Days out, wanky names, and whining kids

Tonightsthenight91 · 04/09/2023 21:40

I know ibu and this is a light hearted ish thread. Feeling riled after yesterdays and todays outings.

yesterday went out to a popular attraction with my DC. Very busy with it being last day of summer holidays for most. Today to a local park, some schools have gone back near us and some haven’t.

Both times - EVERYWHERE there were kids crying, whining, parents flustered, kids having tantrums and/or injuring themselves. Sometimes I take a step back and observe scenes like these and think WHY do we do it to ourselves? It seems the vast majority of parents are stressed up to their eyeballs on days out with kids that can’t seem to be pleased. Watching parents struggle whilst sun cream gets slapped on, soggy picnic sarnies, ice creams attracting wasps.

Then there’s the insta mum brigade trying to keep everyone picture perfect for photo shoots getting worked up when their kids aren’t Co-operating shouting at their oh-so-uniquely-named kids to pose/keep clean/don’t go in the mud/hug their sibling. Ugghhh it’s draining to even overhear never mind be in it!

every time kids are around I’m silently cringing at the “unique” name trend some parents seem to be on. Do people not realise the more unique they try to sound they ironically appear more common in the try hard to be different group?! Some that stood out to me were “kitch” 3 siblings called “blue beaux and B” “winter” “Adonis” and the best of all “darling dolce” 🙃

I know iabu I’m just grumpy after a long 6 weeks and sick of having to do child friendly stuff every day. Roll on Wednesday when my DC are back 😂

I agree op! I agree!

It's hideous

YellowHatt · 04/09/2023 21:58

I like the names, they make life much more interesting.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 04/09/2023 22:00

I think I might not quite believe the names.

Probably because 6 weeks of staying at home would drive them equally insane. At least this way you get a change of scenery as a backdrop to the whinging.

Me neither. I’d hate to be a teacher managing the register these days

Very very true

'Winter white' that's what the name evokes to me, if we are talking colour!

fearfuloffluff · 04/09/2023 22:12

My favourite places to go are national trust with membership - not exciting enough for kids to go frantic but still quite nice, bit of an ice cream in the cafe, avoid the crowds and if your kids play up, you didn't pay to get in so you can go straight home without giving a shit.

I don’t get it, why does race make a difference as to whether it’s a trashy name or not?

Personally I kind of like it

NeedMyDress · 04/09/2023 22:13

@Malapataraso I don't understand why the name Winter would be fantastic for a black girl and terrible for a white girl?

Race doesn't determine whether a name is trashy; personality does.

Tonightsthenight91 · 04/09/2023 22:15

Definitely wasn’t expecting this to be a matter of race! I wouldn’t say it’s “trashy” for any child as children can’t be trashy. Try hard yes. But nothing more

Tonightsthenight91 · 04/09/2023 22:15

Try hard on the parents behalf, obviously*

Our registers are fairly tame, no 'yoonique' names and a broad mix of popular names alongside classic names and uncommon names. We've got very few duplicate names too.

IDoughnutKnow · 04/09/2023 22:26

Those kinds of names are frightful. So is putting photos of your children on social media, though. I'd just avoid those people.

National Trust properties are the best bet if you want to avoid common people.

Lovetogarden2022 · 04/09/2023 22:28

My god I went to the playground this morning (first time this summer holiday...I held out until the penultimate day 😂)
My god, the THINGS you see. I came home shellshocked. Parents encouraging their kids to push in front of other kids for the slide, kids having full blown jump up and down tantrums and the parents just giving in, 70% of them were eating constantly, just non stop chewing on utter shite junk food. Even my daughter was a bit gobsmacked at the craziness of it all. Maybe it was the heat?

Fink · 04/09/2023 22:30

I had pet names for my dc that I would call if we were out in a park or whatever. I liked them, and it felt safer to me because random strangers wouldn't hear their real names and they knew from a young age that only I called them this, so if a stranger ever tried to say 'your Mum asked me to take you ...' but called them by the pet name rather than their actual name then they were lying. They got that concept earlier than general stranger danger, which is quite a nuanced message for a toddler.

Maybe people thought they were trashy real names. They were certainly unusual. I don't really care, I still like them.

KylieKangaroo · 04/09/2023 22:47

I've not done many days out these holidays and now I remember why!

QS90 · 04/09/2023 22:48

Yes, saw a weary mum today having to keep telling her three to stop annoying each other, whilst I begged mine to eat the sandwich he'd picked. At least at the park they can't bugger up your house until you take them home to shower.

I know a Winter - born mid-December. I think it's pretty, but I am biased. The names don't bother me, but the WHINGING 😨

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 04/09/2023 22:50

Never been so pleased mine are 17 and 18. Jesus, it sounds like Lord of The Flies

IDoughnutKnow · 04/09/2023 22:52

Maybe it was the heat?

No - it's just crap parenting.

Dragonsandcats · 04/09/2023 22:53

Why is winter ok for a black girl but not for a white girl? I genuinely have no idea.
