To think it’s turning into genocide in real time

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 13/10/2023 09:19

Just seen this on the news- how can this be right? It genuinely is starting to feel like genocide.

What Hamas did was beyond appalling. But this is also beyond appalling too. Its trying to wipe Gaza off the map. Over 500 kids have already died. Human rights watch have verified that Israel uses white phosphorus against Gaza, which is a war crime.

And everyone is just watching it happen.

“The Israeli army has just ordered the entire civilian population of Gaza to evacuate south within 24 hours. The UN says that amounts to 1.1 million people& applies to 100s of 1000s sheltered in UN buildings & their staff. This is impossible without “devastating human consequences”
Leaving aside the international law implications, I cannot emphasise enough how impossible this kind of movement of people would be. I have spent a lot of time in Gaza it is one of the most densely populated places on earth, there are pretty much only 2 roads south - along the coast and down the centre - they aren’t wide or well paved. I spoke to the gaza health ministry yesterday who said every hospital was overflowing. How would the wounded and elderly be transported? There is a massive fuel shortage how would vehicles drive? There would be no where for 1.1 million to go even if they got there. Rafah crossing to Egypt is not operational because of Israeli airstrikes.”

This is how Genocide is classified;
U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide:

"In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

  • Killing members of the group;
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"

The actions of both Israel & Hamas fit this description too. It’s just fucking beyond terrible. And it feels like some world leaders are just cheering from the sidelines 😪

They have been told to go south, Hamas could be helping them to move instead of telling them to stay in their homes. They want them to die there, they want the propaganda victory. They want those civilians to blend in with during a ground invasion.

Egypt is working on aid going across the border, they could be a hell of a lot closer to that aid but they won’t be is they listen to bloody hamas and stay.

Given that Hamas won't help them, does that really justify their being killed? Why give them the propaganda victory?

MrsMara · 13/10/2023 18:55

Noicant · 13/10/2023 18:47

I am not being disingenuous, I’m saying if Egypt won’t open it’s border and Hamas don’t care if you die then you take whatever option is available. I absolutely believe the IDF is planning to eradicate Hamas, I also believe they are no longer fussed about civilian casualties but if there is a chance for civilians that chance should be taken.

There is nowhere for them to go. I know this, I think you do too.

IDF doesn't care neither does Hamas. Egypt won't open a safe passage and even if they did, there is no time. Israel's tokenism is just that. They will bomb Gaza regardless. The dumping of flyers is purely for us onlookers. It makes the Israel flag flying supporters feel better.

maddening · 13/10/2023 18:58

Imagine the whole of England being told to leave because of acts by the bnp!

To quote @MrsMara

It is upsetting that you are so disingenuous to imagine that can happen.

I'm Irish, it's almost like if the UK decided to bomb the fuck out of us because of the IRA but told civilians we had 24 hours to get to safety.......even though there's nowhere to go because we're surrounded by water 🙄

They can't get out which is why they're staying!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/10/2023 19:05

There isn't many demos from the pro Palestine crowd around Hamas being in power though.

But anyway..

If Israel had looked to international law for its response, the focus would have remained firmly on Hamas' actions.
Most people in Israel are unhappy with Netanyahu's plan to raze Gaza to the ground. Mothers from Gaza and Israel marched together for peace. They can see that ordinary civilians in both areas are suffering and will continue to pay the price for the rhetoric being spouted by terrorists and leaders ... and, to be blunt, by idiots in the West on social media who have obviously never set foot in either place; never been in refugee camps, never been in war zones and who see this as their 'cause' for the week.
Never confuse an extremely unpopular leader's actions with the desires of the population he is supposed to represent. Telling people to leave Gaza whilst making it impossible for them to do so, is not condoned by most Israelis. The majority of Palestinians and Israelis want to live in peace.

Beyondshock · 13/10/2023 19:15

There are now reports coming out that the Palestines that tried to flee to wherever Israel told them to go were bombed. This is beyond insanity.

Efacsen · 13/10/2023 19:15

MSF reporting that they have been given 2 HOURS to evacuate from main hospital in Gaza City

This is more complete madness

The most sensible, thoughtful post I have read all week. X

They have told people to move south not leave Gaza. They are clearly focusing on north gaza. I don’t understand what the alternative is? Just stay in your apartment in north gaza?

I saw that tweet Sad

EsmaCannonball · 13/10/2023 19:51

Hamas has ordered Gazan citizens to stay in place. They need the optics of civilians dying. Despicable.

It's just been reported in the Guardian

Initial reports hour or so were from Hamas

NBC reporters have been able to corroborate it

Beyondshock · 13/10/2023 19:54

So do you think hamas was right to tell their people to stay put? They listened to Israel and they were killed trying to flee!!

Noicant · 13/10/2023 19:58

Yup just saw that, I think Israel at this point are trying to clear northern gaza for a ground invasion but will blow up anything anywhere near a Hamas member. Unfortunately theres 40’000 of them. It’s shit, utterly shit but if people can they need to go.

Firebug007 · 13/10/2023 19:59

Panaa · 13/10/2023 18:28

I'd quibble with the notion that the IDF are giving the people a genuine chance to get out.

Hama's are telling them to stay because they know if people do they'll be more international pressure on Israel not to attack.

Lonelycrab · 13/10/2023 20:02

Fucking popcorn

The world is watching

Noicant · 13/10/2023 20:03

Beyondshock · 13/10/2023 19:54

So do you think hamas was right to tell their people to stay put? They listened to Israel and they were killed trying to flee!!

I think if you are unlucky enough to be anywhere near a hamas member or operation you are at risk. I think IDF is trying to thin out the number of people in norther gaza for the ground invasion but they are not going to hold back if civillians are present. This isn’t about whether I think its right or wrong (I think it’s clearly wrong) it’s about as many people not dying as possible given that Hamas and Israel are now at war.

Beyondshock · 13/10/2023 20:06

At this point, anyone that supports Israel is either being paid or utterly deranged.

Efacsen · 13/10/2023 20:07

Agree - stay and die of dehydration/get blown up with Hamas
or
leave and have a chance of survival

Bleak and terrifying choice
