new Quality Street wrappers moan

I know this is a truly fatuous thing to mither about, but I am grumpy about the new Quality Streets eco wrappers.
Generally I am all in favour of reducing single use plastic, but the old wrappers were so Christmassy. They SMELT of pure Christmas, and it made my annual QS audit a joy.
Now I can't do my audit because the wrappers are ALL WRONG.

AND the crispy orange and green triangle are no more!!

AIBU? (I'm not)

Back up the bus!!!

I haven't RTR because I'm too stressed!!

im with you with the wrappers, but let's deal with the fact they've done away with the crunch orange one and the triangle.

I need confirmation please!

I still haven't bought any yet, sitting on the fence because of the wrappers, but if there aren't any crunchy orange (by far the best!!) I can get off the fence!

They do a bar of the crispy orange ones ... came across it last week, tastes exactly the same but unfortunately is the equivalent of 10 individual chocolates, and I ate it all in an afternoon. For that reason I will not be buying a tin or bar again.

PinkCyclamen · 16/12/2023 20:49

I bought a customised tin from John Lewis last year as i like a proper tin and not a plastic tub and like the fact we could pick what we wanted in it (whilst having to accept i was paying though the nose for this). I took it in to JL this year to get a refill expecting them to ask what i wanted and carefully weigh it out. But no - i was allowed to fill it myself and the lady on the counter said so long as I could close the lid I should cram in as many as i could. I was literally banging the tin on the counter to pack them in 🤣. I can forgive the slightly dull wrappers as my tin is full to the brim (and no disgusting strawberry creams or coconut ones).

EvilElsa · 16/12/2023 20:54

We won't be buying any this year. Horrible plastic tubs, ugly wrappers. I loved the crafts with the wrappers, I even carried on and did this with my kids in the 2000s. Nothing special about them anymore.

Leafysuburb · 16/12/2023 21:00

Couldn't care less about the wrappers.

But can we all stop and discuss the size of the caramel stick one? It's half the length! The micro penis of Christmas chocolate.

This is spot on - nothing special about them anymore.

AppleCrispMacchiato · 16/12/2023 21:12

I'm genuinely pissed off, I left a pink wrapper lying on the kitchen counter and I guess some water splashed on it, and when went to throw it away the next day all the colour had leached from the wrapper and into the counter, which is white. So now I have a big permanent pink stain on my white counter. I've scrubbed it a million times, I've used bleach, it just won't come off.

I live in a rental so that's going to cost me money when I move out!

You'd think they'd test the bloody things to ensure that they're colour fast.

So did I with my children in the early 2000s!

DieuEtMonTwat · 16/12/2023 21:16

The other annoying bit is that I throw the new wrappers in the ordinary kitchen bin. At least I did creative things with the old wrappers before they went in the same bin. So their eco credentials are neither here nor there, as they end up in the same place but involve none of the fun.

Fionaville · 16/12/2023 21:16

I agree. They've lost their Christmas magic.

I have a white work top. My DS left an ink drawing on it which got wet and stained it. I left bleach spray on it in a puddle overnight and it was clear in the morning.

notahappybunny7 · 16/12/2023 21:32

Well I bought the caramel only bag and there are no toffee pennys in there, only the long toffee ones and the caramel swirls. I was fucking annoyed.

I'm so angry for you

1984Winston · 16/12/2023 21:38

I'm all for making more things recyclable but I was so dissapointed with the tub I just bought I don't think I will ever buy anymore, it really made me sad seeing so few sweets and the ugly wrappers

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 16/12/2023 21:46

My box had the orange crunch and green triangles and these were still in the old packaging whilst everything else was paper.

oakleaffy · 16/12/2023 22:44

I had to google the new wrappers..they don't look jewel~like like the old style.
I shan't be buying any.
The bright wrappers were so nostalgic and fun- loved playing with them as a child.

LittleBearPad · 16/12/2023 22:59

Mine came in a proper tin whereas the celebrations were in a tub. Still taste the same!

mondaytosunday · 16/12/2023 23:07

OMG my son filtched some from work and gave me a couple - I am shocked! The old wrappers made them look like jewels! And memories of my dad making little wine cups from the tin foil wrappers inside...
shame shame it's just not the Christmas at all.

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 17/12/2023 00:18

They've lost their Christmas magic.

It's because the Queen is no longer with us. Quality Street and the Queen always went together in my family on Christmas Day. Now Her Majesty has gone, Quality Street has gone too.

(Not that my parents were particularly royalist, it was just that by the time the Queen came on, dinner was cleared away and people had digested their turkey and Christmas pud enough to feel able to tackle the chocs. But it did become a tradition that the Quality Street came out for the Queen.)

Comefromaway · 17/12/2023 00:27

Drama teacher forums are wondering what they are going to use to teach stage lighting now. They used the wrappers as gels with a torch.

Babla · 17/12/2023 00:46

AND the crispy orange and green triangle are no more!!

We still have both?

MintJulia · 17/12/2023 01:14

Totally agree.

I don't like the chocolates themselves, flabby, cheap and too little cocoa solid, but for conferences near Christmas, the wrappers were always a cheerful Christmassy addition to a trade stand.

I know that's not great for the environment but the new ones are depressingly drab. I'll have to find a longer-lasting alternative.

Caerulea · 17/12/2023 01:24

They seem to have forgotten the reason they are so popular is nostalgia & the wrapping is part of that. I opened a tub yesterday & ds14 commented how crap & boring they are & he barely ate any. Then ate none tonight. When he's an adult there's going to be no joy attached to these so he won't do the nostalgia purchase. Tbh, I'll not bother after this year either 🤷🏼‍♀️

tobee · 17/12/2023 01:49

According to Wikipedia the whole point of Quality Street was to make opening a tin of chocolates an affordable and exciting sensory experience and the wrappers were very much part of that. Now list to us in the 2020s Sad

The pictures of the caramel sweets that are contained in the bag are literally shown on the bag. While this may be a disappointment to you, it's your own fault for not paying attention to what was shown on the package.

I've not bought Quality Street in years, but I agree that the new wrappers look bland and boring. If you go to their Instagram account (www.instagram.com/qualitystreetuki) you can clearly see that a) the green triangles seem to still very much exist b) the coffee creams exist (but only at John Lewis c) the big tins also exist (but only at a John Lewis) d) you can still use the paper wrappers for crafts, but just different crafts than you've used them for previously.
