How Often do you check your bank balance?

FunionsRFun · 03/02/2024 17:42

For me it's normally twice a day- my mum was shocked when I said that. She check once a week.
I have a friend who never checks. She works but her her husband is the breadwinner. She buys what she wants when wants including short trips ect.
I feel these are two extremes but what is normal?

monthly perhaps, maybe twice a month at a push.

I will pay much more attention to it when I retire though as my disposable income will be much less.

Lovemusic82 · 03/02/2024 19:10

Today I’ve checked it 4 times, waiting for money to clear from vinted and checking I have enough money to cover this weeks bills…..and checking to see if someone has accidentally paid £1,0000000 into my account (sadly it hasn’t happened yet).

sometimes I check it several times a day and other times just a couple times a week.

RootVegAndMash · 03/02/2024 19:10

Daily because I pay my mortgage every day

Why do you pay your mortgage every day?

Blackalice · 03/02/2024 19:10

Every morning.

Senseofsomething · 03/02/2024 19:11

Most days. I like to check details of what is going in/out.

bireok · 03/02/2024 19:11

I check every few days. I have payments coming from different sources (not just one salary) so likely to be something coming in at least once a week. Not because I'm concerned about fraud - never been an issue.

UnderstatedElegance · 03/02/2024 19:12

A couple of times a month.

ssd · 03/02/2024 19:12

All the time

Restinpeacefavouritecoathanger · 03/02/2024 19:12

Daily probably twice.

I was victim of credit card fraud not long ago and I was covered but it's still a ballsache so it's become a bit of an habit I'm not looking in any detail though balances etc just checking everything is as should be.

Could probably tell you my current account to the nearest £10

Pleasegodgotosleep · 03/02/2024 19:14

Every day. I started working for a bank when I was 17. I'm very aware of fraud and the process of a couple of small transactions slipping through until they get bigger and bigger

Frazzled2108 · 03/02/2024 19:15

Maybe once every two or three weeks. I know roughly what's in there.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 03/02/2024 19:15

Daily! Like to keep a close eye on things and then anything untoward is picked up quickly and there are never any surprises!

Grilledsquid · 03/02/2024 19:16

Like twice a month? Usually when I am moving money to saving and then second time when paying CC. More if I have to transfer or pay someone. But it's not so much checking as just seeing it there. So does that count as 0?
I get notifications for transactions, my debit card is never used anyway.
There is always enough for bills/spending and bit extra in case of emergency, but never large sums.
And no. I am not gigh earner. Just low spender

space99 · 03/02/2024 19:17

I have a weird obsession and check at least 4 times a day. No idea why!

wubwubwub · 03/02/2024 19:18

How many times do you daily checkers find problems??

Why do you pay your mortgage every day?

Just an easy way to overpay without any effort. I make sure the day ends with my balance rounded down to the nearest £10. So I pay anything from £9.99 to 1p.
Plus it means my bank account stays neat, I am autistic and random numbers bother me.

I've often had issues with subscriptions not being cancelled - and if you don't contact the company within a certain amount of time, you're not eligible for a refund.

I've had issues with Prime, NowTV and Discovery+ in the past. I got my money back each time because I noticed within 24h and contacted the company to complain.

Daily because I pay my mortgage every day.

Interested @DragonFly98 How does this work?

Faceplantagain · 03/02/2024 19:31

Most days. As well as keeping an eye on expenditure I'm self-employed, so I want to know when income is coming in.

Noeffinway · 03/02/2024 19:31

Maybe twice a month. I do banking on payday and make sure enough is put in the budget account for all bills, then enough in the household account, some put aside for Christmas and Birthdays, some to the kids accounts, some into pension pot, rest into savings. Then I usually check again about a week before payday to see if the household expenses is holding up or needs a top up.

NannyGythaOgg · 03/02/2024 19:38

Most days at least once. I also check my CC balances at least once a week if I haven't used them and more frequently if I have.
I have a spread sheet detailing a running balance in my current account, which includes the dates that CC full balance DD debit come out and I have a budget for each CC (different ones for different spending).

Since I have done this I not only feel happier about being in control of my finances (which are pretty tight) and have spent less overall on my CCs. (All incidental spending goes on CC)

daffodilandtulip · 03/02/2024 19:38

Daily. Self employed with people paying at different intervals. Sometimes several times a day if they're insisting they've paid but it's not there 🙄. Then shifting money into different pots for various things.

Seagrassbasket · 03/02/2024 19:41

At least daily on monzo which is my everyday spending account. Joint account and current account a couple of times a week.

I was told once that checking daily is a good money management habit, and I would say it’s definitely helped me.

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 03/02/2024 19:43

CaineRaine · 03/02/2024 17:48

Same here, I pay everything on a credit card and pay it off as I go along but annoyingly have to wait for the transactions to move out of pending status. So check every couple of days and pay it off when I’m allowed to.

Same here. Then I check my bank balance after the payment has gone out.
