To think it’s turning into genocide in real time

Just seen this on the news- how can this be right? It genuinely is starting to feel like genocide.

What Hamas did was beyond appalling. But this is also beyond appalling too. Its trying to wipe Gaza off the map. Over 500 kids have already died. Human rights watch have verified that Israel uses white phosphorus against Gaza, which is a war crime.

And everyone is just watching it happen.

“The Israeli army has just ordered the entire civilian population of Gaza to evacuate south within 24 hours. The UN says that amounts to 1.1 million people& applies to 100s of 1000s sheltered in UN buildings & their staff. This is impossible without “devastating human consequences”
Leaving aside the international law implications, I cannot emphasise enough how impossible this kind of movement of people would be. I have spent a lot of time in Gaza it is one of the most densely populated places on earth, there are pretty much only 2 roads south - along the coast and down the centre - they aren’t wide or well paved. I spoke to the gaza health ministry yesterday who said every hospital was overflowing. How would the wounded and elderly be transported? There is a massive fuel shortage how would vehicles drive? There would be no where for 1.1 million to go even if they got there. Rafah crossing to Egypt is not operational because of Israeli airstrikes.”

This is how Genocide is classified;
U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide:

"In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

  • Killing members of the group;
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"

The actions of both Israel & Hamas fit this description too. It’s just fucking beyond terrible. And it feels like some world leaders are just cheering from the sidelines 😪

Can I suggest to all the people saying these threads are pointless and should be pulled - that you just leave the threads to the people who want to discuss this? It's a huge news story and a humanitarian tragedy. We should have a right to discuss it.

What and allow the misinformation and half stories on both sides to go unchallenged?

1dayatatime · 18/10/2023 08:53

@NotTerfNorCis

Also there is no discussion just preaching that only serves to harden people's convictions and make any peaceful solution that much harder to reach.

OhHelloTheres · 18/10/2023 09:01

Israel is providing proof. Visual and audio. People are actively choosing to believe terrorists over them. That's what the world has come to - they hate Israel so much they'd rather believe and support terrorists. Terrorists who still hold 199 hostages, a lot of them very young children. It's all sorts of messed up.

Efacsen · 18/10/2023 09:03

Joe Biden has just arrived in Tel Aviv

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 18/10/2023 09:03

It this point it doesn’t really matter anymore who did it, it’s who people believe it was.

Yeah the hostages and the lack of humanitarian aid just seem to slip away out of sight

Unless it's as some kind of bargaining chip

Agree it just confirms prejudices and biases in both camps which will become entrenched whatever the evidence

And add to the huge pile of all the other grievances

Likely fertile ground for a few conspiracy theories down the line too

Sad

Exactly and neither side will change their convictions regardless of the information or evidence provided.

Israel is withholding water from a population that happen to live in the Gaza Strip. Water.

Israel has shut off their WATER.

Israel is stopping food from entering Palestine.

Israel is stopping vital medical aid from entering while simultaneously bombing civilians.

Hundreds and thousands are in search of bread and water.

This is pure pure evil.

IveHadItUpToHere · 18/10/2023 09:22

I don't think these threads are pointless. There are verifiable, independent sources of information on the conflict. As I've posted before, I do think MN should ban (not just delete their posts but permanently ban) any posters endorsing war crimes and the breaching of international law.
Often those posters are using deliberate misinformation and disinformation to try to justify their positions. Their positions aren't justifiable. They are indefensible.
And even if some world leaders think they can endorse ignoring international law with no repercussions, they're wrong. Publishers and forums should be held to the same standard imo.

Green777 · 18/10/2023 09:23

Israel has openly revealed it will use this opportunity to make the Gaza ‘smaller’ than it already was becoming.

SomeCatFromJapan · 18/10/2023 09:24

I read the now-deleted threads last night after the hospital strike, and what struck me was how there was no whataboutery and no attempt to provide "context", as poster after poster insisted on doing after the October 7 terrorist attacks.

Those posters seem to be a lot quieter this morning.

There must be 100s of thousands of lives hanging by a thread today

I dearly hope that this brinksmanship doesn't end in Gaza becoming a huge graveyard of the Palestinian people

Never again But here we are

Correct and the OP plus others in this thread are prime examples of people who ran straightaway with what Hamas claimed under a respectable sounding name!

Attached is a fair comment. Media was grossly irresponsible last night.

OhHelloTheres · 18/10/2023 09:26

@Green777
All Hamas have to do to have water return is free the 199 hostages. Is it really that big of an ask?! Why won't they just let them go?

And stop lying. Israel is not openly saying it wants to make Gaza smaller. Now, inevitably, you'll send a screenshot of an Israeli saying just that. That doesn't make it Israel policy though.

@OhHelloTheres

Your argument falls into the typical ‘they deserve it’.

So because Hamas don’t give a shit about their people, not only that but they also on top of that deserve to have their water and food cut off from Israel.

Gotcha.

This ‘subtle’ they deserve it, because Hamas are evil, is getting very old. You are condoning war crimes.

Why is every Pro Israel poster deflecting what ISRAEL is now committing with Hamas?

Hamas got us into this mess because they’re bloodthirsty terrorists.

Israel is supposed to abide by the rule of law and be a democratic government. There is no excuse and nothing to excuse what they’re doing.

DownNative · 18/10/2023 09:37

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 18/10/2023 05:08

@DownNative so you are alllowed to give us your version of what’s going on but I also posted opposing information & that’s considered spewing out circular reasoning. Right. Got it.

The facts about what happened at the hospital will no doubt come out over the next 24 hours but what is not remotely in doubt is that thousands have died in Gaza and will continue to die.

On the contrary, YOU willingly, qyickly, rashly and deliberately ran straight away with the claims from the Gaza Health Ministry aka Hamas.

You have consistently spread disinformation throughout and been challenged each time with various pieces of evidence.

You did resort to circular reasoning when pointed out to you that Palestinian Islamic Jihad was being blamed for last night. Your childish retort was "IDF would say that!" yet you'd been running with Hamas' own claims. 🤦‍♂️

That is the definition of circular reasoning.

You could easily have taken another option - that of admitting the situation is unclear, but you chose not to.

Like I said, your thread can easily be pulled like the others once it degenerates into this kind of flawed logic.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/10/2023 09:37

We don't know whether the IDF deliberately bombed the hospital or if it was a misfires rocket from within Gaza.

We do know that Israel has shut off the water supply to Gaza. That is inhumane. Yes of course Hammas should release the hostages, but for Israel to effectively kill hundreds of thousands of Palestinians is a war crime.

OhHelloTheres · 18/10/2023 09:39

@sandrabopi
Various Palestinian terrorist organisations have plenty of experience in lying to the world by the means of highly effective propaganda. One of the most obvious ones was the supposed massacre in Jenin. Thousands dead ended up being something like 50. Don't get me wrong, if those 50 were innocent civilians it's still an awful thing to have happened, but it's nothing compared to what the whole world was claiming it was.

What I'm saying is, Palestinian terrorists have form. Also, no one expects them to prove it wasn't them who attacked the hospital yet Israel is (rightfully) expected to prove it wasn't them but then no one believes them. Hamas and their friends can do literally whatever they want as they have people like you willing to believe absolutely anything. Insanity!

If there was verified proof Israel bombed the hospital, I would believe it and condemn it. If there's verified proof it wasn't them, people will still believe whatever they want. It really shows your unwavering bias

You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. So, no, threads won't be left to become an echo chamber which is what you're advocating for. 🤷‍♂️

Last night was claim by Hamas, counter-claim by Israel Defense Force and counter counter-claim with accusation by Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Not verified facts.
