new Quality Street wrappers moan

garlicandsapphires · 16/12/2023 16:25

I know this is a truly fatuous thing to mither about, but I am grumpy about the new Quality Streets eco wrappers.
Generally I am all in favour of reducing single use plastic, but the old wrappers were so Christmassy. They SMELT of pure Christmas, and it made my annual QS audit a joy.
Now I can't do my audit because the wrappers are ALL WRONG.

AND the crispy orange and green triangle are no more!!

AIBU? (I'm not)

I’m probably the only person who used to make my own 3D glasses using wrappers then draw pictures with matching colour pens….

Anyway, I opened up a tub at work this week and my heart sank when I saw the dismal wrappers, I didn’t eat one. QS have achieved what I thought was impossible, they have actually put me off eating chocolate.

RiverCartwright · 17/12/2023 04:18

I understand, I really do, but half the fun was carefully smoothing out the clear coloured cellophane and then chuckling to yourself at the faces on the telly as you watched with a different coloured one over each eye.

Probably just me. Weird kid. Weirder adult

Ah this thread is telepathy.

I was at the shops yesterday and thought as it's December, we need some QS.

I don't live in UK though, so we get two kinds. The imported version from UK and then the local ones. We only get the small box or the pouch. At the price of them, I think folk night to need to remortgage their house for a tin.

I go to the first shop and see what I now understand is the UK version. The pouch colour is slightly lighter and they were quite cheap. But every bag looked like it had been shoved in a box and suffered a long sea journey and were all dishevelled. Sell by date was begin next year, so I though you cheeky arses, sending all the due to expire chocs our way. I didn't get them. Not that they wouldnt last until the bb date anyway, but they just looked...so drab. (I didn't not notice the wrappers inside to be fair. I will look at them in depth next time I am there).

Then I went to the next shop, a standard grocery store. There were pouches again, no boxes and no tubs, but this one, same size as previous pouch, was double the price. But nice bright packaging (again I didn't notice the inner wrappings which is now my next mission), and this was the local version. Double the price! How?

Well I didn't buy them. And the reason for that is......our version do not have orange cream inside! Wtaf! Everyone knows they are the best of the bunch. Those orange crispy things came in a few years back and I'm not impressed with those. We do get the green triangle but they are tiny now, and youde be lucky to find more than two purple ones.

There was no way I was buying an almost expired bag, nor an overpriced bag with no OC in them. So we are on Quality Street boycott here.

I ended up getting dupes, also made locally by nestles chocolate opposition, (at half the price) and they are waay better. No tin sadly so the old gold Lindt tin is being made use of.

These are old school QS, even have a peanut butter one inside. Including strawberry and orange cream. And toffees, but we aren't a toffee house. They will get left for last and eaten in desperation at the end of December not doubt.

I does feel wrong not having the originals this year, but honestly they have now gone too far. And now to see they have messed with the wrappers too. Wtf.

I may report back on my QS investigation as I'm also intruiged now.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 17/12/2023 07:42

I've just remembered those wrappers were educational we used to make stained glass type window decorations with them. (As well as looking at TV through them).

Londonrach1 · 17/12/2023 07:43

I know...won't bother again getting them or roses and it's the wrappers that make it.

PinkCyclamen · 17/12/2023 09:32

AppleCrispMacchiato · 16/12/2023 21:12

I'm genuinely pissed off, I left a pink wrapper lying on the kitchen counter and I guess some water splashed on it, and when went to throw it away the next day all the colour had leached from the wrapper and into the counter, which is white. So now I have a big permanent pink stain on my white counter. I've scrubbed it a million times, I've used bleach, it just won't come off.

I live in a rental so that's going to cost me money when I move out!

You'd think they'd test the bloody things to ensure that they're colour fast.

Bar Keepers Friend will get it out - test a bit on an out of the way bit of counter first though. I've used it to get ink off the surface of my white high gloss kitchen table.

Helendegenerate · 17/12/2023 09:36

So are you saying that Roses still look like Roses? Proper wrappers etc?

I bought 2 X QS one for myself and one for a gift.

They should change the name and replace the Quality with. ??? 😐

AgentJohnson · 17/12/2023 09:53

I bought two pick and mix tins from Peter Jones and I crammed them full with orange and strawberry creams and oh the joy of not having to deal with fudge and those stupid green triangles anymore is profound. Things change and single use plastic really isn’t ok anymore, you will get used to it.

I came back to The Hague from London last week with an empty Fanta plastic bottle because in the Netherlands plastic bottles and cans have a deposit on them. Yes it’s a pain having them mount up in the house and queuing to get back the deposit but it quickly becomes part of your routine.

Could they work on the new packaging, yes they could but that doesn’t mean going back to plastic. I do miss the gooseberry creams though and I question the shrinking tin/ tub sizes but I’m not mad at paper wrappers.

LittleBearPad · 17/12/2023 09:55

Gooseberry creams??

OMG

Green wrappers?

I miss the red cracknell.

Vitriolinsanity · 17/12/2023 13:52

They were a Christmas decoration in their own right in my childhood home, decanted into a cut glass bowl.

Now they just look glum.

I'm imagining every tub (nasty, nasty) being opened with a little "oh!" Of disappointment this year.

Also, having eaten one or two at work in the interest of science. I've concluded they don't taste right either. It's like drinking coke from a plastic bottle.

Benibidibici · 17/12/2023 13:54

You can still buy the large tins (2kg). I get one every year. I preferred the old wrappers but i get it, we have to reduce plastic waste.

Vitriolinsanity · 17/12/2023 13:55

My dad used to make little gold goblets from the toffee ones whilst he watched James Bond on Christmas Day.

My dad used to make little gold goblets from the toffee ones whilst he watched James Bond on Christmas Day.

Snap! So did mine.
I opened a tub the other day and I was immediately like "wth have they done to the wrappers"?
I'm an 80's child and I remember my parents and grandparents always having a tin of QS at Christmas, and the tins then were huge and absolutely overflowing. Now they are so small and hardly any in them, especially the nicest ones, seems mostly the toffee ones.
I'm sure I remember a coffee cream when I was little as well.
I remember as soon as you took the lid off the tin (or jar, I remember my grandparents sometimes having big jars) the smell of the chocolates and the bright shiny wrappers that looked like the Christmas tree lights just made me feel so Christmassy.
Good times. Just not the same now

enchantedsquirrelwood · 17/12/2023 17:34

Hatty65 · 16/12/2023 16:35

I've just opened a pack and DS (18) was extremely vocal in his disappointment at how 'un-Christmassy' the wrappers were, which is unlike him as he's usually too busy being 'gangsta' to care.

He also said 'It's such a load of bollocks about 'being green' when they shove them in a great plastic tub!' which I agree with.

Yes, he's absolutely right. A tin or a cardboard box is much better than a pointless plastic tub.

We are now boycotting Quality St as it's rubbish and have the M&S box (which is a box) instead. Not perfect, but has proper wrappers and you get quite a lot in a £5 box.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 17/12/2023 17:35

Roses and Celebrations are rubbish too, though I'd buy Heroes.

Yawn. People’s moans on here make me realise how boring a lot of people’s lives are

Pottedpalm · 17/12/2023 17:47

Iwantmyoldnameback · 17/12/2023 18:39

I didn't even really like QS but they were Christmas. I had forgotten about the gold goblets too.
I've enjoyed this chat sad cow that I am obviously.

Can we also give an honorable mention to liqueur chocolates with sugar lining the chocolate?
