DP says I'm selfish for having DD's birthday cake gluten free

Basically thread title.

DD turns one at the start of December. I've arranged for a local baker to make a cake for her. I asked for it to be gluten free as I have celiac disease.

DP said this was selfish. His reasoning being that gluten free cakes aren't as nice as normal cakes. He can't seem to come up with any other reason.

I just wanted to eat some of DDs first birthday cake.

i have coeliac too and all birthday cakes in our house are GF .

SkyFullofStars1975 · 24/10/2023 20:12

I've got 2 coeliac grandkids and have perfected a cake that no one else realised was gluten free. Took a few goes to perfect, I will admit...

Becky Excell;s (glutenfreecuppatea) website has got some amazing recipes, especially the chocolate cake with ground almonds.

duchiebun · 24/10/2023 20:12

Just buy two

3luckystars · 24/10/2023 20:13

The cake is for your daughter, not you.

AllWeWantToDo · 24/10/2023 20:13

He's talking rubbish, we had a gluten free and dairy free one for dgd 1st birthday and it tasted no different to the ones we usually order for the other dcs

Gluten free cakes are gross to be fair, who else will be eating it?

Nonsense.

I make gluten free cakes that nobody realises ar me GF

HeddaGarbled · 24/10/2023 20:14

I can see both your points of view. Mini cup cakes?

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 24/10/2023 20:14

He can sort his own cake out if he wants one.

to be fair to him I've never had a nice GF cake, and I've tired lots 😂 DW is gluten free and is forever making me try cakes, biscuits and bread.

44PumpLane · 24/10/2023 20:14

If he feels that strongly about it then he can pull his thumb out his arse and sort out another cake.

You arranged a cake, the 1 year old isn't going to have any concept of what cake is or should be, so you rightly chose something you can enjoy too, he can sort something out too if he wants!

BrieEncounter · 24/10/2023 20:14

YANBU as a 1 year old won't care. But if catering for more than just the 3 of you I would get 2 cakes

Sorry but I've never had a gf cake that tasted anything other than terrible

KnickersOfDoom · 24/10/2023 20:14

What a prat he is

Dogman · 24/10/2023 20:14

All cakes in this house are GF so that all family members can have some. Your H is a dick.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 24/10/2023 20:15

I think it’s fine for a first birthday. Even for a few more years. He’s right though gluten free cake isn’t as nice and once they’re at school and are having parties with friends I’d let her have one that isn’t gluten free and just suck it up.

AllWeWantToDo · 24/10/2023 20:15

3luckystars · 24/10/2023 20:13

The cake is for your daughter, not you.

She's 1 , she's not going to care if it's gluten free

Coffeerum · 24/10/2023 20:15

I love how all the suggestions are that OP should go out of her way to buy a separate cake/ cupcakes for her DH.
If he’s going to be that fussy he can get his own cupcake considering OP is the one who has organised the birthday cake in the first place.

W0tnow · 24/10/2023 20:16

Gluten free cake isn't great?? It is! It's delicious!

This one is more for grown ups but it is one of my favourites.

Floralnomad · 24/10/2023 20:16

We always have gf cake as our daughter is coeliac , there is nothing wrong with a good gf cake .

Icopewhenihope · 24/10/2023 20:17

My sister did this for her child’s 3rd birthday. We all had to eat it. Lets just say a lot was wasted.

Loverofoxbowlakes · 24/10/2023 20:17

Regular cake is better than gf.

But gf cake is far superior to no cake...

He ibbbu op, get the gf cake!

megletthesecond · 24/10/2023 20:18

Yanbu. Most of the supermarket chocolate GF cakes are really good now. I bought GF for my teens birthdays and they never noticed.

I'm GF. If it's just family, I buy a gluten free cake for my children's birthdays because I want to be able to eat it, and no one objects because most GF cake is very nice. If it was a party involving friends or other children I would order a cake with gluten just because there would be a much wider selection. If I was willing to splash out I would order a gluten free cake from a posh bakery but I wouldn't want to spend that much on a children's cake. So it depends!

AhBiscuits · 24/10/2023 20:18

Who else will be having it? I can see his logic in making everyone else have an inferior cake to suit one person. There's a gluten free kid in my son's class and everyone gets a gf cupcake for her at parties.

INeedAnotherName · 24/10/2023 20:19

He can buy his own cake if he's that bothered. But seriously who minimises the health of their partner in this way? Oh yeah, selfish wankers. Is he as horrible and undermining in others ways too?

What a ridiculous statement.
’Proper food’? Like lots of ultra high processed cakes,

Mind. Boggled
