How Often do you check your bank balance?

FunionsRFun · 03/02/2024 17:42

For me it's normally twice a day- my mum was shocked when I said that. She check once a week.
I have a friend who never checks. She works but her her husband is the breadwinner. She buys what she wants when wants including short trips ect.
I feel these are two extremes but what is normal?

Now I have an app, most days. When I had to log in online, much less often.

morellamalessdrama · 03/02/2024 19:45

Daily, to check for fraud.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/02/2024 19:46

I think people who are skint (or have been skint), and people who have got loads check often.

people who are in denial about how skint they are: never

those in the middle: as and when

fuckssaaaaake · 03/02/2024 19:47

Every day on my business account as it's so close to being in the red every day that I need to make sure payments aren't bouncing

DragonFly98 · 03/02/2024 19:48

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/02/2024 19:29

Interested @DragonFly98 How does this work?

My mortgage account and bank account are with the same bank. I pay my regular monthly amount. Then every evening I make a payment to round my account down to the nearest £10 so anything from 1p to £9.99, it's an easy way to overpay without really thinking about it.

Perrie80 · 03/02/2024 19:49

Everyday. Got to budget every penny. We have a set amount weekly we can spend.

WhatACluster · 03/02/2024 19:52

I get a notification on my phone when anything goes out of my account including direct debits

I checked today to see how much money I had left for the weekend, will probably check it again during the week.

NewYearResolutions · 03/02/2024 19:53

I’m like you, once or twice a day.

RM2013 · 03/02/2024 19:55

Probably every other day

Kazzyhoward · 03/02/2024 19:56

2 or 3 times a week, just to keep an eye on what's coming in and going out, being nosy for what interest and cash backs I've earned, and to do transfers between accounts to make sure I'm getting every last penny of interest. I like to keep fully on top of things to give me peace of mind I'm not losing/wasting anything.

wheresmyshoe · 03/02/2024 20:00

At least once a day. I had several years of very stressful precarious finances and knowing exactly where I am helps me feel calm and on top of everything.

Holybatrimony · 03/02/2024 20:03

Never. We've got a joint account. DH pays all bills etc. if he sees something odd on the credit card statement he will ask, but generally I don't get involved.

Flavabobble · 03/02/2024 20:04

At least once a day. Once found an unfamiliar transaction for £20 and checked immediately with the bank. There were two more that hadn't yet gone through.
(Got refunded, and a new card)

TrickyD · 03/02/2024 20:06

About every few weeks. The bank gets in touch if there is something odd going on. We pay the credit card bill automatically each month.

Roussette · 03/02/2024 20:07

I'm gobsmacked at leaving it all to a DH! Seriously

I've been married decades and always had automony with finances whilst sharing too

I need that for when he's not around or vice versa

ShadowOfTheSeason · 03/02/2024 20:12

Every morning

onemorerose · 03/02/2024 20:19

Multiple times a day. I have had serious financial difficulty in the past and I like to look in on my savings and add to it, even if only a few pounds because it’s so satisfying to watch it rise. Revolut adds interest daily so I like to see that go up. A few of my savings accounts will need to be used (for the reason they were set up for) soon so I’ll be a bit gutted not to have that money any more.

spicedlemonpie · 03/02/2024 20:20

I look throughout the day i need to keep an eye on my zero balance.
Fine i lied 12p.

Zola1 · 03/02/2024 20:25

Every time I pay for anything as I keep my money in pots in monzo and move it into my balance to ensure I'm conscious about my spending

venusandmars · 03/02/2024 20:33

Once a month, when the paper statements come in.

Furrydogmum · 03/02/2024 20:36

DH is four weekly paid so I check into the joint current account that day and make sure all savings, bill payments are accounted for, and the shopping money is moved to the spending card. I'm monthly paid on the same day so I make sure it has gone in, move planned savings then leave it til the following month and move residual money to savings. I check the shopping card weekly in case it needs a top up. It has taken years to get to this point! There is no right or wrong way of keeping on top of your finances - do what works for you.

IcouldbutIdontwantto · 03/02/2024 20:43

I'd say I check every couple of days - we're incredibly lucky in that we aren't watching the pennies, but I do it so that I spot any fraudulent transactions early. Obviously, 99.99% of the time it's fine, and occasionally I'll check a joint account transaction with DH to check it was him, but still worth it for peace of mind imo.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/02/2024 20:46

Several times a day. Not sure why tbh 😁

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 03/02/2024 20:47

Twice a month: once when my regular payments go in and once when I check all receipts and outgoings against my own records.

Metallicant · 03/02/2024 21:10

once every two months to check I’ve actually been paid (am paid by a convoluted cheque system in one job).

dh checks it obsessively about 10001 times a day so would spot anything untoward or identify any issues.
