To wear trainers on a night out?

It appears this is very much a divisive subject.

I've noticed people over 30/35 often tend to think this is outrageous, under 30 seem to think the opposite.

I honestly am fed up with the pressure of heels, but also feel a bit alien when going out with older people.

I feel like it's quite a girl power movement and it's makes me feel good for sticking two fingers up to the expectations of wearing heels even if it is in a club and think there is an air of confidence in wearing trainers and not caring.

What are your thoughts?

I am in my 50s and have bought so many beautiful heels over the years. They have started to feel outdated post-pandemic. Thus I now have a lovely collection of brogues, flats and nice trainers. I have various gold and silver trainers for nights out and love them.

I own one pair of heels that I wear for weddings. If I absolutely must.

I have several pairs of DMs and some converse. That's all I wear for all occasions.

I'm 49.

Wear what you want.

Absolutely 100% fine to wear trainers on a night out. Especially if there’s walking and/ or dancing. FYI I’m 56 and do his often.

Yes. I’m in the 30-35 catergory, but will wear trainers for night out, especially if dancing is involved 😁

@Bouledeneige I think you are me. Right down to the not convinced about tights and trainers Thing. I too revert to ankle boots.

I’ve been toying with the idea of footless tights. I’m worried that’ll look like the dreaded leggings and a dress though. What’s your take?

I'm mid/late 40s and have been wearing trainers on nights out for 20 years! Not worn heels since I was about 19!

I'm 50 and often wear my trainers on a night out

LunaNorth · 08/02/2024 07:48

I have special Golden Goose ‘going out-out’ trainers 😃

I do! 68 😆 I have a glorious collection of leather flatform trainers - they give you the added length a heel would.

I’m 38, and wear heels if I go out out. But… it seems to be an age thing round my way, can spot the women my sort of age as we’re all hobbling around in heels risking sprained ankles or worse, whilst younger women are having a cracking time wearing trainers. If I’m just going for a night out to the pub I’ll wear flats, but clubbing has me reaching for stilettos!

I'm 40. Went out Saturday night and wore my all black leather converse

DP and I were out in town the other weekend, and I commented then how much things have changed. There used to be dress codes at the bars and clubs in town, but now anything goes. I like it that way, it’s more chilled.

Back when I was a teenager I spent a lot of time in gay bars as one of my social groups was largely gay, and there was never any dress code in those bars. I’d just be out in jeans and a top with trainers a lot of the time and preferred it that way. It changes the atmosphere and makes it more relaxed I feel.

I wear trainers about 80% of the time. However sometimes I wear flat Chelsea boots for work and low western boots with jeans for a smarter look. I don’t wear high heels at all anymore but do have a couple of pairs of low block heel sandals for really smart occasions where trainers won’t cut it.

I'm 52 and have worn trainers/pumps for nights out for years. The main event for me for any 'do' is the walking there and back!
Also I've had joint surgery on my big toe and it now can't bend. Some of us older ladies couldn't wear high heels, even if we wanted to.
A big shout out for Joya shoes. Great for bad backs and a bigger toe box than some trainers for any toe issues.

Depends on where you are going...some places have a no trainers and no football tops policy , other than that trainers are fine! I have fold up ballet flats for those situations as a handbag standby where heels are expected ....to change into when the heels start to hurt! The young ones all wore stripper type heels for the high school prom photos then changed into trainers for the dance ...even the boys wore trainers with their suits other than the kilted few!
