To ask for wise sayings that aren’t cheesy

The internet is full of inspirational meme quotes that are cheesy, meaningless and shallow. Love laugh life. That thing Marilyn Monroe never said. However, are there are good sayings / quotes / wisdom that you like?

I’ve always liked “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

I remember one of my Mum’s sayings (which her Gran apparently used a lot) was ‘Sufficient unto the day…(is the evil thereof)’, meaning cross that bridge when you come to it! I assume it’s biblical.

You can't serve from an empty cup (ie - make sure you are looked after first.)

cherryassam · 21/09/2023 14:01

To err is human; to forgive, divine

This too shall pass - makes me think of my Grandma who used to say it

We meet no ordinary people in our lives

Velvian · 21/09/2023 14:01

I know it's a MN cliche, but I had never heard it before.
No good deed goes unpunished - it is so true and has made life a lot less confusing just knowing this phrase exists!😅

AlltheFs · 21/09/2023 14:04

You don’t make friends with salad

CallMeMousie · 21/09/2023 14:04

I came across an African proverb the other day: calm seas never made skilled sailors (or something like that). Maybe it's a bit cheesy but it's comforting and helps to ground me when I worry about my DC going through rough patches.

pinksunglasses · 21/09/2023 14:05

Also, a situationist quote which often comes to mind these days..

’The spectacle is sacred, truth is profane’

molotovcupcakes · 21/09/2023 14:07

There’s now’t so queer as folk.

Bookist · 21/09/2023 14:07

The people who mind, don't matter. And the people who matter, won't mind.

Life is already hard, so your marriage (relationship) should be easy.

"Words are like water, once spilt they can never be re-gathered."

It's helped me stay quiet on a few occasions where saying how I really felt wouldn't have been the best course of action!

HeritageBlooms · 21/09/2023 14:10

Feelings are not facts

Bluevelvetsofa · 21/09/2023 14:13

Worrying is like paying a debt you don’t owe.

nearlywinteragain · 21/09/2023 14:20

Another vote for
No good deed goes unpunished

HideousKinky · 21/09/2023 14:21

The truth shall set you free

therealcookiemonster · 21/09/2023 14:23

sorry but all the wise sayings I know are about cheese...

had to get that out of my system... now as to sayings...

"food, sleep, fear - the more you do it, the more it increases" (translated very badly from bengali)
"the one who can cook can also tie her hair" (again from bengali, meaning busy people get things done)

"the strong person is not the one who can wrestle someone down but the one who can control their own anger"
"you will never reach what is not meant for escape what is meant for you"
"no two things have been better combined than knowledge and patience"
"speak good or remain silent"

thecatsthecats · 21/09/2023 14:25

I quite like "life gives you the test first, then the lesson".

"Everything happens for a reason" can get fucked as an expression though.

HideousKinky · 21/09/2023 14:29

This one by the poet Rilke:

"Let everything happen to you
Beauty and Terror
Just keep going
No feeling in final"

When life is challenging I often say it to myself to help me fall asleep

Ihaveawonderfulpartner · 21/09/2023 14:41

As already said, comparison is the thief of joy and I remind myself of this one regularly.
Also, when someone shows you who they are believe them the first time. They know themselves much better than you do.

meatyryvita · 21/09/2023 14:42

Eat that frog - i.e. if it's something you must do but really don't want to, get it done first and so it's out of the way.

coxesorangepippin · 21/09/2023 14:43

Waste not, want not

KimKardashiansKarpetKrab · 21/09/2023 14:43

Red flags don't look like red flags if they feel like home.

PurpleMonkeys · 21/09/2023 14:49

"You ate the steak."

Which I heard in Judge Judy..
I take it to mean that, in some circumstances, you can't really moan after the fact if you didn't speak up before hand.

Can't complain your steak is dry after you've eaten it.. you ate the steak, you pay for it.

"You make em, you pay for em"

I think Judge Rinder and other said that to useless dad's... 🤣

Motomum23 · 21/09/2023 14:49

I'm really surprised no one has said my absolute lifetime moto 'holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die'. It's a buddhist quote and has been my saviour after a very trying childhood and adolescence.

YessicaHaircut · 21/09/2023 13:46

Everything will be alright in the end. So if it’s not alright, then it’s not the end.

I worry about though.
There are awful traumatic, tragic endings.

Maybe I'm being too harsh? I don't know.

Don't read too much into the sayings and such. They're a salve to ease a person's journey, not a guide book or a factual statement.
