To think rainbow hoodies are unprofessional?

I work in an office that doesn't have a dress code (tech field so very casual environment). Most people wear a mix of jeans and plain t-shirts, polos, hoodies with the company logo on it, sweaters etc. All in fairly neutral colours.

We recently had a new transfer to my department. She seems nice, very carefree, and she's good at her job. Today though, she came in with a bright rainbow, tie-dyed hoodie from a popular movie. It's not subtle at all and the quote from the movie is clearly printed on the front. It really stands out! Yes, I will mind my own business and not say a word but AIBU to think this is just really unprofessional?

My old company did a dress down day/s when we had some v hot weather

It then turned into a regular thing and continued for months

In the end they had to send an email as people were coming in looking ridiculous. Senior people in full tracksuits, caps and air max

What? It has nothing to do with LGBT? It's that it's merch from a movie and in bright colours. When I was in school, I remember having a chat with the careers counsellor and was told that professional colours are usually muted and that navy/grey/beige/cream and solid dark/pastel colours are the way to go. Maybe things have changed since then.

Speaking as a careers adviser who wore a neon pink jumper to work today ..... yes you are unreasonable and times have changed.

MrsRetriever · 20/10/2023 19:06

Same here, @GodDammitCecil - I wore bright red slim-fit trousers to the office one day this week & I’m now worried I might get my P45 soon.

oh wait, no, I’m good at my job despite the bright colour

AlexaCanYouHearMe · 20/10/2023 19:07

Are you a bit jell that she is bold and extrovert @FullyAwareIMightBU Grin

You are also Kenough, @FullyAwareIMightBU

I work for a government agency. In the office today are a couple of suits, a hundred or so t-shirts, a few hoodies, and even two pairs of shorts. Nobody is considered unprofessional.

ActDottie · 20/10/2023 19:14

Lol you sound a bit up tight.

Theres no dress code! I work in a corporate finance job for a large bank and if someone wore a rainbow hoodie in the office I wouldn’t think anything of it.

StasisMom · 20/10/2023 19:14

With you OP, I'd rather she be less good at her job but wearing muted tones of grey.

😂 😂 😂 yea things have moved on since you were at school

I hope she sees this thread! Not beyond the realms of possibility.

Blimey. How long is it since you left school OP? Our 1980s careers counsellors were notoriously a waste of space so I can't imagine taking any advice of theirs seriously (if in fact I could remember any of it now).

Anyway, I suppose the key word here is 'usually'...

Meowandthen · 20/10/2023 19:21

Do you not like colour? Sounds like a more cheerful version of the rest of you are you aren’t customer facing.

Lighten up. It’s just clothes.

IDoughnutKnow · 20/10/2023 19:22

I think it sounds awful, personally. I would find it very hard to take any adult seriously who wore a rainbow hoodie with a slogan from a rather rubbishy film on it at work.

I am. Unlike people who feel the need to wear clothes which advertise their "fun personalities", who are largely a PITA.

Judgmental too.

Lookingatthesunset · 20/10/2023 19:30

She's good at her job, you say.

The hoodie doesn't matter!

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 20/10/2023 19:30

There’s no dress code, her jumper doesn’t affect you at all, unless it was offensive in a way you didn’t mention.

basically, mind your own business you’re being unreasonable and very judgmental.

Unclench.

Rudderneck · 20/10/2023 19:34

I don't think offices without dress codes really exist. They are just offices without formalized dress codes. There is always a box.

I would say that a rainbow coloured tie-dye hoodie is slightly more casual than fairly neutral coloured one, and a branded pop-culture item is going to be more casual, and more personal, than a plain or very generic or company branded one.

Is it too casual? That really depends on what the owners think, and maybe what the clients think. The downside of "no dress code' is that people have to guess and sometimes step outside the box, and then feel embarrassed if someone tells them they should have known where the box was.

yeah god knows why I got a payrise this week when I had the temerity to wear a bright pink cardigan to work

IDoughnutKnow · 20/10/2023 19:36

Meowandthen · 20/10/2023 19:28

Judgmental too.

That's me.

There's no need for anyone to trot out the "unclench' trope, though. Thinking that people do themselves a favour by looking at least a bit professional for work is not entirely unreasonable.

Bunnyannesummers · 20/10/2023 19:36

Our official hoodies for events are rainbow and they’re PART of the dress code!!

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 20/10/2023 19:36

I bet it didn't say something silly on the front of it, though.
