To wear trainers on a night out?

It appears this is very much a divisive subject.

I've noticed people over 30/35 often tend to think this is outrageous, under 30 seem to think the opposite.

I honestly am fed up with the pressure of heels, but also feel a bit alien when going out with older people.

I feel like it's quite a girl power movement and it's makes me feel good for sticking two fingers up to the expectations of wearing heels even if it is in a club and think there is an air of confidence in wearing trainers and not caring.

What are your thoughts?

I'm 53, have never worn heels but wore platforms very occasionally in the 90s. When worn with a dress I looked like a builder in drag. I never go anywhere that would require heels.

LondonQueen · 06/02/2024 23:05

Late 20's here, I wouldn't wear heels for a night out unless it was a formal event!

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 06/02/2024 23:14

I like my feet more than I care what people think about my foot attire, so no high heels for me.

Bridgetoo · 06/02/2024 23:18

Can confirm from recently going clubbing in central London that trainers are the only acceptable footwear. You'd stick out like a sore thumb in anything else tbh

tothesea · 06/02/2024 23:21

I think a lot of it does depend on your era and your friendship circle. I was a 90’s clubber ..we all wore trainers and still do in our 50’s.

I rarely see people wearing heels unless it’s a party or a wedding. Nights out to the pub or dinner is usually trainers/converse for me.

all the young ones wear trainers. Dd had a works night out last week, she had a splitter skirt, too and converse. Her friends had short dresses and Nike trainers,

converseandjeans · 06/02/2024 23:25

@pregahes

But do you actually own a pair? It seems like everyone else is sacking off heels in favour of trainers.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/02/2024 23:25

I only wear heels if I'm going to a classy event or to dinner for an occasion.

For going out dancing and letting my hair down? My converse all the way. Recently I've teamed my trainers with my sports bra for added support when I do the running man. Not even joking!!

I'm 44 and when I go out dancing, i go in the most comfortable outfit I can so I can let loose, otherwise what's the point?!

Everyone I've encountered under 35 is wearing no trainers as well.

Minglemangle007 · 06/02/2024 23:27

I'm 59 and friends are older, pretty much all of us wear trainers albeit nice ones that haven't seen an allotment!
But still have that one friend who wears spiky heels on a night out, just because she likes them.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/02/2024 23:27

Sorry should read "are also wearing trainers". Nobody wears heels where I am.

ThePoshUns · 06/02/2024 23:28

Im 52 md wear trainers on a night out and to work. I don't own any heels.

ThePoshUns · 06/02/2024 23:29

I also wear crocs ( shameless )

LoreleiG · 06/02/2024 23:32

Jeans trainers and a nice top is the perfect going out outfit and always has been. YANBU!

RantyAnty · 06/02/2024 23:35

Exactly who thinks it's outrageous and why do you care what they think?

ThreeTreeHill · 06/02/2024 23:35

See lots of people wear heels where I am! I'm late 20s and lots of people my age do wear heels despite what MN always says.

Generally I would wear boots, I might wear heels if it was for a sitting down bar but not clubbing or for dinner. It depends on the event and the people. But apart from a wedding or black tie I can't think of any place where there wouldn't be multiple people in some form of trainer

Catza · 06/02/2024 23:48

Why is it presented as a binary choice? I have plenty of flat shoes and sandals I can wear on the night out. Some places have a dress code and won’t allow trainers…
I can wear trainers/converse to a night in a pub or movies. I won’t wear trainers to a theatre.

flipflopfly · 06/02/2024 23:53

But surely it depends on the rest of the outfit? 53 year and wear trainers or birkies most of the time but then my clothes also suit that type of look. I've a few things (dresses mainly) that would look ridiculous with those kinds of shoes irrespective of age. Frankly I rarely wear them but if I did I'd wear heels. I know trainers and a dress are ubiquitous but in my opinion some of them just don't work when combined 🤷‍♀️

WandaWonder · 06/02/2024 23:59

I think heels are ridiculous so don't wear them, I just wear what I want

iamveryearlytoday · 07/02/2024 00:03

I wouldn't wear trainers on a night out (I'm 36) but I wouldn't wear heels either as I like my feet. I'd go for a flatter, but more dressy shoe.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/02/2024 00:04

I’m 59 and live in trainers. Wear what’s comfortable.

Kinneddar · 07/02/2024 00:06

My university age niece is out clubbing most weekends. She owns one pair of heels, bought for a ball she was attending

Her & her pals go out dressed up, looking very glamorous & only ever wear trainers, converse or DMs

Delphiniumandlupins · 07/02/2024 00:49

I am so old that I remember when most clubs wouldn't let you in wearing trainers! So glad that is in the past. It rather seems many people gave up heels in lockdown and have refused to go back.

theduchessofspork · 07/02/2024 00:53

Umm, I am quite a way over 35 and think trainers are perfectly normal on a normal night out, a lot more typical than heels, which I never see anymore.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 07/02/2024 01:04

I am way more comfortable in here than flats of any kind. I think I own a a pair of trainers but honestly don’t know where they are. It’s probably been at least 15 years since I’ve worn them.

Give me a nice chunky 2 1/2 inch heel and I’m up for anything. Beyond that Birkenstocks or my DMs.

all that being said. Why do you care what others are wearing????

tiredinoratia · 07/02/2024 01:06

I always wore trainers or, in the old days, kicker boots out

Dresses and shell toes were de rigeuer well before Lilly Allen.
