To ask for wise sayings that aren’t cheesy

LemonQuiche · 21/09/2023 13:29

The internet is full of inspirational meme quotes that are cheesy, meaningless and shallow. Love laugh life. That thing Marilyn Monroe never said. However, are there are good sayings / quotes / wisdom that you like?

I’ve always liked “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

Old Polish one:

Nie moj cyrk, nie moje malpy

Not my circus, not my monkeys

OMG I used to say this all the time and never knew where it came from - thank you! I got it from a former colleague who was deffo not Polish but we did work in an area with a lot of Polish immigrants so that's really interesting.

DuranNotSpandeau · 21/09/2023 22:26

My Dad said this to me when I think I was moaning about my job...again.

By what % is the situation going to improve just because you want it to?

It was a nice way of saying if you don't like it, stop moaning, get off your arse and change it. I ask myself that question a lot and it spurs me into action.

Yes - a wise lady I knew used to say that doing nothing is always an option.

adviceneeded1990 · 21/09/2023 22:32

Never argue with a drunk or a fool.

Today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday, and all is well.

If you think you are going through hell, keep going.

Justleaveitblankthen · 21/09/2023 22:35

Oh, the one that Cher's mother said:
"Will it matter 5 years from now?
Well it doesn't matter now"

Also I like:
If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got.

It is the wind of heaven that blows between a horse’s ears.

Utterly pointless but totally true.

(and @TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum how pathetic)

301963Laurie · 22/09/2023 00:22

HNRTFT but my Mum always said’if it works don’t fix it ‘ ….totally agree! BIL had a horrible two months investigating Pancreatic cancer, allocated a Macmillan nurse etc and the routine scan he had with his work insurance was completely wrong…can you imagine the terrible fear he went through?

sashh · 22/09/2023 05:26

Not a saying - a poem, I printed it out and put it in the front of my teaching folder.

I woke myself up
Because we ain’t got an alarm clock
Dug in the dirty clothes basket,
Cause ain’t nobody washed my uniform
Brushed my hair and teeth in the dark,
Cause the lights ain’t on
Even got my baby sister ready,
Cause my mama wasn’t home.
Got us both to school on time,
To eat us a good breakfast.
Then when I got to class the teacher fussed
Cause I ain’t got no pencil

The only thing you HAVE to do in life is breathe. Everything else is a choice with consequences.

Nobody has everything all at once.

Never let perfect get in the way of good enough.

ehb102 · 22/09/2023 08:23

Also for situations with difficult people:
Someone is going to be unhappy. Make sure it's not you.

KimberleyClark · 22/09/2023 09:05

The only thing you HAVE to do in life is breathe.Everything else is a choice with consequences.

I was sent on a course at work - Pacific Institute training - which was based around the premise that the only two things in life you have to do are taking up space and dying and that everything else is a choice. Didn’t find it particularly useful tbh.

Bookist · 22/09/2023 10:20

Another couple I like, both from my Spanish Godmother

"A life lived in fear is a life half lived."
"It's always a friend who hates you the most."

Isheabastard · 22/09/2023 10:49

I used to believe in ‘It is better to be kind than right’, but that kind of backfired on me.

I love the one I’ve picked up on Mumsnet ‘Don’t set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm’.
