To wear trainers on a night out?

It appears this is very much a divisive subject.

I've noticed people over 30/35 often tend to think this is outrageous, under 30 seem to think the opposite.

I honestly am fed up with the pressure of heels, but also feel a bit alien when going out with older people.

I feel like it's quite a girl power movement and it's makes me feel good for sticking two fingers up to the expectations of wearing heels even if it is in a club and think there is an air of confidence in wearing trainers and not caring.

What are your thoughts?

42 and always wear trainers out

SwordToFlamethrower · 07/02/2024 13:41

I always wore/ wear trainers to go clubbing. Wearing heels is insanity. How are you supposed to dance???

I'm 46.

KreedKafer · 07/02/2024 13:47

I'm in my late 40s and trainers are fine for a night out. I mean, obviously it depends a bit on the style of trainer (I wouldn't go out in the same style of trainers I go running in, for example) but generally trainers are all good. I go out in my Docs too.

I think the idea that you have to wear heels if you're going out is quite dated and a bit naff - it's something I very much associate with a Real Housewives Of Cheshire/TOWIE/Love Island kind of look, rather than a cool/fashionable/stylish one.

fedupwithbeinghot · 07/02/2024 13:57

Mid 50s. Heels look very old fashioned nowadays unless you are attending a posh event. Where I live, nobody wears heels to a club anymore. South East of England

notapizzaeater · 07/02/2024 13:58

In winter I wear sparkly DM's. As the weather changes I've black trainers with black diamantés on. Took me ages to track them down after I'd seen a woman wearing them on a dance floor and decided I needed them !

Georgeandzippyzoo · 07/02/2024 14:18

I'm 52female. I've never worn heels on a night out ever ( wore wedge slightly heeled sandals when I got married). Occasionally flat boots ie timberland style, but more often than not trainers, vans style etc (although not usually branded).

easylikeasundaymorn · 07/02/2024 14:34

Im 35
Completely normal but does tend to depend on the outfit it's going with - the complete mish mash of a tight, fancy body con dress and multi-colour trainers is IMHO a "young look" and anyone under 30 odd struggles to pull it off

However plainish black/white or 1 colour trainers with a 'standard' dress is neutral and fine for everyone.

I don't subscribe to "mutton dressed as lamb" etc but do think once you're a bit older it's more about giving a nudge to show you're aware of trends rather than dressing exactly the same way as an 18 year old.

I agree high stiletto type heels look generally a bit dated although I still see people wearing them - I wear DM boots with a dress in the winter or those DM/clompy platform style sandals in the summer if I want to look slightly smarter (also I'm short so appreciate some height along with my comfort)

purplehair1 · 07/02/2024 15:08

Blimey I haven’t worn heels in 20 years! Does anyone still? Like a torture device similar to underwired bras.

QueenAstrid · 07/02/2024 15:10

I’m 47 and wear trainers or Docs on a night out. I’m another one that thinks heels are dated, not to mention the comfort factor.

zeibesaffron · 07/02/2024 15:16

Dresses/ skirts and white converse 😀 I am 50! Have not worn heels for years really - also wear flat boots too!

ShortRun · 07/02/2024 15:29

I'm 42 and wore heels all day everyday till the age of 30... After first. Hold but wore heels to work till I gave birth. Went back to wearing heels 50% of the time and Def to occasions/nights out.Fast forward to 37 second pregnancy exhausted me and I gave up on the heels life , even on nights out and I see most of the "youngsters" in nice dresses and flats on these rare nights out of mine. Xx

Yesyouarebeingatwat · 07/02/2024 15:30

I'm 44 and whilst I worked behind a bar in heels from 18 that was mainly so I could see over the pumps 😂
I've been wearing trainers out since I was 22 😂, pubs clubs and parties!

A1ia · 07/02/2024 15:37

Some places don't allow you in when wearing trainers. However, I haven't worn heels (with only one or two exceptions) for over a decade. Comfy shoes all the way!

Strugglingtodomybest · 07/02/2024 15:40

I'm 50+ and have never worn heels as they're too uncomfortable. I wear trainers everywhere in winter, and in summer I wear flip-flops or trainers.

Stormyweathr · 07/02/2024 15:57

I am with you on this

I am 43 and love this trend. I have a group of friends slightly older than me (50’s) that don’t agree however I live in a city and they are more town people, they also still see night out as starting at 10pm and finishing at 3am were as I am more of a daytime drinks nice meal few cocktails then last train home and in bed for 10pm

i am not down with the kids in terms of what brand trainers to buy I just like to make sure my trainers are clean (I mean clean clean as in white trainers scrubbed with bleach before I go anywhere) and I will wear them with most things jeans, dresses etc

Lotus3 · 07/02/2024 15:57

Dolly shoes/ballet pumps for me. Sack off the trouble of heels when I CBA, but don't breach the dress code of anywhere I may want to enter either.

Casperroonie · 07/02/2024 15:57

Look at the deformed feet of some 30+ women. That will make up your mind!!! (I'm 46, stick to trainers girls!!!!)

Stormbornform · 07/02/2024 16:01

I am well over 35 and trainers are my go to in summer, boots in winter

Ginandjuice57884 · 07/02/2024 16:04

Late 30s here and never worn heels on a night out. I enjoy comfort and my bones not being broken! Never judged anyone for their choice in footwear. Often look at people walking about in high heels in amazement because they are Not For Me.

Branwells77 · 07/02/2024 16:09

I’m over 35 and have noticed so many wearing trainers
in the winter I have a pair of low heal boot not stiletto very comfortable in the summer I will now be wearing my adidas canvas I don’t keep up with fashion I never have I wear what I’m comfortable in which isn’t much these days as I’m getting older I find I don’t care as much.
my friend loves her DMs has many colours, patterns and styles but she loves these too and says they are more comfortable and she’s early 50s https://www.heavenlyfeet.co.uk/

I have one pair of ugly shoes that fit me due to foot problems. I have to wear them whether at a wedding, funeral or a trip to the local farm. They mean I can leave the house and participate in life in general.

From my perspective I dont give a fuck what people wear on their feet.

Does that help?

WhatNoUsername · 07/02/2024 16:53

I'm 50. Totally normal to wear trainers to go out. In fact when I used to go clubbing the best clubs were the ones where you could wear trainers. We wouldn't go to clubs that insisted on shoes. Those were the "meat market" clubs. We went out to dance!

Lj8893 · 07/02/2024 17:14

35 here.
Will often wear trainers or flat boots (DMs) on a night out. Very occasionally I will wear chunky heeled boots, but that’s as glam as my footwear gets.
I own one pair of heeled sandals for special occasions (weddings etc), and I have owned them for about 15 years!

Wexone · 07/02/2024 17:15

i love love shoes - have a huge collection ranging from high heels to flats to trainers- nothing wrong with wearing trainers on a night out i think as long as the outfit and occasion. However for certain occasions there is a huge selection of flats that can make an outfit fabulous.
I disagree with the rule that runners go with everything they dont - a flat loafer can make an outfit look smarter and elegant even more
But you can wear what ever you want no one stopping you

Housebuyer37 · 07/02/2024 17:17

37 and wear trainers out, love it in summer with a dress.
