To think rainbow hoodies are unprofessional?

I work in an office that doesn't have a dress code (tech field so very casual environment). Most people wear a mix of jeans and plain t-shirts, polos, hoodies with the company logo on it, sweaters etc. All in fairly neutral colours.

We recently had a new transfer to my department. She seems nice, very carefree, and she's good at her job. Today though, she came in with a bright rainbow, tie-dyed hoodie from a popular movie. It's not subtle at all and the quote from the movie is clearly printed on the front. It really stands out! Yes, I will mind my own business and not say a word but AIBU to think this is just really unprofessional?

If there's no dress code how can you say it's not professional?

Sunmoonstars33 · 20/10/2023 17:46

YABVU if there's no dress code then there's no dress code. You cant just make one up yourself about the colour of peoples hoodies. Honestly, get a grip.

Ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyourbiscuit · 20/10/2023 17:46

i can’t see how her hoodie could be an issue if you can wear hoodies? Unless it has swearing on it?

madnessitellyou · 20/10/2023 17:46

YAB wildly U.

There's no dress code.

CRbear · 20/10/2023 17:47

She’s just Ken!

FatOaf · 20/10/2023 17:47

What's the quote?

(Sorry, I don't know what movie you're referring to.)

Shantotto · 20/10/2023 17:47

Is it the I am Kenough one from Barbie? I’m very jealous if so!

EsmeSusanOgg · 20/10/2023 17:48

It's a Friday in an office with no dress code. In an industry famous for being casual about dress. YABU.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 20/10/2023 17:48

There's no dress code so surely she can wear what she wants. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean she can't or shouldn't wear it.

toastofthetown · 20/10/2023 17:48

She is Kenough! If there’s no dress code and people are already wearing hoodies then I cannot see much of a problem with that hoodie.

FullyAwareIMightBU · 20/10/2023 17:48

Fully aware I'm probably BU btw just a shock from what I'm used to when it comes to dressing!

If there's no dress code how can you say it's not professional?

This ^^

You're talking like she's turned up in a bloody bikini. It's a rainbow hoodie, it sounds perfectly fine for the environment you're working in.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 20/10/2023 17:50

OMG is it the ‘I’m kenough’ hoodie?! At least three people in my massive office has one, they look fab Grin

PhantomUnicorn · 20/10/2023 17:50

"unprofessional"
How is it unprofessional to wear what she likes in an office where there is no dress code?

Conkersinautumn · 20/10/2023 17:50

There's no dress code. Nobody made you the style police. You know you're over the line but you just had to have a little bitch

Really OP?

Azandme · 20/10/2023 17:51

I'm shocked that anyone in tech is shocked by a rainbow hoody.

Are you homophobic? That's literally the only thing I can imagine might cause rainbow consternation.

WhateverMate · 20/10/2023 17:51

What on earth are you talking about if there's no dress code?

Plus, how is it less professional than wearing jeans for example?

skilpadde · 20/10/2023 17:52

Your office has a dress culture, which you've come to consider as the norm.

Even if you love a neutral palette, how can colourful clothes or, horror of horrors, a movie quote, be seen as unprofessional in a workplace with no dress code?

Not to your taste, sure, but what's the mental pathway to "unprofessional!"?

weefella · 20/10/2023 17:52

It's a hoodie in a workplace with no dress code and where other people also wear hoodies.

If you choose to wear neutral colours, that's up to you. If she chooses to wear rainbows, that's up to her.

YABU
