To think rainbow hoodies are unprofessional?

I work in an office that doesn't have a dress code (tech field so very casual environment). Most people wear a mix of jeans and plain t-shirts, polos, hoodies with the company logo on it, sweaters etc. All in fairly neutral colours.

We recently had a new transfer to my department. She seems nice, very carefree, and she's good at her job. Today though, she came in with a bright rainbow, tie-dyed hoodie from a popular movie. It's not subtle at all and the quote from the movie is clearly printed on the front. It really stands out! Yes, I will mind my own business and not say a word but AIBU to think this is just really unprofessional?

What? It has nothing to do with LGBT? It's that it's merch from a movie and in bright colours. When I was in school, I remember having a chat with the careers counsellor and was told that professional colours are usually muted and that navy/grey/beige/cream and solid dark/pastel colours are the way to go. Maybe things have changed since then.

🙈🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I prefer smart casual, but maybe that’s me just being a bit old fashioned. If it’s customer facing, more so. I just feel more confident that people know what they’re doing when they take care of their appearance. Otherwise I think when a bit thrown together and messy that their service might also be thrown together and messy.

Your title suggest that the rainbowness of the Hoody is the issue, not the slogan. What exactly is it that you object to OP?

Daffodilwoman · 20/10/2023 22:04

Can someone tell me what the slogan is?
Op- yabu. There isn’t a dress code.

BashfulClam · 20/10/2023 22:05

Ha ha careers advisors were absolute jokes in my day. They couldn’t give me any advice, I went and found my uni course and subsequent career despite them telling me my course didn’t exist 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wear colour at work, this week at a conference I wore a red dress, not black, navy or any other dull as fuck colour. I wore a nice smart purple top today and no one died!

Isometimeswonder · 20/10/2023 22:10

She sounds more interesting than you, tbh

ManchesterLu · 20/10/2023 22:12

There's no dress code so that means people can wear what they want. End of story.

NahNahKissHimGoodbye · 20/10/2023 22:17

Loving all the Ken GIFS.

I can see it might be considered too informal for some workplaces but I'm a tech department with a casual vibe and no official dress code I'm not seeing the issue.

If it was being used to make a statement about sexuality (and it doesn't seem like it is) then I could understand the issue (nobody cares what your preferences are at work, the workplace isn't a place where that should even be a thing.

It is in fact wholly possible times have changed since you were in school, yes.

Daisyblue77 · 20/10/2023 22:21

This is ridiculous

TeenLifeMum · 20/10/2023 22:25

You’re shocked by a tie dye hoodie? Are you related to Mary Whitehouse? This is such an odd thing to be shocked by in an office that’s casual with no dress code and hoodies are fine.

FrancisSeaton · 20/10/2023 22:28

Honestly this thread has made me laugh more than I knew possible.
Even I'm not shocked by a tie dye hoody and I'm a health visitor FFS 😂😂😂

NahNahKissHimGoodbye · 20/10/2023 22:31

@FullyAwareIMightBU but why would it being merch from a movie be a problem in a workplace?

MummyDummyNow · 20/10/2023 22:40

I have never in my life heard of "professional colours" for the workplace. And yes I have worked in some very formal corporate companies!

YABU.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/10/2023 22:49

Are you the same poster who wants builders to sit on newspaper when they go to the pub in case they get dirt on the seats?

Seriously? Only on MN!

NahNahKissHimGoodbye · 20/10/2023 22:51

That is, I meant to say only on here would someone post something that ridiculous!

BarelyCoping123 · 20/10/2023 22:56

"Rainbow hoodie"
This is seriously what you're upset about OP?
Jesus wept

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 20/10/2023 23:03

There’s no dress code. Have a word with yourself.

MysteryBelle · 20/10/2023 23:06

Sounds like an unspoken dress code where everyone adheres to casual but professional dress. So yes, it is unprofessional to wear something you’d normally slouch around in at home.

NahNahKissHimGoodbye · 20/10/2023 23:31

Back in the 90s strict dress codes were a thing in some offices, so to be fair I can absolutely see a careers counsellor saying this to an Xennial /milennial/Gen X student but the type of person I imagine wearing a rainbow hoody would be a younger person. Of course I'm generalizing here something awful!

I mean yeah probs... How long ago were you in school op?!

FullyAwareIMightBU · 20/10/2023 17:48

Fully aware I'm probably BU btw just a shock from what I'm used to when it comes to dressing!

Find a new field then. You’re in a field known for being casual in terms of dress.
