To ask for wise sayings that aren’t cheesy

The internet is full of inspirational meme quotes that are cheesy, meaningless and shallow. Love laugh life. That thing Marilyn Monroe never said. However, are there are good sayings / quotes / wisdom that you like?

I’ve always liked “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

Grief is love with nowhere to go

It's an ill wind that does nobody any good

When you marry you are picking the grandparent for your grandchildren

washrinse · 21/09/2023 13:37

Maybe it is cheesy but I like "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well". It's not really true is it? But sometimes I say it to my kids when they're upset and I'm cuddling them and it's very soothing.

I also love a quote from Kurt Vonnegut: "if this isn't nice, I don't know what is." I say that a lot to the kids too.

Who digs a hole for someone else, falls in themselves

It's a foreign one so weird translation, basically karma thing

Middleagedmeangirls · 21/09/2023 13:43

These too are similar and very helpful to me when I'm procrastinating or worried about being out of my depth.

Done is better than perfect.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

pinksunglasses · 21/09/2023 13:44

Wherever you go, there you are.

WingingIt101 · 21/09/2023 13:45

Everything in moderation, including moderation.

No idea if it's a proper "known" saying but an old boss of mine used to say it to me and it really stuck!

yeveamgirl · 21/09/2023 13:45

"This too shall pass"

I think this is only really cheesy because it's over used. Ultimately, it's a really powerful statement.

YessicaHaircut · 21/09/2023 13:46

Everything will be alright in the end. So if it’s not alright, then it’s not the end.

NinetyDays · 21/09/2023 13:48

To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone.

Middlelanehogger · 21/09/2023 13:48

Love "this too shall pass"!

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Decisions are made by the people who (bothered to) show up!

Does this count?

To ask for wise sayings that aren’t cheesy

Hindsight is 20:20

You regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 21/09/2023 13:50

"be that as it may". Not exactly a saying but a very useful but gentle retort to any amount of gibberish my kids may come out with to try and convince me they don't have to do something they very much do have to do 😆

Zarah123 · 21/09/2023 13:50

Anything by Rumi ❤️

Bralessandfree · 21/09/2023 13:51

The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 21/09/2023 13:52

Also Terry Pratchett: "if you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy."

I always find this one a tonic when I've seen too many cheesy internet memes 😁

You are the company you keep.

fearfuloffluff · 21/09/2023 13:53

You're a long time dead.

Also, on a similar gothic bent: No point being the richest person in the graveyard

PenhillDarkMonarch · 21/09/2023 13:55

God says: take what you want, and pay for it.

Whether you believe in God or not, I like the duel-meaning truth of it.

cromwell44 · 21/09/2023 13:55

Love that @herewegoroundthebastardbush

PenhillDarkMonarch · 21/09/2023 13:56

I also find myself reminded quite often of Omar Khayyam's...

“Tis all a Chequer-board of nights and days
Where Destiny with men for Pieces plays:
Hither and thither moves, and mates, and slays,
And one by one back in the closet lays.”

mrssanchez · 21/09/2023 13:57

I hate "This too shall pass", somethings don't pass, long term illness, disability etc, it just gets fucking worse.

washrinse · 21/09/2023 13:57

Love that Terry Pratchett one Grin

@Middleagedmeangirls Yes 'don't let perfect be the enemy of good' is one I say to myself ALL the time.

I've also remembered one my lovely Uncle used to say to me, "whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right."

PenhillDarkMonarch · 21/09/2023 13:57

Final one which is also a favourite of mine: Churchill's 'if you are going through hell, keep going'.
