How Often do you check your bank balance?

FunionsRFun · 03/02/2024 17:42

For me it's normally twice a day- my mum was shocked when I said that. She check once a week.
I have a friend who never checks. She works but her her husband is the breadwinner. She buys what she wants when wants including short trips ect.
I feel these are two extremes but what is normal?

Once or twice a week, just to check I haven't missed anything in the running total I keep in a book.

Caswallonthefox · 03/02/2024 23:35

As often as I need to.😆

UmbrellaBees · 03/02/2024 23:36

Never check - dh’s job to keep it topped up - we both work and our money is shared.

justasking111 · 03/02/2024 23:41

I get an alert every time. Even my 99p kindle books. My current account I keep low in case of fraud. So I transfer money as and when I need to for direct debits. I only use a credit card online apart from Amazon account.

I use my debit card for anything for myself, clothes, shoes, makeup and cash.

I use the credit card for fuel, food, website purchases.

So perhaps check my current account maybe once or twice a week.

Roadtripwithkids999 · 03/02/2024 23:45

a few times a day. My bank likes to take direct debits at all sorts of random timings of the day

Youcunnyfunt · 03/02/2024 23:48

A few times a week, but if I’m waiting for a refund or payment I might check a few times a day quickly. It’s so quick and easy on the phone. I only really check my main account that regularly and just for peace of mind. I’ve had fraudulent transactions before and also refunds that didn’t materialise, payments not come through, cheques bounce, etc, so I do keep an eye on everything and I do chase companies or people if I have to.
I move money around once a month so I generally save that for a day that I spend 30 minutes checking all accounts are in order, then move funds around as required.

AgentJohnson · 03/02/2024 23:53

I check about twice a week, more so at the end of each month when payments go out. When I’m on holiday I check more my credit card balance more often.

I have an app that alerts me when my salary is paid and when credit card is paid (my credit card balance is automatically debited from my current account at the end of each mont).

BarelyCoping123 · 03/02/2024 23:55

At least once a day. Current accounts and credit card

windysocks · 03/02/2024 23:56

Daily

unsync · 04/02/2024 00:03

I get alerts, but I still go in and then allocate and annotate transactions whilst I remember them. I also check my credit record regularly.

My ex-h was financially abusive and I used to see credit card / loan searches on my credit history that I hadn't instigated, even after we had separated. I knew it was him as my birth date was always a couple of days out.

Shallana · 04/02/2024 00:07

Daily. I use Monzo and all my money is sorted into pots, if I do any food shopping then I'll refund myself from the joint groceries pot or if I pick some paint up from B&Q then I'll take it out the House pot. I put £100 a month away in a Gift pot to cover birthdays and christmas, I withdraw from this for any presents.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/02/2024 00:16

Every two/three days. I do get alerts but they only tell me what a transaction in/out is, not the account balance.

ALotMore · 04/02/2024 00:32

The less well off I feel the more I check. I'm currently checking at least daily because I have a spreadsheet that I fill out to keep tabs on every single penny. I can't wait for the day when I don't have to do that anymore, if that day ever comes.

There was a time in my past that I was flush and would check periodically, just to enjoy feeling safe with seeing I had some savings. Now I have a permanently heavy feeling in my chest that I know is financial worry and never used to be there.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 04/02/2024 00:34

Varies a lot. Sometimes I'm on a couple times a day, sometimes it will be a week. Rarely more than a week.

Timeforanotheraliasnow · 04/02/2024 01:08

Every day.

JamSandle · 04/02/2024 01:10

Multiple times a day. Bit of an OCD lite thing.

FreyafromLondon · 04/02/2024 01:15

About 5 times a day. It's habit

blueshoes · 04/02/2024 01:24

I have multiple bank accounts and carry 4 phones. Not a drug dealer but manage the finances for my elderly parents, daughter and 2 households.

I check them whenever I need to make a payment which is about 4 x a week.

EBearhug · 04/02/2024 01:25

When I've made payments or something is coming in. So it varies. But I've been out of work for a while, so it will be more often as I've nor much left and so far, no job offers.

Asiatoyork · 04/02/2024 02:23

I check mine daily. That's because I transfer the pence in my balance to a saver every day

Ive heard CHiP is quite good for this, although never got round to using it myself.

I check a few times a week maybe - depends if I’m waiting for expenses to be paid, refunds etc.

Asiatoyork · 04/02/2024 02:24

Did anyone else check their accounts immediately after posting on this thread?!

Ponderingwindow · 04/02/2024 02:34

About twice a month when we pay bills. We don’t use debit cards so no money is taken out of our accounts bit by bit. Daily purchases all go on credit cards and then paid off in full each month.

Nat6999 · 04/02/2024 02:47

Every couple of days unless I'm expecting a payment like the Cost of Living £300 payments.

tuvamoodyson · 04/02/2024 06:04

Daily.

GnomeDePlume · 04/02/2024 06:31

Me - every day. I also keep spreadsheets for our finances. We are in the stage of being close to paying off our mortgage and less than 10 years to go to retirement.

DH - never. His attitude is that we dont need 2 people obsessing over our finances!

I'm an accountant so spreadsheets are in my soul.
