To wear trainers on a night out?

It appears this is very much a divisive subject.

I've noticed people over 30/35 often tend to think this is outrageous, under 30 seem to think the opposite.

I honestly am fed up with the pressure of heels, but also feel a bit alien when going out with older people.

I feel like it's quite a girl power movement and it's makes me feel good for sticking two fingers up to the expectations of wearing heels even if it is in a club and think there is an air of confidence in wearing trainers and not caring.

What are your thoughts?

You're totally right I'm 35 and I would never wear trainers for a night out (unless its a festival) I tend to stick to boots with a small heel in winter and some nice sparkly flat sandals in the summer. Used to try and wear heels when I was younger and would end the night with my feet throbbing!

Saying this, I can't say I've been properly clubbing since before Covid so haven't had an issue lol

MamPadi · 07/02/2024 08:27

Wear what you want to honestly! I have suffered with pelvic joint /hip pain since having my kids so just can't wear high heels anymore even though I'd love to, but also at the age where I feel like I'll wear what I feel comfortable in and don't really care what others think!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 07/02/2024 08:29

Am in my 50’s and wear what the fuck I like

Wellhellooooodear · 07/02/2024 08:38

It's fine. The younger generation have got it right if you ask me, you don't see 24 year olds tottering round in heels on a night out these days and good for them. Having said that, I would never do on a night out in flats. I'm 45 and I'm a shortarse and need some height!

VeryStressedMum · 07/02/2024 08:40

I'm 49 and I wear heels! Not stilettos or but I love a nice shoe on a night out I've never worn trainers to go out but my children do as that's the done thing nowadays.
When I was young no one wore trainers to go out and I'm from London - ok I can't say no one but I don't remember any people in trainers certainly not in clubs not the boys/men either, we wouldn't have got in with trainers

It's down to personal choice I like shoes I buy too many off vinted and I like to dress up a bit but if you like to wear trainers then wear them. No one else cares what's on your feet

VeryStressedMum · 07/02/2024 08:41

I'm actually 48 not 49 Confused

rhiannon1967 · 07/02/2024 08:55

I'm 57. If I'm going out for dinner I might wear trainers - Adidas Sambas, or possibly loafers. I do have platform heeled Mary Janes if I'm really glamming up. But I wouldn't do spindly heeled shoes anymore. They may me feel so prim and prissy and dated.

TempleOfBloom · 07/02/2024 09:15

I never see anyone going ‘out out’ in heels in London.

It looks a bit naff these days.

Startingagainandagain · 07/02/2024 09:34

Wear whatever you want!

I have worn heels for years.

If I go out I want to be able to enjoy myself, not worry about not being able to walk and being in pain because I am wearing heels.

Trainers, boots, ballerina shoes: there are plenty of alternatives to heels.

I also find the women (of any age) who go on nights out wearing sky high heel they very obviously can't even walk on look a bit sad and naff: that fake tan, heavy make-up, short skirts and high heel sandals in the middle of winter look as far as I am concerned is not in the least flattering.

mitogoshi · 07/02/2024 10:16

Depends where I'm going! Typically I wear DM's in the cooler months and flat sandals or white trainers in the summer locally but I have Chelsea boots, heels etc where necessary.

Going out isn't a singular place - dress for the location

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 07/02/2024 10:18

I was recently waiting for a bus in the evening when there was an under 18s disco going on in the town centre. Every single one of the girls queuing to get in was wearing a very short skirt with trainers. I thought it was very refreshing and sensible. I don't really like wearing heels and have stopped even wearing them to posh nights out but I tend to go for a pair of flat, lace-up boots with a dress or skirt. But I would not rule out trainers if I thought other people there might be wearing them too. I'm 57.

mitogoshi · 07/02/2024 10:21

Around my way anything goes anyway, it's not uncommon to see wellies in the pub (fishing, farming etc area) but equally there are others dressed up big time - all our venues are refreshingly mixed age and everyone gets along, teens to 80+ all having a good time

midgetastic · 07/02/2024 10:25

Heels are only seen in female BBC presenters as far as i can tell

jeaux90 · 07/02/2024 10:32

I'm early 50s senior at work and wear trainers at work, going out etc. I mean kind of nice ones like Nero Giardini but the only time I ever wear heels is for weddings /occasions and even then they are Wedge sandals.

I think heels look OF and naff now.

Snugglemonkey · 07/02/2024 10:38

I am 42. I wearbheels on the odd occasion, but generally I wear trainers, or dms.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/02/2024 11:04

I wear boots as long as possible and then trainers after that - so boots October to April then trainers and sandals in high summer

I hate heels and it's just not done in London

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/02/2024 11:29

It's fine I'm 59, disabled and have always needed flats
Adidas superstars are perfect for me
For " smart" occasions I wear my black mono ones

LentilFaculties · 07/02/2024 12:39

I'm in my 40s and have been wearing trainers on nights out since my very misspent youth. I think it's a regional and subculture thing. It was normal in London in the 90s / 00s in the kind of clubs I went to. When I went to Uni in a smaller UK city I got a lot of stick from men for it, some of which verged on homophobic abuse.

Its funny, trainers are so much better for your feet, truly the "sensible" option. Yet when my teen accidentally went to school with only his PE trainers, the school could not tolerate the thought of him wearing them outside of PE and forced him to wear a random pair of black school shoes from lost property.

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/02/2024 12:46

I'm 45 and never wore heels on a night out.

When I was a teen it was all DMs and converse boots.

In my 20s it was flat boots, ballet flats, rocket dog pumps and converse pumps.

In my 30s and 40s it is Superga pumps, flat Mary Janes and Loake brogues.

I have always lived in Birkenstocks in the summer.

TedMullins · 07/02/2024 12:50

In my 30s here and almost exclusively wear trainers although I do like chunky ankle boots too. I would and have worn trainers on a night out, in fact some trainers are very trendy. I haven’t worn heels since my teens/early 20s and I don’t even know why I wore them then tbh as I never liked them!

Perihelion · 07/02/2024 13:01

Wore stilettos occasionally in the 80's as a teenager. Never again.
I don't own any shoes, just boots and trainers.

Btrsun10 · 07/02/2024 13:13

I'm 52 and only wear trainers.
I wear them to work (in an office setting), I wear them going out and wear them going to gym.
I have quite a few pairs.

Fionaville · 07/02/2024 13:16

Plain, bright white trainers look good with almost anything.

I'm 45, I haven't worn heels for years. Trainers all the way.

Abouttimemum · 07/02/2024 13:21

I never wear heels. I’ve never seen anyone look comfortable wearing heels. Don’t do it if you don’t want to.

Bluenotgreen · 07/02/2024 13:25

I’m 58 and always in trainers, boots or Birkenstocks, depending on the weather.

Heels are so old fashioned, I don’t see young women wearing them where I live.
