes for example?

I have a couple of fabulous satin tunic dresses, one in black, one in fushia pink, that I wear with my white leather Nikes. The dresses are almost ankle length.

If it's black tie I have worn them with a black DJ and cigarette pants that I wear with a silk vest or white blouse.

For more casual nights out, straight dark denim with a big turn up and funky too and velvet blazer.

Bearpawk · 06/02/2024 22:57

Where do you live?
I'm 40 and always wear trainers out in my city. It's not uncommon.
A wedding or such id wear sandals though (maybe birks)

Notthatcatagain · 06/02/2024 22:59

Another 70 year old who lives in flat boots in winter and trainers in summer. I have grubby ones for dog walking and flashier ones for posh
