How Often do you check your bank balance?

FunionsRFun · 03/02/2024 17:42

For me it's normally twice a day- my mum was shocked when I said that. She check once a week.
I have a friend who never checks. She works but her her husband is the breadwinner. She buys what she wants when wants including short trips ect.
I feel these are two extremes but what is normal?

Multiple times a day. I bank with Monzo for both my personal and business banking so flick between checking both at various points in the day.

edissa · 03/02/2024 17:58

Once a week ish

luckylavender · 03/02/2024 17:59

Daily

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/02/2024 18:00

Never.

ThinWomansBrain · 03/02/2024 18:00

rarely - I see the balance if I need to go into the app to authorise an online payment.
I did last week, first time in over a year as I've just started a new job & wanted to check my salary was there (despite having authorised the payment from employers' bank account).

Typical accountant.

To see how much in after DDs, annoyingly I have three dates a month they leave on. I also keep a weekly allowance in there so to see how much is left for the week. I do have a plum account for weekly allowance but somehow only remember to transfer the money for the first two weeks of the month

Couple of times a month maybe. To check balance and to remind myself of if I need to make payments or a transfer to somewhere.

Dogdilemma2000 · 03/02/2024 18:01

Several times a week. Don’t know why I bother because DH spends everything on credit card in his name and I’ve no flipping clue what he’s spent on what or how much damn money we don’t have.

Redglitter · 03/02/2024 18:02

I check daily. Very rarely its more than that

It varies. Sometimes more than once a day, sometimes every second or third day.

I have several accounts with two banks (both accessible via app) and I occasionally need to move money across accounts.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 03/02/2024 18:04

Every day. I use the YNAB app and if I don't reconcile payments and it doesn't match up it takes forever to pin down the error and get it to match.

AlltheFs · 03/02/2024 18:05

Most days, it takes a few seconds via the app. DH works in financial crime so I’m always on the check for suspicious activity.
I check all the cards and accounts quickly.

On pay day and around the day the DD’s go out I check for those specifically. We have no surplus in the bill account so if a payment is higher than expected it matters!

Daily…. Sometimes more often. Those of you who don’t check- how would you spot fraud?
often fraudulent use consists of one small transaction then further larger ones. It’s easier to deal with if you catch the one small one!

The bank spits the fraud for me. Like "there's an unusual transaction due to come out on 5th for DodgyFraud.com - would you like us to prevent the payment" or that kind of thing. Like once I went to Manchester, about 400 miles for a day, and it alerted me that my debit card was being used in an unusual city etc.

Gobolina · 03/02/2024 18:06

Daily. Every morning when I log on.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 03/02/2024 18:06

Multiple times a day, dunno what hy but pretty much every time I pick up my phone

Greentime101 · 03/02/2024 18:08

My mind is blown by people who don’t check! Even if I had an abundance of money I would keep the majority in a high interest account and not have much surplus in the day to day current account. Also it is important to check your transactions and be aware of anything fraudulent as others have said

lieselotte · 03/02/2024 18:08

I check every day.

PonyPatter44 · 03/02/2024 18:09

I probably check once or twice a week these days. I don't think I could be arsed to check every day!

When I was with my exH and our finances were in terrible trouble due to his drinking and spending addictions, and we permanently lived in the depths of our overdraft, I genuinely felt panicky at the idea of checking the accounts. It's crazy, really, because that was the time I needed to be most aware but I struggled to face it. These days DP and i are fairly comfortable, and checking the bank accounts is quite a normal thing to do.

afkonholidaynearleek · 03/02/2024 18:09

I check when I have payments due to come out. Otherwise it's few and far between.

Fionaville · 03/02/2024 18:11

Daily. I don't know what I'm actually looking for. Before banking apps, I'd go weeks without knowing what was happening in my account.
I often think 'What the hell is that?' over a transaction, then remember I went in a random shop the day before.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 03/02/2024 18:11

Frequently. It's an occupational hazard, I don't leave anything to chance and I like to have everything straight in my head. It's nothing to do with needing to watch the pennies or keep a tight control on spending, I just need to know and I enjoy it to be honest.

Growlybear83 · 03/02/2024 18:12

Usually once a month when I transfer my monthly salary from my business account. If I get an alert from the bank that I'm about to go into an overdraft I check then.

DanceForAMomentOrTwo · 03/02/2024 18:12

Once a month, it’s more just moving money around than checking the balance. I also have a quick look through to make sure everything looks ok most months.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/02/2024 18:15

My bank lets me know when money goes in or out so I only check the actual balance when I go onto my banking app for another reason, like making a payment. I usually know pretty much what's in there anyway, my spending is fairly consistent.
