To ask for wise sayings that aren’t cheesy

The internet is full of inspirational meme quotes that are cheesy, meaningless and shallow. Love laugh life. That thing Marilyn Monroe never said. However, are there are good sayings / quotes / wisdom that you like?

I’ve always liked “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

Another truism is:

If the first person you meet during your day is a twat, then it's very likely they are a twat. But if every person you meet during the rest of your day is also a twat, then it's very likely that it's you who are the twat.

There's a Russian one I was once told by a student:

A bitter truth is better than a sweet lie.

It's amazing how many bad drivers some people encounter on the roads before thinking that actually, is it themselves that's the issue... I'm looking at you Jeremy Vine. 🤪

I can't remember it exactly, but my dad would say something along the lines of:

Sometimes when you want a lamb you have to ask for a cow and let the farmer talk you into exactly what you wanted.

And I think it's true. If you want a £2 pay rise.. ask for £20 rise and let them talk you down.
If you want to cut 5 days office to 3 with 2 from home, ask for 5 days from home..
Etc

A variation, and favourite of mine is:

You can't change the person but you can change your reaction to them.

I read that as just chill and ignore them!
