To think it’s turning into genocide in real time

1000 replies

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 13/10/2023 09:19

Just seen this on the news- how can this be right? It genuinely is starting to feel like genocide.

What Hamas did was beyond appalling. But this is also beyond appalling too. Its trying to wipe Gaza off the map. Over 500 kids have already died. Human rights watch have verified that Israel uses white phosphorus against Gaza, which is a war crime.

And everyone is just watching it happen.

“The Israeli army has just ordered the entire civilian population of Gaza to evacuate south within 24 hours. The UN says that amounts to 1.1 million people& applies to 100s of 1000s sheltered in UN buildings & their staff. This is impossible without “devastating human consequences”
Leaving aside the international law implications, I cannot emphasise enough how impossible this kind of movement of people would be. I have spent a lot of time in Gaza it is one of the most densely populated places on earth, there are pretty much only 2 roads south - along the coast and down the centre - they aren’t wide or well paved. I spoke to the gaza health ministry yesterday who said every hospital was overflowing. How would the wounded and elderly be transported? There is a massive fuel shortage how would vehicles drive? There would be no where for 1.1 million to go even if they got there. Rafah crossing to Egypt is not operational because of Israeli airstrikes.”

This is how Genocide is classified;
U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide:

"In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

  • Killing members of the group;
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"

The actions of both Israel & Hamas fit this description too. It’s just fucking beyond terrible. And it feels like some world leaders are just cheering from the sidelines 😪

No need to state the obvious. In all legitimate military actions innocent men, women and children are killed.

Such is the nature of wars. It only stops when people are sick of the slaughter.

There can be an argument whether Israeli bombing of Gaza is a legitimate military action.
Has UN declared it not legitimate?

Does Israel care about legality? Does anyone care about what UN says these days. For what it is worth UN human rights chief has called the siege illegal - will it make Israel stop doing it till it has US and UK supporting it?

For that matter UN even declared the settlements illegal with a proper vote. Did it matter to Israel or stop the settlements?

UN General assembly also accorded Palestine a non- member observer state status. Did it matter to Israel?

So please don't start referencing UN now when it doesn't make an iota of a difference to Israel. Or at least do it when Israel abides by UN's declarations or resolutions.

Watching Al Jazera now, thousands are leaving northern Gaza as advised.

Israeli spokesman has declared Israels intentions to destroy Hamas infrastructure, HQ and buildings in northern Gaza.

Hamas statement tells people to stay in their homes in northern Gaza as the rumours of an Israeli action to come are not true...........

Which of these is trying to minimise civilian casualties?

NEITHER

Babies in incubators in hospital can't be moved. Weakened elderly who haven't had food or water in days can't move.
People with young children will find it almost impossible to move
&

Yet Israel will obliterate them - MURDEROUS

Hamas don't give a fuck - MURDEROUS

And collective punishment is a war crime - cutting power, water, food aid etc. Exactly what has happened here.

War crimes were defined by the Western, largely Christian, Pariarchy. Women and children were protected, privileged. It was men who had to die in wars.

Well we are living in a different world. War crimes will be seen and defined differently.

Toothyfruity · 13/10/2023 13:48

There's only one side wiping the other off the map as we speak and it's the Israeli state who is the perpetrator.

Let's be real here - Israel warning the population to leave in 24 hours or be killed is ethnic cleansing. We all know that it's in bad faith as lots of people cannot leave, the area continues to be bombarded and Israel isn't evacuating people but Palestinians also know that if they can leave they will be unlikely to be able to return. Israel has been stealing land from Palestinians for decades.

The civilian casualties in Gaza are disgusting and horrifying and the people on this thread justifying these deaths are sick individuals. Sick.

Israeli murder of healthcare and humanitarian staff is also disgusting.

There was hair splitting on this thread about cutting off electricity not being a war crime. Well cutting off food and water certainly is.

The blind hatred for Palestinians from supporters of Israel on this thread is chilling and upsetting beyond words. May God forgive you.

BMW6 · 13/10/2023 13:48

So the bombings of all those cities in WW2 were all War Crimes?

All those women and children blown to bits, burned alive in the rubble, maimed for life.
All victims of War Crimes.

Who knew 🙄

Queucumber · 13/10/2023 13:48

I find it hard to understand people trotting out the phrase ‘open air prison’ to describe Gaza when we have seen in graphic detail exactly why Israel tries to keep its border to a Gaza closed.

Syria
yemen
baltic
china

A small sample of the torture genocide and human rights abuses for last ten years. How come this is the only place getting coverage on the topic of brutal regimes and murders?

there are 50 other Arab states- what help are they sending? What airlifting are they doing? The Jews of Israel have nowhere else to go. They have to keep their land safe.

What would you do?

Exactly this.

No it’s not ok, neither is what Palestine’s representatives have done ok, and neither is their stated aim of the destruction of Israel and the removal of the Jewish people ok.

HTH.

Lots of people think they were, looking back. Read Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse 5. Look at the iconic photo of the children fleeing the atomic bomb in Japan. The thing is, no one knew these things were happening at the time. We do now, thanks to faster media and social media. Hence the objection to what is currently happening, as we speak, in Gaza. It doesn’t mean nobody cares about what happened in Israel a few days ago.

I don't hate the Palestinians. I have a long and close history of supporting Palestine.
I was a member of the PSC and have done many many things to support them. I'

Anyone who really loves Palestine should be praying that they release themsleves from their support of Hamas who have led them to barbarism which is not who they were.

Only when they do this, and find leaders who will work with Isreal will they really be released from this tragic cycle, and all the cheerleaders on here with your easy slogans of 2 states and a peace deal, should be ashamed as this is never going to happen for them while they continue to support Hamas.
It's only going to lead to thier destruction.

So you may feel all pumped up with your superiority touting slogans for the oppressed while you leave the Palestinians on a road to hell with no end in sight.

Ah you are a we should have just let Hitler get on with it person are you?
Or been less aggressive in WW2, as iit wasn't that bad?
That explains it.

They have to deflect and become defensive and repeat ‘but do you condemn hamas do you condemn hamas do you-‘

I want aid sent to the innocent. I want the violence to stop.

Also you are fools if you don't undrestand that Hamas will support terrorism here in the UK, and they will celebrate the death of your children here when it happens, and justfy it, because we support isreal.

I presume you'll all be back saying they were pushed into it and you understand?

They don't just hate the Jews they hate the West, they hate you and your children and they won't care that you posted nice things on MN abut Palestine, when they come with their bombs to children's events or swords in London restaurnsts, they'll slit your throat and cheer around the world. Fools.

That is who Isreal is going after. And who the Palestinians have allied with.

The only hope for the Palestinians is to reject this evil totally.
Then they have a future.

What on earth are you on about "no-one knew these things were happening at the time?"

Of course they knew it was happening! I can't make sense of this at all

What pictures of children fleeing the atomic bomb in Japan? Are you sure you're not getting confused with the photos of the child(ren) fleeing the American napalm bombing in Vietnam?

Queucumber · 13/10/2023 14:06

Israel isn’t actively targeting civilians. They could, if they chose to, wipe out the entire population of Gaza in a day. They haven’t and won’t. They are bombing and that has killed civilians but if they were genuinely looking to commit genocide the could have killed hundreds of thousands of people in hours.

I thought that was quite well-established and the reason there was such a resistance to memorials to Bomber Command.

TokyoSushi · 13/10/2023 14:13

This is utterly horrendous, on all sides. Horrendous for the Israelis who were the victims of indescribably appalling acts last week and still are victims of ongoing aggression. Horrendous for the people of Gaza, who are now basically trapped, waiting for whatever action Israel decides to take, under a government who are terrorists and absolutely couldn't care less about them.

I think it's impossible to understand how fearful the people of Israel must be after what happened. I also can't understand how the West are basically lining up to say to Israel 'go on then, do your worst.' And Israel really has the money and skills to do something big. The Gazan civilians are trapped and are just basically having to wait for whatever is coming at them (and has already started)

I'm not sure I've ever known in modern times somewhere where there are no aid workers, no humanitarian corridors, no safe country willing to take refugees, and no Western governments 'appealing for calm.'

What a despicable turn of events last weekend, and what a nightmare it's led to.

Well I'm aware that there was some resistance to the Bomber Command memorial but the statue went up and is still there as far as I'm aware.

I know some modern sensibilities were offended that we carpet bombed Hamburg and Dresden, but there was never any suggestion of War Crimes having been committed. Certainly no accusations have been taken forward to The Hague to my knowledge.

FWIW I think the use of Nepalm by USA in Vietnam was a War Crime - even a crime against humanity- but I don't think they've ever been brought to book for it.

Aid workers are. They're being ignored (and in respects of the UN, killed too),

Queucumber · 13/10/2023 14:42

Imagine over 1,500 men crossed the borders into your country in an organised attack, massacred your citizens in horrific ways, from babies to the elderly, raped your citizens and filmed themselves doing it. Then they kidnapped some of your citizens and returned to the territory they were elected to hold using the civilian population and their kidnap victims as human shields.

These men don’t want to negotiate. They don’t want peace. They have clearly stated that they don’t accept the existence of your country. They want to wipe you out. They share a land border with you. They have at least another 8,500 trained fighters. They have a network of tunnels near the border.

Your country already closed the border, built fences, invested billions of pounds in a defence system to intercept and destroy the frequent rockets fired at its citizens from within that territory. Citizens already do national service and have weapons training so they can protect themselves. They have lived with evacuation drills, shelters and safe rooms for years. Millions are spent every year trying to keep citizens safe. You were still attacked.

What would you expect your country to do to protect you?

Beautifulish · 13/10/2023 14:48

Well a first for me getting deleted, but everyone agreed with me before that. Why aren't we allowed to say that Israel might not always be the good guys?

it’s nothing to do with being good. America aren’t seen universally as the good guys or always doing the right things are they? we are still allies however.
