Breaking news; UK signing off on air strikes against Yemen. Is this just going to get worse ?

Since having kids this honestly petrifies me. This world is a mess! I feel like it's one thing since another ever since Covid nothing has felt the same at all! Life before that almost feels completely different and a blur ! Anyone else?

Nah, turn off the news and get on with your life. They like to keep us in a state of perpetual fear.

Namenamchange · 11/01/2024 21:24

Yes very scared, and angry that a few people get to decide the fate of others.

Laiste · 11/01/2024 21:25

Yeah.
I agree.

I'm old enough to remember all the cold war nuclear threats in the 80s ect, and the very many wars since!

But somehow, i think because of the general detachment of everyone here to each other and the feeling of selfishness these days, everything going on overseas feels like it could easily become a threat or a reality of life here too.

Malarandras · 11/01/2024 21:26

Like Billy Joel said, ‘We didn’t start the fire’. The world has always been like this. There have been much bigger, bloodier wars than those going on right now. And we in the UK are pretty well off in that respect right now. There is no front line here. Maybe you need to develop some perspective?

Falkenburg · 11/01/2024 21:29

I don't give it any thought. Nothing is going to happen here.

This is where I am now. Perhaps sadly but at least honestly.

catelynjane · 11/01/2024 21:32

I just don't watch it. That may sound cold but it doesn't do my mental health any good to live in fear.

I can't do anything about it anyway.

the80sweregreat · 11/01/2024 21:33

I'm not impressed with this latest news , but there isn't anything I can do about it
This is why we have governments and people in power to try and sort out things and we just have to see what happens over time
No point worrying , but it's not great news none the less.

IncompleteSenten · 11/01/2024 21:34

If you look back through history we're actually living in probably the most generally peaceful and legally protected time to date.

Well. When we lived in small groups of hunter gatherers we were probably slightly less maniacally homicidal than we've been ever since. The larger the group the more savage we seem to become as a species.

It just feels like it's the worst it's ever been because we're so used to peace, law and order and don't look at human behaviour and wars and barbarism through the last several thousand years. And it feels more personally threatening because we've invented more and more deadly ways to kill each other and don't even have to be in the same country to do it.

Will there be war? Yes. There will always be war. There is always a war going on somewhere. We just don't generally take much notice because it's not likely to affect us.

Will we get drafted? No. nuked? No. Will we see war on our streets? No more than usual.

People living in countries with the least to fear seem sometimes to be the most afraid.

JassyRadlett · 11/01/2024 21:37

OP, this list might be helpful. And that's only Iraq and Syria, not going back to eg Libya. Whether you approve of them or not, UK air strikes in the Middle East and North Africa are nothing new.

British forces air strikes in Iraq and Syria: monthly list

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 21:38

Yeah, terrified

lightand · 11/01/2024 21:40

I'm too old to get too concerned.

Feel like I have seen it all several times before.

And i would agree with this too

Is there actually much left in Yemen worth bombing ? thought the Saudi's had been blowing it to smithereens for quite some time now ?

mumda · 11/01/2024 21:51

A line from Stephen Fry on QI tonight on Dave... Remember the women on the titanic who refused the dessert cart..

Dymaxion · 11/01/2024 21:48

The bombing would be against the Houthi rebels who are attacking ships in the Red Sea trying to get through the Suez Canal and to Europe.

Truthseeker456 · 11/01/2024 22:01

Sigh ... we should be taking to the streets or pressuring our mpS why don't we do this ?

RosaCaramella · 11/01/2024 22:06

I do worry, especially for younger generations. And those who think it won’t impact them, tax payers money pays for such air attacks. Why can’t the UK government just butt out of this one?

pponk · 11/01/2024 22:10

The government can't butt out because allowing this to continue is going to further destroy our economy ..which we can hardly afford at the minute. massive inflation hike again and doubling our energy costs again? they can't just watch that happen can they.

calimali · 11/01/2024 22:14

Cynic in me says it's a very unpopular government and PM looking for a distraction.

Why choose this conflict when there are plenty of other conflicts we could have got involved in? It's all about timing. We have elections looming.

A war we cannot afford.

MumblesParty · 11/01/2024 22:17

Falkenburg · 11/01/2024 21:29

No terrorist revenge attacks? Twin towers? Lockerbie?

Nonimai · 11/01/2024 22:18

lm with you OP. I’m really not a conspiracy theorist but I have become very suspicious of our media particularly since Hamas attacked Israel. There is so much to say and it’s not being said. Another high level Iranian General ,was targeted and killed a couple of weeks ago by drone and I think Iran will bide their time but will retaliate. Iran has suggested they will prevent travel through the Strait of Gibraltar. Yesterday the words of the Swedish defence minister about being prepared for war. Today we are ramping up action alongside the US against the Iranian backed Houthis in Yemen and Iran have seized an oil tanker today in the gulf of Oman. Things are ramping up and so yes im scared,

thinslicedham · 11/01/2024 22:19

I used to pay attention to the news, but now I mostly ignore it. After a certain amount of time, you start to see that the news is an endless loop of misery and infuriating stupidity, and to be honest, life is too short to bother with it unless it's something close to home or something where I can possibly make a bit of difference.

I try to be informed and vote according to my beliefs, but even when the 'right people' win, much of the same old shit still happens. Politicians lie, people die, and... I don't honestly see an end to it. When I disengage from the news, I'm happier. Maybe it's selfish, but on the other hand, me being more miserable won't realistically improve life for anyone else.

Tattletwat · 11/01/2024 22:23

There's plenty of wars going on at any given time. Israel and Gaza has been volatile for a long time. Ukraine actually started back in 2014.
And many other states.

NewYearNewCake · 11/01/2024 21:23
