In trouble, I grabbed the best room!

I'm on holiday with a group of mates; they have partners and I dont. Last time we went away together the couple that arrived first at the cottage grabbed the best room, with no shame or negotiation! We all ended up joking that this time round we would race eachother for the best room...all a bit whacky races and jovial! Anyway, I got there well before anyone else for various travel related reasons, so grabbed the best room. Big with an ensuite. The other rooms were nice just a bit smaller...one didnt have an ensuite. Anyhow, one of the couples has kicked off - because Im single, I shouldn't have the biggest room apparently. Given they're all essentially nice rooms, this feels a bit shitty...should I have quietly taken a 'lesser' room just because I'm a solo traveller?? All so petty I know, but peed off at the sour atmosphere after all the joking about rooms in the run up.

I’d literally just say ‘no, I don’t think so’ and walk off. Cheeky bastards.

AQuantityOfNaughtyCats · 27/10/2023 19:51

Depends if you’re paying per person or per room really.

Ihaterhymingrabbit · 27/10/2023 19:52

You’d only be unreasonable if your room had a double and the other had a single.

Otherwise go ahead and enjoy the best room 😊

Treebark · 27/10/2023 19:52

Ah yes, how's the costs split?

ShirleyPhallus · 27/10/2023 19:52

Have you paid per head or per person?

PamFritters · 27/10/2023 19:52

Was the cost split by room or person? Have you paid the same as a couple?

If not you are massively taking the piss.

If you’ve paid the same as the couples then they can suck it up.

AlisonDonut · 27/10/2023 19:53

Either the first person bagsies the best room or they don't.

Their rules.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/10/2023 19:54

I agree that per room or per person matters.

Singletraveller · 27/10/2023 19:55

Hmm. I did get a bit of a discount....not a 50% one though. Complicates things tho.

Neuronamechange · 27/10/2023 19:55

Paid per person? I can understand the annoyance.
Paid per room? Not wrong at all. It’s part of the pre-agreed game.

Edit - I type slow! I see others have said the same!

HomeatRoseCottage · 27/10/2023 19:55

No, they’re being twats. You aren’t any less entitled to a nice room just because you aren’t there with a partner.

Lavender14 · 27/10/2023 19:56

Tbh I think that's a shitty way to treat someone because they're single. One of my friends is single, the rest of us are coupled up and I would never ever dream of telling her she needs to take a shittier room because she's single. That's a dick move. The only thing that would make me think otherwise is if it was a double vs two singles or a single in the other room.

Jackiebrambles · 27/10/2023 19:56

How much less did you pay? I think you might be being a bit cheeky.

dammit88 · 27/10/2023 19:57

I think as the single person I would probably have taken the smallest room just because to kind of seems the reasonable thing to do, given as you say they are all nice rooms

Jackiebrambles · 27/10/2023 19:57

I’d be naffed off if I paid more than you but you got an en suite. I do understand though, when I was single and all my friends were coupled up I always got the shit single bed teeny room.

SarahAndQuack · 27/10/2023 19:57

I think you're being cheeky if you didn't pay as much as the couples.

But it sounds like a bit of an odd set up TBH. I wouldn't expect adults to be negotiating/feeling shame about room allocations; the 'joking' sounds tedious.

HappyCamperTent · 27/10/2023 19:58

Is the couple kicking off the ones who have ended up without the ensuite?

Singletraveller · 27/10/2023 20:00

@HappyCamperTent funnily enough, no!

Singletraveller · 27/10/2023 20:02

@Jackiebrambles Its tricky tho...I have paid more per person for my break....but less per room, if you see what I mean.

OP posts:
HelloItsMeHowAreYou · 27/10/2023 20:02

Well unless you got a 50% discount for the room, then you paid more per person than they did, so you deserve to have the bigger room

Singletraveller · 27/10/2023 20:02

Plus no one said anything before, it was all hilarity about who would get there first (until it was me.)

Ponoka7 · 27/10/2023 20:03

You've saved the couples from arguing over it. If you all go the pub, buy a round.

dammit88 · 27/10/2023 20:04

If all the rooms are nice, as you say though, why would you take the biggest room as the only solo person? That just seems a dick move to me?

OneCup · 27/10/2023 20:05

Given the race thing, I think it's fine. If not I think I would have gone for a smaller room in that situation.

Goldbar · 27/10/2023 20:05

I would have taken the smallest room with an ensuite (assuming at least a double bed). Just because one person doesn't need as much space as two people but I'd want a bathroom and decent bed.
