To wear trainers on a night out?

It appears this is very much a divisive subject.

I've noticed people over 30/35 often tend to think this is outrageous, under 30 seem to think the opposite.

I honestly am fed up with the pressure of heels, but also feel a bit alien when going out with older people.

I feel like it's quite a girl power movement and it's makes me feel good for sticking two fingers up to the expectations of wearing heels even if it is in a club and think there is an air of confidence in wearing trainers and not caring.

What are your thoughts?

I'm 50. Totally normal to wear trainers to go out. In fact when I used to go clubbing the best clubs were the ones where you could wear trainers. We wouldn't go to clubs that insisted on shoes. Those were the "meat market" clubs. We went out to dance!

Totally. 👍 be always been a bit of a raver/house girl and the best clubs that were about the music always allowed trainers - and still do.

It was more the high street Ritzy type place that had a dress code - so the sleazy blokes could harass you all night but at least they wore shoes 🤦‍♀️

MrsMiddleMother · 07/02/2024 17:39

Definitely wear the trainers! Me and my girlfriends had a rare night out in summer, aged 25-35 all In heels and were definitely the odd ones out. I'd wear flat's or trainers next time.

Jenjens92 · 07/02/2024 17:51

I’m 31 about to be 32 and the last few times I’ve been out I’ve worn trainers and had the best nights out , trainers with leggings and a fancy top or converse, boots tights and a dress etc didn’t know trainers were reserved for the under 30s lol I haven’t worn heels out since I was 22

boredybored · 07/02/2024 18:01

I always do , mostly black converse lift .

Can't be arsed with heels tbh

Unprecedentedusername · 07/02/2024 18:18

I agree with PP that it just seems to be BBC newsreaders and weather presenters who wear heels. It does look really dated.

I always wear trainers. Occasionally DMs. Never ever ever heels. Or other shoes really. Ever. If trainers aren't acceptable I won't be going - won't be my kind of place or people there.

100pc this and I’m 50

GlomOfNit · 07/02/2024 18:43

Sorry, coming over a bit faint at the idea of 'going out' (eg clubbing)! God, I always hated that. Thank feck I now live in the countryside and am 50 and don't have a social life beyond seeing folk groups in lovely local venues, the occasional trip to our local cinema, and the odd meal with friends. 😂

In the 90's, when I did very occasionally do what I believe might be known as clubbing (if going to the local 70's funk night in our university town was clubbing...) nobody gave a toss what we wore. It was the 90's so it was DMs. I lived in them, always with slightly grungy dresses. Now I live in DMs (or converse) and slightly less grungy dresses. I'm 50. I think I may still have the odd pair of low kitten heels at the back of a cupboard from weddings I went to. I used to wear (horrible) loafer-type slip-ons to present academic papers, but lectured in high boots or DMs. There has never been room in my life for stupid crippling heels.

What happened to the old feminist adage that you should never go out in footwear you couldn't kick a bloke in the balls with, and then leg it? Grin

DillDanding · 07/02/2024 18:45

In my circle, we all wear trainers/converse/chelsea boots and DMs. Heels would be somewhat ridiculous and so outdated.

Cazpar · 06/02/2024 22:49

Don't lots of clubs and bars have a 'no trainers' rule?

I like my trainers but they're not shoes for going out in for me.

Not since about 1986. And even back then it was only the townie clubs that no one who was actually into music or dancing would have been seen dead in.

LlynTegid · 07/02/2024 18:53

High heels must have been invented by men.

Be it traditional trainers, Converse, DMs or flat shoes, all are much better. If I ruled the country no company could ever insist on anyone wearing heels, except for a theatrical performance. I would also if a tv programme controller or director make it clear that no woman should feel pressured to wear heels.

BusyCaz · 07/02/2024 18:55

I haven't wore heels for years lol, I'm 50 and wear flats/trainers/boots as and when and where I like. You do you x

Schoolrefused · 07/02/2024 18:56

Always wear trainers so I can jog home. Saves hanging around and paying for for a taxi, much safer, get some exercise in.

TiredMummma · 07/02/2024 19:26

I tend to wear boots - flat or heeled - in winter

In summer, trainers or sandals depending on the venue (sticky floors vs cocktail bar).

Tend to only wear heels at very formal occasions like weddings.

Wore stilettos occasionally in the 80's as a teenager. Never again.
I don't own any shoes, just boots and trainers.

Are boots and trainers not shoes?

I'm confused

HauntedPencil · 07/02/2024 20:17

I've worn trainers out my whole life and I'm significantly older than 35 and as do a lot of people I know. Don't understand why you think it's under 30s.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/02/2024 20:20

lilyfire · 06/02/2024 22:36

Is it an age thing? I’ve never worn heels - trainers, Chelsea boots, DMs or flat sandals and am mid 50’s.

Snap - almost. I very rarely wear heels. I've got a lovely pair of heeled ankle boots though so do occasionally wear them but I mean maybe twice a year?

I've got some. pairs of very funky trainers that I wear if I'm out for the evening.

SisSuffragette · 07/02/2024 20:24

I wear trainers and I'm 37 ☺️ wear them with dresses, trousers, anything!

KK05 · 07/02/2024 22:08

I’m of the age that I wouldn’t have been seen dead without heels on a night out when I was younger. Doesn’t help that I’m just over 5ft and all my friends are 5’7 and taller.

Now thought I wear a mix of both. Still love my heels but I will also wear trainers. It depends on where I’m going and what my outfit is.

Bouledeneige · 07/02/2024 23:29

I wore heels a lot between about 35 and 50 for work and date nights. Nowadays, and since Covid, approaching 60 I mostly wear trainers with jeans/trousers or ankle boots when in a skirt or dress with tights. And no I don't mean old lady footglove trainers. I like the look of wide legged trousers or jeans with my Nike blazers. I'm just not convinced by trainers with tights so it's ankle boots with them - flat or heeled.

I am very casual at weekends so am never hyper glam. I'll probably get shot down but I think it's a (middle class?) London thing. We don't overdress up at weekends.

(I'm not speaking about the Mayfair/Kensington/Chelsea set that's a whole other world).

DD who's 23 only wears trainers.

Jzp · 07/02/2024 23:38

I’m 66. I haven’t worn heels since my early 20s and even then very rarely. I don’t see anything wrong with wearing trainers if that’s what you want. Realistically I only wear my Fly Boots, Chelsea boots, trainers or Birkenstocks. So I never wear ‘shoes’ as such although I do have a (flat) pair of Vivienne Westwoods I wear to weddings.

MountainBarbie · 08/02/2024 00:38

Saw a gorgeous, gorgeous young girl the other day in black trainers, black jeans, a black denim shirt all tucked in with a lovely belt, hair and makeup in the pub. She looked bloody gorj and comfortable, especially given how cold it is. Wear trainers!

IKnowWhatISee · 08/02/2024 01:49

We wore trainers back in the '90s. We were influenced by All Saints and Bjork.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/02/2024 07:31

Yep exactly. My teens and early twenties were spent jumping around to live bands or dancing til dawn sweaty house clubs. Both venues all the women wore trainers or DMs.

I did have a favourite pair of shoes I wore to more decorous places - from Office - they were flat, slightly pointed black leather flats with three cut out hot pink leather stars on the upper.

I loved those shoes.

QueenBean22 · 08/02/2024 07:33

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it but I think some places won’t allow entry if you wear trainers

bradpittsbathwater · 08/02/2024 07:34

Heels on a night out are like stepping back in a Time Machine pre 2013. Heels are overdressed and impractical in my opinion. Same with heels in the office. You can always tell how old someone is if they're wadding about in heels.
