To think rainbow hoodies are unprofessional?

I work in an office that doesn't have a dress code (tech field so very casual environment). Most people wear a mix of jeans and plain t-shirts, polos, hoodies with the company logo on it, sweaters etc. All in fairly neutral colours.

We recently had a new transfer to my department. She seems nice, very carefree, and she's good at her job. Today though, she came in with a bright rainbow, tie-dyed hoodie from a popular movie. It's not subtle at all and the quote from the movie is clearly printed on the front. It really stands out! Yes, I will mind my own business and not say a word but AIBU to think this is just really unprofessional?

What? It has nothing to do with LGBT? It's that it's merch from a movie and in bright colours. When I was in school, I remember having a chat with the careers counsellor and was told that professional colours are usually muted and that navy/grey/beige/cream and solid dark/pastel colours are the way to go. Maybe things have changed since then.

Maybe things have changed since you were in school? I suppose it is just about possible.

Literally read this thread thinking it was about the jumpers kids wear to Rainbows

Fingeronthebutton · 20/10/2023 19:40

I don’t think this is the office for you. If you were to see my daughter, who btw is earning £100,000 per year you would could possibly pass out. And then there’s her tattoos 😂

I'm shocked that anyone in tech is shocked by a rainbow hoody.

Are you homophobic? That's literally the only thing I can imagine might cause rainbow consternation.

I wondered this as well.

babyproblems · 20/10/2023 19:42

Agree if there’s no dress code it’s totally fine. I can’t stand boring classic work wear. So what If she wears a bright colourful hoodie! I’ve worked in creative fields where everyone wears whatever and it’s so interesting and refreshing! X

SomersetDreams · 20/10/2023 19:43

At least they didnt come in in a fur coat and headband lol

SoShallINever · 20/10/2023 19:43

One of my adult (techie) DC went to work in a bright yellow Pokémon hoodie today, complete with sticking up ears.

Aworldofmyown · 20/10/2023 19:50

So, where would someone get one of these hoodies? Asking for a friend.

WingedHermes · 20/10/2023 19:53

She Kenough!

I’m in tech and people on my team wear hoodies with Snoopy and Winnie the Pooh. And around Christmas we do contests with ugly sweaters , roughly from November to January… sometimes I think it continues the whole year. And every week we have a theme-Thursday… like “autumn” or “green” or “Disney “ and lots of people will dress that way.

I think lots of tech is extra playful and less conventional… depending on the company ofcourse.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 20/10/2023 20:00

Christ, you’d have a coronary if you saw what I wear to work.

Not a muted colour in sight…

RedSquirrelsRock · 20/10/2023 20:01

Had to look up the 'offending hoodie' and I want one, the brighter the better with my clothles. I'm old enough to know better but I really don't give a fuck what people think of my out there colours and azure blue hair that I've rocked for 20 odd years.

AllWeWantToDo · 20/10/2023 20:03

I've just ordered one for ds2

Jog on with that shite for a start.

weebarra · 20/10/2023 20:09

As a careers adviser, I wouldn't take fashion advice from most careers advisers!

ClinkyWotsit · 20/10/2023 20:09

I internationally wore red to a final round interview at my current company after reading some research that a majority of interviewers believed women dressed in red came across as aggressive and would be reluctant to hire them.

I quite like red and I didn’t want to work for a company where I wouldn’t fit in wearing a brightly coloured dress. Turned out that I blended in with their corporate colours, including a couple of walls in the interview room - the interviewer remarked that I’d made the effort to be ‘on brand’.

TheOGCCL · 20/10/2023 20:10

I was talking to a friend about this - we are from an era (pre pandemic certainly) where what you wore was important, you were judged if you didn’t turn up to work in a reasonably smart outfit and people associated that with less good performance and commitment. Dress for the job you want.

Now it’s a lot more about what value you are bringing with your actual work. I think it will take some time for the previous attitude to filter/grow/die out. I do still judge people on what they are wearing but I think history will prove me to be an old fart not in touch with modern life.

Unless you left school pre-1950, your school careers counsellor was talking bollocks, but more to the point, have you seriously never noticed that millions of professional women absolutely do wear colour and patterns to work every bloody day?!

Even if ‘professional colours’ did exist as a concept in 2023, it would still not apply in your workplace because your workplace has no dress code. Get a grip.

byteme1011 · 20/10/2023 20:18

This could literally be me haha I went to work today (work in tech) in a tie dye hoody with my gym logo on it

PeopleAreWeird · 20/10/2023 20:28

Grip needed !!!!

PeopleAreWeird · 20/10/2023 20:31

Why? Why are there weird threads like these!!!

TheCompactPussycat · 20/10/2023 20:32

I thought you were talking about me for a moment there OP. I wore a hoodie with a rainbow logo on it at work today!

I am a professional though. I even have lots of initials after my name in case people are confused by my attire. 😂

Dorisbonson · 20/10/2023 20:41

Personally think hoodies are very unprofessional unless you work in back office IT or are a band roadie.
