To think it’s turning into genocide in real time

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 13/10/2023 09:19

Just seen this on the news- how can this be right? It genuinely is starting to feel like genocide.

What Hamas did was beyond appalling. But this is also beyond appalling too. Its trying to wipe Gaza off the map. Over 500 kids have already died. Human rights watch have verified that Israel uses white phosphorus against Gaza, which is a war crime.

And everyone is just watching it happen.

“The Israeli army has just ordered the entire civilian population of Gaza to evacuate south within 24 hours. The UN says that amounts to 1.1 million people& applies to 100s of 1000s sheltered in UN buildings & their staff. This is impossible without “devastating human consequences”
Leaving aside the international law implications, I cannot emphasise enough how impossible this kind of movement of people would be. I have spent a lot of time in Gaza it is one of the most densely populated places on earth, there are pretty much only 2 roads south - along the coast and down the centre - they aren’t wide or well paved. I spoke to the gaza health ministry yesterday who said every hospital was overflowing. How would the wounded and elderly be transported? There is a massive fuel shortage how would vehicles drive? There would be no where for 1.1 million to go even if they got there. Rafah crossing to Egypt is not operational because of Israeli airstrikes.”

This is how Genocide is classified;
U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide:

"In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

  • Killing members of the group;
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"

The actions of both Israel & Hamas fit this description too. It’s just fucking beyond terrible. And it feels like some world leaders are just cheering from the sidelines 😪

Hmm. Israel has ordered the evacuation of hospitals in order to bomb them and now they've bombed several. What a shocker. They admitted this initially and then deleted the tweets. Then they provided video footage which it turns out was from a different time to the airstrike and deleted that. They're scrambling to deflect blame for this, presumably because even they realise that bombing a hospital that was shielding hundreds of people made homeless by their previous bombs is a step too far for the west to stomach. By the time it's categorically proven that they did it it will be old news.

Israel often blames their bombs murdering civilians on Hamas. This is not new.

SomeCatFromJapan · 18/10/2023 09:44

I find it quite telling that so many people last night were willing to believe actual terrorist organisations over Israel.

OhHelloTheres · 18/10/2023 09:44

@EmmaGrundyForPM
In 2011 Hamas released an Israeli hostage in exchange for 1027 criminals. That was considered reasonable and proportional. So there are currently 199 hostages, which I guess means Israel is entitled to punish over 200000 Palestinians? Instead, they're just asking for them back. Let's be clear, a lot of the hostages will be dead. They're even keeping corpses hostage. It's really, truly insane.

Give the hostages back so the water can be turned back on and save everyone. It's not rocket science.

The tweet was made by a youtuber, he'd have no more inside knowledge than anyone else.

It seems you are a bit behind. As for my ‘lies’ here you go.

Guardian reported yesterday that Hamas offered the hostages in exchange for them to stop bombing Gaza. Why wouldn’t they accept that? Hmmm

A few days ago I read a piece by ?Peter Beaumont in the Guardian - he's been their ME editor for nearly a quarter of a century

He was reflecting on the Hamas atrocities in that context - he had some very sad things to say about the issues of security and safety - in particular he said the Israeli intelligence services knew that something like that was coming. How awful to live like that whilst still trying to foster a stable secure life

But i guess the other side of that is that the Israeli military/government were able to plan their response in advance including the desired final outcome

What looks like a sadistic cock-up to outsiders is just the plan being put into action and there's an [unknown to us] a factored in number of fatalities - it seems so mechanistic and well ordered tho' in it's brutality

IveHadItUpToHere · 18/10/2023 09:47

It's not impossible to verify what happened. Israel and Hamas may like to pretend it's impossible and that we're in a post-truth society. But we're not.
In every conflict there are people on the ground - international aid workers who are based in-country; international volunteers; international medical staff, visitors, relatives, etc. The UN has staff in-country. MSF have staff in-country. And what that usually means is they have security and ex-military staff with them. This isn't a case of uneducated and traumatised civilians who don't know what is going on. Professionals accustomed to working in disasters and conflicts are there and will know exactly what happened.
It's also worth remembering that in Rwanda and Darfur - all the allied governments knew exactly what was happening on the ground; and who was doing what where. They didn't even share that information with their own military. They also ignored the evidence provided to them by aid agencies (even though they already knew their evidence was accurate).
Governments may be circumspect when they want to support a genocide. But there are always independent, professional witnesses and their testimony will be heard regardless of how many idiots post propaganda on X/Twitter or MN.

The Islamic militants misfired a rocket which destroyed the hospital and killed hundreds of their own people.

Israel don't need to deflect anything as there is proof and people are backtracking all over the place. Keep up and stop clinging to misinformation.

OhHelloTheres · 18/10/2023 09:52

Oh bore off @Green777 . You can't just make shit up and then claim it to be true. When have I ever said the Palestinians deserve it?!

These are the kind of idiots Israel is constantly dealing with, people who will make literally whatever claims they want without any need to back them up. You are believing your own lies, which is honestly mindboggling.

Or maybe you struggle with comprehension? I have never said Palestinians deserve it and nor do I think so. Even when they were celebrating the massacre of October 7th, I just felt sorry for them that they think that's something to celebrate. That they're so brainwashed by their Hamas oppressors that they'll believe anything.

Palestinians deserve better than Hamas.

@Toothyfruity

"What proof?"

+++

Well Israel has released some radar images showing the launch of rockets from Gaza to Israel that crossed the site of the hospital- which of course they could have easily made up.

They have also released some drone footage showing that the hospital explosion occurred in the car park and their was no crater which would indicate a missile attack rather than a malfunction on a PIJ missile - which again is probably too technical for most to understand and could be argued either way.

Of course PIJ or Hamas could provide fragments of an Israeli missile but this could be dismissed by the Israelis as simply planted there from an unrelated missile attack.

The only country with the capability of providing third party intelligence on the explosion at the would be the USA but anything they produced would not be seen as "independent".

In short it is incredibly difficult to "prove" who did it but in any event it is pointless as people will believe what they want to believe anyway.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 18/10/2023 10:10

sandrabopi spot on. 👏

Add to this the brutal reality that the complacent Israeli intelligence failed the Israeli people. It's much more complex than that, of course. But this is certainly a factor.

Ah but the counter argument to this is that given the UK government is supporting Israel then of course the BBC would say this wouldn't they.

I'm not sure I find Hamas all that reliable either tbf.

I'm not saying I know for sure what happened because how can I - I just think that a lot of what was being posted last night was hugely imflammatory and irresponsible given the lack of facts, and the few posters that dared point that out were actually abused and threatened.

I see here that the hospital was previously attacked by an Israeli airstrike a few days ago. I'm not clear from the article if it was last Monday or Saturday.

Not looking good for Israel on this one. Also the fact that they've bombed several other hospitals in the last week or so.

I completely agree. It was a cess pit, as was Twitter.
