How Often do you check your bank balance?

FunionsRFun · 03/02/2024 17:42

For me it's normally twice a day- my mum was shocked when I said that. She check once a week.
I have a friend who never checks. She works but her her husband is the breadwinner. She buys what she wants when wants including short trips ect.
I feel these are two extremes but what is normal?

I check at least once a month to ensure that expected payments in have been made and I reconcile all the outgoing payments to ensure nothing comes out which I don't recognise. Have (very, very rarely) had to query things, which were not mine and get that sorted out. I then use a spreadsheet to list what will be coming off the following month for checking in a month's time.

I also check on other occasions if I want to make extra sure that 'one-off' payments have been paid on time

My DH and I have 2 current accounts, but they are (now) both joint accounts. One was mine originally and one was his, so my income goes into one of the current accounts and his goes into the other one and both accounts have DD's coming off them - but I am the one who does all the reconciling etc

I'm gobsmacked at leaving it all to a DH! Seriously

I've been married decades and always had automony with finances whilst sharing too

I need that for when he's not around or vice versa

Same. I can't imagine not knowing what's going on with the family finances 😬

pinkyfinger · 03/02/2024 21:15

Probably at least every 2 days, more often if I need to log in to pay a bill. I have money coming in and out on different dates and don't get alerts so I like to make sure I'm up to speed with everything.

XenoBitch · 03/02/2024 21:16

I check about 2 weeks after I have a text saying I am overdrawn. My head is in the sand.

Dustpantsandbush · 03/02/2024 21:16

Multiple times a day. Hoping somehow some money has miraculously appeared from somewhere

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 03/02/2024 21:24

Yes for the same reason.

AnneElliott · 03/02/2024 21:24

I check daily to make sure the direct debits have gone out and how the balance is doing.

BMW6 · 03/02/2024 21:24

I have an excel spreadsheet with all monthly income and outgoings, and balance in bank. Once a week I call up the account online and update the spreadsheet so it matches to the penny.

Daily - I’m self employed and am paid by clients randomly at intervals throughout the week so I have to keep tabs on it to check that a) they have actually paid and b) how much is in there as it varies wildly.
it’s much easier when you’re paid once a month like in a normal job.

Yes I'm also self employed so I'm always checking who has paid and who I need to chase up!
Usually daily Monday-Friday. Don't usually bother at the weekend.

Direstraightsagain · 03/02/2024 21:34

I move money around a couple of times a month to get good savings rates, I get a text message when an account hits a certain level then move cash. When I do I scan transactions for the last few weeks. Also do the same if I’m transferring any money/making a payment.

Goldiex · 03/02/2024 21:58

I never used to check mine ever and then saw that someone had been buying train tickets in poland for 4 months costing over 2k 😂 twice a day now

tellstales · 03/02/2024 21:59

A few times a day probably. It's quicker than accessing mumsnet so I'm surprised at anyone here who doesn't have online banking. Plus, I like seeing all them zeros. Confused

scorpio5 · 03/02/2024 22:03

depends if I'd like to vomit or not I guess

lljkk · 03/02/2024 22:04

When there's a reason... like 2 nights ago I paid a friend for something. The week before that, my salary came in & I moved most of it to a savings account. Today I paid DS for something, etc.

Most payments go on the credit card & that I look at carefully when I get the (e)statement.

Upsadiddles · 03/02/2024 22:06

Most days. I budget to the penny from when DH and I were very skint, and I’ve continued to budget in the same way now we are more comfortable. I do it to keep me conscious of what I’m spending, and for motivation to keep saving. I’m regularly transferring money from and to various saving pots (e.g kids clothes, birthday gift etc). It’s become habit over the years and I think sometimes I’m not actually really checking. However there’s several occasions I have caught fraudulent transactions or subscriptions I’ve forgotten to cancel in time, and even if not frequent it’s justified the 20 seconds a day it takes to have a look. It’s also a bit of a comfort thing I think, having had to really stress about money in the past to now knowing that we can deal with most unexpected expenses and at least still be able to eat.

ClematisRock · 03/02/2024 22:07

About once a fortnight.

I know exactly what goes on and what goes out. It's been the same for a while but I make adjustments for energy bills which I know in advance due to emails.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/02/2024 22:11

Once or twice a month. It wouldn't occur to me to check it more often tbh.

CrunchyCarrot · 03/02/2024 22:12

Maybe once a month or longer. Pay everything by credit card which is fully paid off each month. I'm not sure what I would be looking for by checking my account daily!

LaPalmaLlama · 03/02/2024 22:13

Not often but I do check all the notifications so I’d notice if there was anything fraudulent

Holybatrimony · 03/02/2024 22:27

@Roussette I understand why you'd think it wasn't a good idea to leave it to DH. However, I have all log ins. In the past paid bills etc so it's not as if I don't know how to. We have mirror ISAs, share portfolios and investments and I see all our tax returns etc. so I'm not financially illiterate

Mytopia · 03/02/2024 22:32

Every day, I'm the only earner in my house so like to keep on top of finances.

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/02/2024 22:43

Everytime I use my card.

I had my card cloned 2 years ago, as I get app notifications I stopped the card straight away but now I keep my card locked. I unlock it as I am approaching the till to pay and then locking it again afterwards.

It took so long to get my money back from the bank and sort it all out that I make sure that the only person who can use my card is me.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/02/2024 22:43

Every day I'm on disability benefits and watch every penny

RobertaFirmino · 03/02/2024 22:52

I check mine daily. That's because I transfer the pence in my balance to a saver every day.

ToxicOstrich · 03/02/2024 22:57

Daily. I transfer tiny amounts every day (£2-15) into a holiday pot depending on how much I've spent. Got me to Spain in 18 months of saving last time!
