To think rainbow hoodies are unprofessional?

I work in an office that doesn't have a dress code (tech field so very casual environment). Most people wear a mix of jeans and plain t-shirts, polos, hoodies with the company logo on it, sweaters etc. All in fairly neutral colours.

We recently had a new transfer to my department. She seems nice, very carefree, and she's good at her job. Today though, she came in with a bright rainbow, tie-dyed hoodie from a popular movie. It's not subtle at all and the quote from the movie is clearly printed on the front. It really stands out! Yes, I will mind my own business and not say a word but AIBU to think this is just really unprofessional?

I mean how can she possibly be a professional and good at her job in a rainbow hood when the professional people wear a plain hoodie just disgusting.......

YABU OP. Does what she wears affect her work? Of course he doesn't.

readingismycardio · 20/10/2023 17:56

You do realise that originally, a rainbow is a natural phenomenon rather than a symbol for the LGBTQ community, right?

WanderingWitches · 20/10/2023 17:59

She sounds fab!
Which hoody is it?

FullyAwareIMightBU · 20/10/2023 17:59

What? It has nothing to do with LGBT? It's that it's merch from a movie and in bright colours. When I was in school, I remember having a chat with the careers counsellor and was told that professional colours are usually muted and that navy/grey/beige/cream and solid dark/pastel colours are the way to go. Maybe things have changed since then.

Thankfully, yes things have very much changed since then.

🤣OP most people didn’t take those dodgy 80s/90s careers advisors seriously when we met them but 30 years later? Blimey that’s commitment to fashion advice.

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 20/10/2023 18:02

I’d say take some advice from my username on this one, OP! 😁

ClearConfusion · 20/10/2023 18:03

YABU. No dress code = no dress code.

Overcooker · 20/10/2023 18:05

I mean…it obviously isn’t professional, but if there’s no professional dress code (or any dress code at all) it’s hard to perceive the issue.

CesareBorgia · 20/10/2023 18:05

Unless the slogan from the film is offensive, I don't see the issue.

They have changed, in this case there is no dress code? So why must everybody wear muted, boring colours all the time. You only live once ffs. You must be a delight to work with, no offence.

LucyEwing · 20/10/2023 18:05

So it's just the colours you don't like? Everyone else wears muted colours?

Surely it's a good thing we have moved on from such formality?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 20/10/2023 18:10

Please post a picture of a "professional" hoodie. I have never seen a professional hoodie and don't believe they exist.

When did you see a careers councillor the 50's?
Colour is great. More people should embrace it.

Chickychoccyegg · 20/10/2023 18:12

Lol , nothing unprofessional about being Kenough , those hoodie are great, I might get one when I get paid

ItsRebekahVardy · 20/10/2023 18:13

Like this. So fab.

FuckingHellAdele · 20/10/2023 18:13

There is no dress code.

Which means, no dress code😐I'm struggling to see the issue- I work for one of the biggest companies in the world, we dropped business wear about 12 years ago.

ItsRebekahVardy · 20/10/2023 18:14

Professional hoodie

Beezknees · 20/10/2023 18:15

Oh you'd hate my work. We can wear whatever we want. People come in gym wear, tracksuits, leggings. One of my colleagues has tattoos on his face too.

Blinkityblonk · 20/10/2023 18:16

I am finding it hard to believe that you work in tech, and have never seen another tech person dressed in a logo, that's very funny!

Same here
but I'm 47

times have changed, thank goodness.

Jewelspun · 20/10/2023 18:17

It sounds grim to me but if there is no dress code, I can't see there being any problem what people wear as long as the clothing isn't exposing bum cracks, bum cleavage and doesn't impede on their doing their job.

No dress code is in my opinion a recipe for unprofessional behaviour as a many people will take the opportunity to dress like slobs.

However, having a negative opinion about what people wear when there is no dress code is pointless.

But you don't work somewhere with a professional dress code?

Mine is no pyjamas, no offensive slogans, cover all relevant body parts and clean.
thats it.

herewegoagaiin · 20/10/2023 18:17

If you are for real, you'd have a fit if you saw us in our (similar industry) office.

Blinkityblonk · 20/10/2023 18:18

Ok, you don't work in tech, but I still can't believe no logos is the thing, unless that's in the dress code...
