How Often do you check your bank balance?

FunionsRFun · 03/02/2024 17:42

For me it's normally twice a day- my mum was shocked when I said that. She check once a week.
I have a friend who never checks. She works but her her husband is the breadwinner. She buys what she wants when wants including short trips ect.
I feel these are two extremes but what is normal?

A couple of times a week, I get alerts for transactions on my iPad anyway

nadine90 · 03/02/2024 18:18

Multiple times a day. I’m not well off though, it’s always a stretch getting from one payday to the next. So I need to keep constant track

Bigdoglittlecat · 03/02/2024 18:20

Daily - I’m self employed and am paid by clients randomly at intervals throughout the week so I have to keep tabs on it to check that a) they have actually paid and b) how much is in there as it varies wildly.
it’s much easier when you’re paid once a month like in a normal job.

drowningintinsel · 03/02/2024 18:22

Everyday.

Fabricwitch · 03/02/2024 18:23

Most days, I put everything spent on a spreadsheet, and move money around if needed for payments the next day. The only time I'll check less is on holiday, I'll make sure I have more than enough on the card I want to use and only check if I'm worried things have gotten really out of hand! I'll add it all to the spreadsheet when I'm back home.

ThinWomansBrain · 03/02/2024 18:23

@tocontinue1 -double check I'd got the bank details correct in the sending (employer) account I suppose.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 03/02/2024 18:24

after each and every bank transaction, multiple times a day. first thing in the am and last thing at night on no spend days even.

Flatleak · 03/02/2024 18:25

Only on pay day when I move everything left to savings. But I do all my spending on my credit card (not that I check that either)

Wrapunzel · 03/02/2024 18:25

I have YNAB and it synchronises with my bank so not every day unless it doesn't match my cleared balance. YNAB on the other hand... more than I'd like to say. Everyone needs a hobby Grin

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 03/02/2024 18:25

I check mine probably in excess of 10 times a day, I accept that I'm anal about it but I had loads of money troubles for about 20 years and dug myself out, so I check it, plan ahead, move dates about in my budget planner etc

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 03/02/2024 18:25

Either when I’ve spent something or there’s a deposit to be made. But I’ve set it so every transaction I get a message.

YouAndMeAndThem · 03/02/2024 18:26

I check my joint/bills account once a week to check my bills have come out as planned and I have enough money left for the rest of the bills. My spending account usually just when I get a notification that I've run low 🤣

Sirzy · 03/02/2024 18:26

I check every morning as part of my start of day routine.

caringcarer · 03/02/2024 18:27

About once a week. I might look if I'm expecting a payment in if it's arrived or if I'm expecting a payment out if it's been paid.

ohtowinthelottery · 03/02/2024 18:28

I check transactions most days on the app so see the balance as well. I'm always on the lookout for dodgy transactions. I found one in December 2022 for £29.99 which I didn't recognise. Turned out someone had stolen DHs card details and set up a monthly subscription of £29.99. So glad I spotted it as the Bank managed to stop the transaction going through.

FindingMeno · 03/02/2024 18:28

Daily.
Don't know why really but I can't think its a bad habit.

AcridAndStanLee · 03/02/2024 18:29

I have a bill account and a spending account plus some other accounts I pop money in for various things.

To be honest, I check the bill account a few times a month to make sure no dodgy transactions but the spending account, I just tap it til it stops. I do have a the Emma app which pops up with a notification of the balance everyday but I rarely look at it.

Blake10 · 03/02/2024 18:30

Most days, especially when money is tight. Which it seems to be a lot recently!

Ilovemyshed · 03/02/2024 18:30

Couple of times a week and do a reconciliation once or twice a month.

Georgyporky · 03/02/2024 18:33

Don't need to.
Regular inpayments arrive on set days, so I then transfer to savings leaving a balance of <£1.
I'm notified of O/Ds , so log in & move funds from savings.

Paw2024 · 03/02/2024 18:33

Every day to tick off direct debits etc that have come out and to budget as I'm on a fairly tight budget (as in there isn't an extra £10 if I needed it)

AhBiscuits · 03/02/2024 18:35

Maybe a couple of times a week, if that.

chattyness · 03/02/2024 18:35

I check a couple of times a day, as a few years ago when we were with Abbey/Santander, my husbands bank account got hacked through paypal ,they were meant to alert him for usual spending but they did not.The payment linked to a really fake looking gaming website & we don't ever buy games, but the spend was low -ish £50 so that was probably why it didn't trigger ? They were so unhelpful and unapologetic, it was like "hard luck we've closed your account & you'll need to come in" husband had to go to the bank in person and present/prove id to get a new account set up, we live 150 mile round trip to the branch & it was in bad weather just before Christmas, but we had no choice. We changed banks pretty soon after that.

Createausername1970 · 03/02/2024 18:37

I check a few times at the start of the month to make sure my wages have gone in and all the DDs have cleared. Then for the rest of the month i will check every four or five days, but usually I have had to go into the app during that time to approve payments or make payments, so I always know what the balance should be, and i do have a quick look for anything unexpected.

DiscoBeat · 03/02/2024 18:37

Only when I need to make a large transfer from another account, eg to pay a decorator or large garage bill. I have a quick check over the account at the same time for any anomalies.
