Neighbours Indiana Jones-ing their way into our garden

This is making me seethe and chuckle in equal measure.

At the end of our garden are some big old fir trees, then the boundary fence. After that there’s a little stream, and if you kept going you’d find the fence of the people who live in the house behind (let’s call them Mr and Mrs Jones), then their back garden.

The Joneseseses have just bought a big seating unit thing and plonked it at the back end of their garden (the bit nearest us). It’s about 10ft from my boundary fence and a good 70ft from the back of my house - we’re lucky to have a big garden - and there’s the fir trees as well which make it a pretty thick barrier.

But they decided they want some privacy and put up a big canvass barrier. Fair enough, I don’t care.

Except…

They’ve tied it to our fir trees!

They’ve clambered over their own fence, slung a ladder (an actual LADDER) over the stream, scrambled up the bank, and cable tied the bloody thing to our trees! Without so much as a word!

They did it in the dead of night! Came down the other day to discover the bloody Shroud of Turin cable tied to my trees! The ladder was still there on the bank of the stream.

So obviously, being British and terrified of confrontation, I did the natural thing of not mentioning it to them but instead cutting the fucker down. It’s now in my garage.

And they’ve replaced it with another!! It arrived overnight this morning!

Just to be clear - I don’t care that they want to shield themselves from us. It’s a dark green thing so I can barely even see it. But I can see it, and I do care that they’ve gone on a bloody Navy SEAL Commando mission, twice, to my garden to put the bloody thing up!

Yes I could go and talk to them but a) I’ve never said a word to them before b) they might kill me and c) this is funnier.

But tell me I ANBU please.

A mumsnet stakeout where we all camp in your garden on shift until they do it again?

More practically, a motion activated senior light with a recorded message- something like Bad Boys or Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive?

Installing a security camera is worth it in entertainment value alone.

ODFOx · 25/09/2023 18:14

So they have no foliage at the bottom of their garden but find your foliage so offensive that they felt the need to tie a big green tarp over it?
Firstly you need to use your Brownie skills to make a cowled habit.
Then cat down tarp 2 and replace with the attached: available on Etsy. When they come round to complain, answer the door wearing tarp 1, holding a lit candle, chanting. 😀

wonkylegs · 25/09/2023 18:15

@Dadfromthesea "My in-laws have a 200ft garden. It’s like the bloody King’s."

Ours is 200m (yes metres) long. Everyone who comes to visit says the exact same thing ...."😳you've got a bloody football pitch, have you got a ride on? "
Ours is a bit to wild in places to be the kings but we love it. I thought it was too big at first but I've grown to love it.
Don't have CF neighbours but often have people climbing the (not small) back fence from the field footpath because "they want to have a look/thought it was a good shortcut/ want to nick a plant 🤔/didn't realise it was a garden"

ifIwerenotanandroid · 25/09/2023 18:17

Actually, thanks for the link, @Dymaxion . I'd been looking at statues of deer or wild boar as a present for DH. As a surprise, I was going to set one up as though it was just ambling through the garden - but the price of them! My goodness! A 24 quid crocodile climbing out of the pond is much better & should have even more of an effect on him.

Mumof2teens79 · 25/09/2023 18:18

But...
What I can't work out is why?
It's seems pretty secluded? There are two fences and a row of trees

What exactly are they trying to hide?

lucylulululu · 25/09/2023 18:20

Oh this is the best thread I've seen in ages 😂😂😂 you are so funny OP thanks for the laughs, especially the diagram 🤣🤣

shellyleppard · 25/09/2023 18:21

Omg I'm rolling on the floor!!! Thank you for making me laugh so much!!! I read it in Sarah millicans sexy voice 🤣🤣

weirdoboelady · 25/09/2023 18:22

slightly worried about the OP's politics but have now realised that the people she is worried about have consciences so much (even) worse than NF's that they are invisible without an actual spaceship

notprincehamlet · 25/09/2023 18:22

How are your topiary skills?

Trail cam! Catch them at it.

Yes and motion activated light with speaker that says “What are you doing to us? We don’t like that! Please stop touching us.” In a chorus of voices that sounds like trees protesting.

CaroleSinger · 25/09/2023 18:26

I really could use some of these to keep the weeds down on my allotment. Can I buy said shrouds from you? I can take as many as you can cut down 😉

AngryAndAnxious · 25/09/2023 18:27

VeloVixen · 25/09/2023 16:43

spider

this sort of thing

@Blue444 pp did post a link.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 25/09/2023 18:29

The more of your posts that I read OP, the more I think that is like to go for a pint with you.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 25/09/2023 18:32

Dig one of those pit traps and cover it with branches?

BlueMongoose · 25/09/2023 18:32

Put up a big fence, and grow spiky climbers up it. And in the circs, I'd make it an ugly one on their side.

Coatscoatscoast · 25/09/2023 18:32

This has confused me. How is the tarp hanging? If the top is attached to your trees, where is the bottom? Have they created an awning, or a screen? If the latter, have you considered cutting a hole and poking a paparazzi style camera lens through it, for invoking maximum paranoia ?

ohdamnitjanet · 25/09/2023 18:33

Certainlyreally · 25/09/2023 15:36

cut it down again

then have a Garage Sale (or sail)

😆 😆 😆

Delphinium20 · 25/09/2023 18:35

Oh please make this a classic, @MN

It's better than a serial-what next?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 25/09/2023 18:36

I'm intrigued to see if at some point they will try to reclaim their sheets. They clearly know they're being cheeky fuckers, hence the night action. But they're cheeky fuckers with no backbones. Is there a peak sheet removal point where they'll stop being spineless? How many sheets will that take? Or will they just cry about their lost sheets forever?

MidnightOnceMore · 25/09/2023 18:36

This is bonkers. I agree with you OP that chopping it down is far more entertaining than speaking to them about it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/09/2023 18:39

Threads like this are the reason I stay on MN! Please keep cutting them down op!

Dadfromthesea · 25/09/2023 15:59

I have also toyed with the idea of knocking on, coquettishly leaning against their front door, and seductively whispering ‘Your shroud is tied to my fir tree’ to Mr Jones.

Please do this and report back on the response? Maybe Mr Jones is doing this to get your attention, some would say trying very desperately?

MmmALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 25/09/2023 18:41

Funniest. Thread. Ever.

You can buy taxidermy crocodile heads on Etsy. Ships from America. I'm not saying you should buy a few and covertly leave them staring towards the shrouderers but... Hey! We should gather up a posse, don the camo look and keep an eye on them overnight, Mumsnet Predator Vs Neighbouralien. Nerf the eff out of them from the darkness, when they cross over on to our/your land.

delphi13 · 25/09/2023 18:42

This has just made sitting outside with a horrible cold watching my daughter at football reading Mumsnet so much more bearable. Only issue is I look very weird for laughing so much by myself!

I'm so invested on what will happen next. The absolute cheeky fu@kery of them!

Your diagram deserves a spot in an art gallery!
