To ask for wise sayings that aren’t cheesy

The internet is full of inspirational meme quotes that are cheesy, meaningless and shallow. Love laugh life. That thing Marilyn Monroe never said. However, are there are good sayings / quotes / wisdom that you like?

I’ve always liked “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

‘Why me? Well, why not me?’ This one works whether you’re dreading something or hoping for it.

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re probably right.

This too shall pass. Although some things don’t, the feelings we experience as a result of them do.

What really irritates me are quotes like "I have a small circle of friends that I trust, get on the wrong side of me and you'll pay" with a random picture of Tommy Shelby or Tom Hardy looking all brooding, like they came up with that drivel.

And then all the facebook friends liking it, "so true Sharon"

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 21/09/2023 14:56

A saying that I saw from a poster on here carried me through having babies and toddlers -

everyone fed, no one dead.

In fact even though we’re well out of the those years I still say it to myself sometimes now if we’ve had a bad day!

Don't read too much into the sayings and such. They're a salve to ease a person's journey, not a guide book or a factual statement.

True. Thank you. X

OliveHenry · 21/09/2023 15:01

One of my favourites from a poster on here a few years ago (but can't remember who, sorry!)

"Never set yourself on fire to keep somebody else warm."

LunaNorth · 21/09/2023 15:04

I also look to the Stoics a lot for a bit of guidance.
I really like ‘we can only begin’ when something seems daunting.

Everanewbie · 21/09/2023 15:07

If you can ignore 'man' and think instead 'person', Man in the Arena speech is pretty inspirational and comforting to those that try hard, and occasionally fail, and to ignore those who don't even bother; making snide remarks from afar instead.

Comparison is the thief of joy

I like 'would it help?'

Embarrassingly a movie quote but it's been a very helpful question for me when contemplating actions. And it's quite broad- can be something very trivial to something very big. Does it help me get to where I want t9 be, however big or small?

Trez1510 · 21/09/2023 15:15

Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.

We've never died a winter yet!

EveryKneeShallBow · 21/09/2023 15:16

“Grief is love with nowhere to go”

Yes, this, definitely.

Who digs a hole for someone else, falls in themselves

It's a foreign one so weird translation, basically karma thing

HA! A person who spent years feeding me lies has come unstuck as he has indeed fallen into the hole all his lies created.

I like ' Listen to your anger and steward it wisely.'

I got this from here too!

Time is precious; waste it wisely.

Also Terry Pratchett: "if you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy."

I always find this one a tonic when I've seen too many cheesy internet memes 😁

I love that!

TotalOverhaul · 21/09/2023 15:31

I love 'Don't leave your brain unsupervised.'

I find it very helpful if I drift off in any way, from feelings of poor me/not fair to dreams of phenomenal success in sport and art when I am lolling on the sofa in my PJs. Very helpful to wrangle your brain as if it was a wayward toddler and set it off in the right direction a few times a day.

TheShinmeister · 21/09/2023 15:33

Poster in the loos on the delivery suite at Canterbury hospital: “We may have arrived by different vessels but we’re all in the same boat now”
and I like:
”Nothing is often the right thing to do and always a clever thing to say”

Coyoacan · 21/09/2023 15:35

Rough translation of my Mexican mother-in-law's wisdom: You are not a little gold coin for everyone to love you

JerkintheMerkin · 21/09/2023 15:37

Whenever I'm shopping with DD and she asks for anything I always tell her "I want costs money".

corlan · 21/09/2023 15:38

I like 'Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.'
Of course money and connections beat both!

JoeLovesGina · 21/09/2023 15:43

My grandma always used to toast "may you live long and die happy", which I really like.

Thatladdo · 21/09/2023 15:44

Its not the destination, its the journey thats important.

Those that mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind.

Basically don't be worried about what strangers think of you
