To think rainbow hoodies are unprofessional?

FullyAwareIMightBU · 20/10/2023 17:44

I work in an office that doesn't have a dress code (tech field so very casual environment). Most people wear a mix of jeans and plain t-shirts, polos, hoodies with the company logo on it, sweaters etc. All in fairly neutral colours.

We recently had a new transfer to my department. She seems nice, very carefree, and she's good at her job. Today though, she came in with a bright rainbow, tie-dyed hoodie from a popular movie. It's not subtle at all and the quote from the movie is clearly printed on the front. It really stands out! Yes, I will mind my own business and not say a word but AIBU to think this is just really unprofessional?

I used to work in an office where two women would wear dressing gowns and slippers around the building!

Dorisbonson · 20/10/2023 20:42

For context ive worked in banking, marketing and at a global IT firm (think top 3 in the world). Hoodies still suck and are low level.

LindaLyndell · 20/10/2023 20:43

Feel the Kenergy and get a grip, I had mine on today too, people love it! 🌈

byteme1011 · 20/10/2023 20:44

I agree with @Dorisbonson in that I wouldn't wear a hoody if I was front facing. I don't dress casually if we have shareholders in; keep stuff in the office if I need to present anything

glossypeach · 20/10/2023 20:47

She’s the Penelope Garcia of the office. And yes, that’s a compliment.

User8907 · 20/10/2023 20:51

Was the hoodie the only thing she wore? if yes, then I could, potentially, see your point.

But perfectly acceptable in some sectors and in some circumstances.
I work at a university and my head of department sometimes wears a hoody.
He's certainly not 'low level'

I've met the Vice Chancellors of leading UK universities who wear black jeans and T Shirt but when they are pitching me and asking me for money in a formal environment they are in a suit.

And your point is?
I clearly said sometimes wears a hoody.
Most professional adults are capable of dressing for the occasion.
There is nothing to suggest the person the OP is describing was having to do anything close to pitching for money.

nearlywinteragain · 20/10/2023 21:03

There is obviously a dress culture in certain spaces, court I'll wear a suit, seeing kids anything that will help relax them goes.
I'm the same professional person with same letters after my name in these settings. My abilities, knowledge and skilled aren't enhanced by dark polyester, it doesn't have magic powers.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 20/10/2023 21:04

I used to work in a firm of solicitors where the senior partner wore some interesting t shirts.. I'm talking a panda wearing sunglasses shooting guns, some weed related cartoons. He was really good at his job despite his wacky clothing choices.

InSpainTheRain · 20/10/2023 21:07

It's tech, there is no dress code - Yabu!

DuesToTheDirt · 20/10/2023 21:09

If there's no dress code she can wear what she likes.

People in my (tech) office wear holey jumpers, shorts, no shoes... not what I would choose for myself, but I don't care what other people wear.

Tortugaa · 20/10/2023 21:10

Do you work in marketing?

DancyNancy · 20/10/2023 21:12

Your posts are confusing.
You talk about professional expectations and colours....but in jeans and hoodies.....
It's kind of contradictory.

I've worked with dress codes of business, business casual or anything goes. In none of those scenarios was it "jeans and hoodies as long as they are in muted professional colours"

If the hoody has swear words or offensive slurs I'd have an issue, or a bikini top and hot pants I might say inappropriate.....

Otherwise yabu

Sartre · 20/10/2023 21:12

There is no dress code so technically someone could rock up in a unicorn costume and that would be ok. I don’t know why you have an issue with a rainbow hoodie in this sort of environment.

Janinejones · 20/10/2023 21:15

I'm with you @FullyAwareIMightBU , for me even with no dress code I think you have to be serious in that you demonstrate that you are not being frivolous or slapdash. For me it is about getting toward self respect.
I just read this through. I seem to have become my Mother! Helllppp

My old company did a dress down day/s when we had some v hot weather

It then turned into a regular thing and continued for months

In the end they had to send an email as people were coming in looking ridiculous. Senior people in full tracksuits, caps and air max

I’ve no issue with this if the job gets done.

Picturesofowls · 20/10/2023 21:30

I want a rainbow hoodie!! 🌈 sounds cool.

Passepartoute · 20/10/2023 21:30

FullyAwareIMightBU · 20/10/2023 17:48

Fully aware I'm probably BU btw just a shock from what I'm used to when it comes to dressing!

How on earth can it be a shock? Most people would just think "Nice to see some colour" and forget about it.

ASGIRC · 20/10/2023 21:31

Ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyourbiscuit · 20/10/2023 17:46

i can’t see how her hoodie could be an issue if you can wear hoodies? Unless it has swearing on it?

The hoodie probably says I am Kenough!

Passepartoute · 20/10/2023 21:33

FullyAwareIMightBU · 20/10/2023 17:59

What? It has nothing to do with LGBT? It's that it's merch from a movie and in bright colours. When I was in school, I remember having a chat with the careers counsellor and was told that professional colours are usually muted and that navy/grey/beige/cream and solid dark/pastel colours are the way to go. Maybe things have changed since then.

I'm prepared to bet that that careers counsellor had no concept of offices with no dress code. He probably told you you had to wear skirts at a respectable length, well-ironed shirts, smart jackets, shoes with a 2" heel, and neutral coloured tights, too.

ASGIRC · 20/10/2023 21:40

saythatagaintome · 20/10/2023 18:31

I think it is unprofessional. But those saying it isn’t probably show up to work in a tracksuit or their pjs.

came back to add… tie dye will never be profesional. Sorry.

Edited

The point here is that there is no dress code.
I have a few My Little Pony hoodies, and I wear them to work, because there is no dress code!
My colleagues dress however they like as well!
There is no "professional" here, because there is no dress code!

frogswimming · 20/10/2023 21:45

When I started work in the olden days (late 90s) they had only just allowed women to wear dark coloured trouser suits rather than skirt suits in my office. Even though the job involved visiting building sites. Times have changed thankfully! Even in that industry there is a dress code of professional or something still. But your office has no dress code, so Yabu.

Rockbird · 20/10/2023 21:49

It sounds hideous but that's just because my colour scheme tends towards Goth 😀

Not that it matters though, I'm told us lowly admin sorts only have very low standards of professionalism to aim for so I'm going to work in pjs after half term.
