DS being bullied for his coat! It’s not that weird is it?

DS turned 7 in dec and I brought him a new coat something different. He absolutely loved it and had lots of compliments from his friends at footie. But his school friends seem to pick up on everything and are so critical.

His school friends keep asking him why his coat is like that. It looks silly and it’s not a proper coat. He stopped wearing it for a little while and then wore it again on Friday and it’s the same stupid questions from them again.

He’s been odd all day today so withdrawn sitting in his room all day wouldn’t come to the park with me and his siblings. Refusing to get dresssed and sitting in his pyjamas and seems to get tearful really quickly.

I don’t know what to do!

It’s a lovely coat!! What colour did you get it in? It seems perfectly normal to me?!

Riverstep · 13/01/2024 21:27

This is such a strange thing for 7 year olds to be doing, 7 year olds aren’t usually interested in their friends coats. If it’s upsetting your son, why doesn’t he just wear a different one for school and keep that one for evenings/ weekends?

NorthernPoppetPrincess · 13/01/2024 21:28

Let’s hope he doesn’t lose that at school! £160 for a coat at primary.
I mean it is lovely, but unnecessary!

AhBiscuits · 13/01/2024 21:29

It's a really normal coat. The kids at his school are odd.

fatandhappy47 · 13/01/2024 21:29

I don't think the coat is the actual issue

crochetmylifeaway · 13/01/2024 21:30

They are very popular jackets. They were when I was at school and now again they have come back into fashion. Every other kid at school wears napapajiri jackets. No idea why your area should be any different to anywhere else

Packofnerves · 13/01/2024 21:30

Just black! Nothing extravagant he doesn’t have to wear it but he loved it when he first got it.

I never paid that much got it in Black Friday sales.

Coat looks like a normal coat. Ridiculous price. Does the school uniform specify no logos? Maybe that’s why they are asking and not bullying

Lovemusic82 · 13/01/2024 21:30

Get him a cheap coat from Asda because that’s probably what the other kids are wearing rather than a £130 coat? Save the expensive one for the weekends.

Sunnydays0101 · 13/01/2024 21:31

What I would do and I know I shouldn’t have to do is go buy a regular black zip up coat for school, etc and keep that coat for ‘good’.

Temporaryname158 · 13/01/2024 21:31

Contact the school about this bullying, because that’s what it is.

its a nice and fashionable coat (my trendy students are wearing these)

oOmoonhaOo · 13/01/2024 21:31

That brand and coat are really popular atm. I work in a secondary school and I see it all the time on different kids

TempleOfBloom · 13/01/2024 21:31

It’s fab!
Unless you got the pink version?

Talk to the teacher and find out what is going on.

Passthepickle · 13/01/2024 21:32

It’s not the cost it’s the bullying which is the issue. Get school to tackle it and get him to practise deflecting comments or being abrasive back.

Legendairy · 13/01/2024 21:32

It's really popular with older teens, it's probably much nicer and also more fashionable than the coats the others are wearing TBH. Kids are weird!

Sodie · 13/01/2024 21:34

Ooh that's a lovely coat, my 11yr old and 16yr old sons would wear that. Speak to the school it probably is much more than this

ShowOfHands · 13/01/2024 21:34

Lots of the students wear that exact top/jacket at our school. It's usually that or a North Face coat.

SpringSparrow · 13/01/2024 21:36

It’s a nice coat. How does the zip work tho? Seems to have a half zip like a hoodie and then a zip down the side? How do you put it on? Or is there another zip under the front pocket? I think I’d talk to his teacher. They shouldn’t be bullying him over his coat😐.

SmallestInTheClass · 13/01/2024 21:36

Buy him a cheap supermarket coat like the other kids. It's a nice coat but is unusual looking. I'd wear it but wouldn't see it as a school coat. Pick your battles. This doesn't feel like one worth fighting for.

Calmdown14 · 13/01/2024 21:37

At 7 is it just because it goes over the head so they don't see it as a coat?

Are they being genuinely nasty or curious but your son doesn't like that kind of attention? Mine wouldn't like these kind of questions even if completely innocent as he hates to stand out in any way.

Spanglybangles · 13/01/2024 21:38

Could it be the zip that goes up the side and under the arm that they find weird? I bought one of these for my son and he refused to wear it as he found the zip too tricky (he was 7 at the time)

This is what I was thinking. Its probably just because he has to pull it over his head rather than having a full zip like most coats.

Packofnerves · 13/01/2024 21:39

DH asked him what his response was and he said he just told them to stop. Then DH rambled on to him about it being a rubbish response and that he needs to be able to say something back to them (which didn’t help).

It just goes over his head no different to a hoody!

Boonmoon · 13/01/2024 21:41

Poor boy. I’d probably just get him new ‘normal’ coat (somewhere cheap) and save that for home/ sell on vinted.
Edited to add, I don’t think there’s anything actually wrong with the coat but it is slightly ‘different’ I guess, which is why he’s getting comments.
