To think it’s turning into genocide in real time

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 13/10/2023 09:19

Just seen this on the news- how can this be right? It genuinely is starting to feel like genocide.

What Hamas did was beyond appalling. But this is also beyond appalling too. Its trying to wipe Gaza off the map. Over 500 kids have already died. Human rights watch have verified that Israel uses white phosphorus against Gaza, which is a war crime.

And everyone is just watching it happen.

“The Israeli army has just ordered the entire civilian population of Gaza to evacuate south within 24 hours. The UN says that amounts to 1.1 million people& applies to 100s of 1000s sheltered in UN buildings & their staff. This is impossible without “devastating human consequences”
Leaving aside the international law implications, I cannot emphasise enough how impossible this kind of movement of people would be. I have spent a lot of time in Gaza it is one of the most densely populated places on earth, there are pretty much only 2 roads south - along the coast and down the centre - they aren’t wide or well paved. I spoke to the gaza health ministry yesterday who said every hospital was overflowing. How would the wounded and elderly be transported? There is a massive fuel shortage how would vehicles drive? There would be no where for 1.1 million to go even if they got there. Rafah crossing to Egypt is not operational because of Israeli airstrikes.”

This is how Genocide is classified;
U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide:

"In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

  • Killing members of the group;
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"

The actions of both Israel & Hamas fit this description too. It’s just fucking beyond terrible. And it feels like some world leaders are just cheering from the sidelines 😪

The west will always support Israel and nothing will ever change that

I don't think that's true. Have you seen the figures for support for Israel by generation in the US?

1dayatatime · 18/10/2023 17:43

@PaxOmnibus

Guessing it will be extremely difficult to prove who did it with each blaming the other.

There needs to be some completely unbiased independent reporting on the situation.

Exactly which is why I think the UN will conclude that they cannot definitely say who is responsible.

I agree unbiased independent reporting is desperately needed, unfortunately both sides will decry such reporting as biased if it ever reported something not in their favour.

The tape alleging to be Hamas fighters talking about the bombing of the hospital is fake.

Why does Israel continue to put out fake videos and audio recordings in an attempt to blame Palestinian groups? It's almost as though they have something to hide. Very strange 🤔

Maybe it is fake maybe it's not fake.

On what factual evidence are you convinced it's fake?

It's my understanding that "the YouTuber" works for the Israeli government in what he calls "digital warfare".

US vetos UN resolution which would have pushed for humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The UK abstained, Barbara Woodward (or whoever directed her vote) should be ashamed.

Two experts have said that to Channel 4 news and anyone familiar with the dialects have said the language, accents and dialect are all wrong.

Also, interesting how Israel bombed the hospital at the weekend, then called the hospital warning them to evacuate on Sunday but they definitely had nothing to do with the bomb last night. That's just not credible.

They admitted it at the time, realised the enormity of the loss of life and started scrambling around for ways to blame Palestine. Classic Israel.

In the past events have been investigated and the culprits ultimately admitting it was them.
But the process is a long one so not going to help the current situation.
By the time the truth comes out the situation has moved on, although I doubt anyone will forget the attack on a hospital any time soon.

We will have to wait and see and personally I will not pass judgement.

Firstly thank you, I try to do my best in relentlessly pointing out deliberate misinformation whenever I see it backed by factual evidence with links.

Some of my work includes :
Pointing out that the use of white phosphorus in 155mm M825 smoke screen artillery is a legitimate military use and not a war crime.
That cutting off power to Gaza for the purpose of degrading Hamas military capability is not a war crime even if this results in civilian hardship.

Opinions based on conviction rather than facts and evidence simply harden opinions and make any peaceful solution to this crisis even harder to reach.

Of course if I have posted anything that is factually incorrect then I would absolutely welcome counter factual evidence.

Under international law (ICC) the crime that Israel is guilty of is the crime of starvation:

Article 8(2)(b)(xxv) criminalises:
‘Intentionally using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare by depriving them of objects indispensable to their survival, including wilfully impeding relief supplies as provided for under the Geneva Conventions’.

This has been widely discussed in the news, including on the BBC where they brought on a KC human rights barrister.

1dayatatime · 18/10/2023 19:59

I would argue that the stopping of food and water is indeed a war crime as it is very difficult to claim the primary intention of this is to degrade Hamas military ability.

Interestingly the naval blockade of Germany during WW1 that led to starvation in Germany would technically be a war crime today except the UN didn't exist back then plus the allies won so they got to decide what was and was not a war crime.

The cutting of power and fuel however could be more easily argued on the grounds of degrading Hamas military capability which would not make it a war crime even if this impacted innocent civilians.

Two experts have said that to Channel 4 news

They were described as 'independent Arab journalists' [but not identified].
Overall, the Channel 4 report still didn't conclude who was to blame.

Lonelycrab · 18/10/2023 20:10

I think it's a very informative report.

Edited for accuracy.

Dispairrepair · 18/10/2023 20:26

Finding out who was responsible takes lots of different areas of information.

They can track the light from ry the rocket, look at lots it footage. They look at the debris site etc and i think hammas knew it fucked up which is why it went put to whip up hysteria before proper checking of facts.

Toothyfruity · 18/10/2023 20:30

Either way they'll have murdered another 500 in the next day or two. Disgusting.

Toothyfruity · 18/10/2023 22:04

The videos coming out of Gaza are unbelievably distressing. I can't cope with the murders of civilians, day after day. Videos of injured and killed toddlers and children it's just so sick.

And people justifying it and world leaders cheerleading massacre after massacre. It's so fucked up. I'm despairing. I wish they would just stop the bombing for God's sake.

Finlesswonder · 18/10/2023 23:18

You think the Israelis, being from right next door, would fake a call using the wrong dialect?

I texted my friend who is a native Arabic speaker on this point and she said that “you can tell that the Arabic being spoken is by someone who isn’t a native Arabic speaker, so to anyone who is a native Arabic speaker, it sounds so bad you’d think it was satirical.”

A pretty damning summary of the “evidence.” She said this when it first came out and Arabic speakers online seem to now be saying similar.

I honestly think hm the Israeli government don’t care to make it convincing, because the people who don’t believe them are just further convinced that they’re lying (which doesn’t bother them), but the people who support them will be happy to accept the evidence as true, no matter what Arabic speakers say. They’re only releasing it for the benefit of relations with their existing support base.

I would like to add that this is of course my own opinion based on what my friend told me, and of what I’ve seen of how the Israeli government operate.

Do you have something to say?

Efacsen · 19/10/2023 09:02

So Bidens visit has resulted in 20 huge trucks of aid being readied by UN/Egypt to be taken into Gaza. Bomb damaged road needs fixing first - so not before tomorrow at the earliest

If Hamas gets their hands on any, then aid stops

No fuel is included in the aid - maybe because there's no accompanying ceasefire?

No mention of US passport holders

No mention of the hostages

Pre the war 100 UN lorries/day were going into Gaza so a modest but welcome start if it happens

Efacsen · 19/10/2023 09:31

Egyptian spokesman says foreign national passport holders will be be free to leave if the border opens

Efacsen · 19/10/2023 10:05

Specialist road-mending equipment has been seen moving into Gaza

Such brave brave people doing this
