Days out, wanky names, and whining kids

I know ibu and this is a light hearted ish thread. Feeling riled after yesterdays and todays outings.

yesterday went out to a popular attraction with my DC. Very busy with it being last day of summer holidays for most. Today to a local park, some schools have gone back near us and some haven’t.

Both times - EVERYWHERE there were kids crying, whining, parents flustered, kids having tantrums and/or injuring themselves. Sometimes I take a step back and observe scenes like these and think WHY do we do it to ourselves? It seems the vast majority of parents are stressed up to their eyeballs on days out with kids that can’t seem to be pleased. Watching parents struggle whilst sun cream gets slapped on, soggy picnic sarnies, ice creams attracting wasps.

Then there’s the insta mum brigade trying to keep everyone picture perfect for photo shoots getting worked up when their kids aren’t Co-operating shouting at their oh-so-uniquely-named kids to pose/keep clean/don’t go in the mud/hug their sibling. Ugghhh it’s draining to even overhear never mind be in it!

every time kids are around I’m silently cringing at the “unique” name trend some parents seem to be on. Do people not realise the more unique they try to sound they ironically appear more common in the try hard to be different group?! Some that stood out to me were “kitch” 3 siblings called “blue beaux and B” “winter” “Adonis” and the best of all “darling dolce” 🙃

I know iabu I’m just grumpy after a long 6 weeks and sick of having to do child friendly stuff every day. Roll on Wednesday when my DC are back 😂

Weird names don’t bother me but parents should think about how dated their choices will sound one day. I’ve now met 2 children called Beyoncé.

In terms of popularity, several girls names called Margot in DS’ year group. We are in a yummy mummy area so Indy, Wilf and Romy are also very popular.

At the risk of sounding like a knob I totally agree with a PP about National Trust places being a better option. We have several lovely parks around us but this summer alone there have been multiple incidents in them: 3 young girls sexual assaulted, water fights that turned into mass brawls and stabbings, dangerous dogs allowed to roam around…

At NT properties I can sit down with a coffee and let my (frankly sometimes feral) DC roam woodlands etc in peace. Obviously you still see children misbehaving at NT venues but the scary volunteers usually nip bad behaviour in the bud!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 05/09/2023 08:09

I think by this time in the holidays kids & parents are on the edge!! Couple that with some decent weather at last & not surprised it’s all gone a bit feral.

With the names Dulce which is pronounced Dolce is a very common Spanish name for girls and means sweet

I don’t love all the talk of ‘plopping out’ kids, though - it’s really misogynistic and also I can confirm mine didn’t ‘plop out’ - I wish they had.

💯

It's a horrible phrase.

Obviously I never meant it literally it's just a phrase.

Trenchfootinthescottishhighlandstoday · 05/09/2023 08:10

Don't the worst dc have the longest names? Heard a Jamiroqui getting told a thousand times to behave last year.

The only thing worse than being out with the kids, is being in with the kids... 😁

Yes, at least it gives the neighbours a break Grin

Has the person who said Winter was trashy for a white girl but not for a black girl been back? They really need to explain their comment.

Bizarre comment. I can only conclude they meant......

Nope, can't come up with anything remotely reasonable to explain such an odd statement.

There's some horrible judgey, wanky comments here

There is. Two names have been mentioned on here as being overheard as a sibling pair and I know that family who are absolutely wonderful and would be so upset to hear the names spoken about in such a sneery way.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 05/09/2023 08:21

@Eastie77Returns

How do you know the "dangerous dogs roaming around" were dangerous? Were they biting people or were they simply off-lead and enjoying the outside?

Also, scary volunteers don't want to be scary but they'll intervene when it's clear the accompanying adult isn't going to bother.

SoupDragon · 05/09/2023 08:26

Days out, wanky names, and whining kids

Plus there are the sneery, judgemental arses who stand there watching you and then come and post nasty comments about your family/their names on social media...

I kind of get what you mean but this is something you think in your mind and not comment🙃

<I’m a BW btw before someone tries to jump on me>

Why is it even ok to think this? What would you say if this was two WW having the same conversation?

And sorry why does being a BW make it ok to call a white girl trashy?

Enjoyingthesedays · 05/09/2023 08:39

Where the heck do some of you live is this is all a regular occurrence?

Yes days out with children can be full on especially if you go somewhere busy, but I have to say I've mostly always found the park to be quite an enjoyable relaxed experience.

Winter is a lovely name, it wouldn't be my choice but I wouldn't say it was trashy and I wouldn't say it's got anything to do with race. Completely baffled by that comment.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 05/09/2023 08:42

YellowHatt · 04/09/2023 21:58

I like the names, they make life much more interesting.

They don’t

MinnieTruck · 05/09/2023 08:45

@PurposefulBear I wouldn’t think anything if two white women were making those comments as it really doesn’t impact my life. Everyone’s allowed an opinion whether you like it or not.

I clarified that I’m a black woman, not because that makes it okay to call a white girl trashy, but because someone commented saying ‘why is something that’s not good enough for a white girl be used by a black girl’ or something along those lines.

I wanted to make it clear that I’m a black woman and I don’t think that it makes a black girl second best if she had that name in comparison to a white girl. For example, if a black girl had the name ‘Chinika’ I’d think that’s a nice name. If I heard a white girl with the name ‘Chinika,’ I’d be confused. There’s definitely names where the same concept applies the other way around.

That’s my take on the person’s comment but they could mean something else entirely, who knows🤷🏾‍♀️ I’m getting ready for work so won’t have time to carry on going back and forth. Enjoy your day!

HayleyhasheKeys · 05/09/2023 08:46

If you heard me shouting to my son in the park you could well think he had a yoonique/strange/made up/chavy name… he has a traditional totally normal name but answers to all sorts of daft pet names!

I think they meant it in an ironic way similar to a child being born in the summer called Winter.

Lilyhatesjaz · 05/09/2023 08:51

When my DD was little we used to some times call her, her fairy name, her actual name is very ordinary, I some times still do even though she is an adult.
I have a very normal first name but was horribly teased for my sir name all through school

Tonightsthenight91 · 05/09/2023 08:52

CaptainJackSparrow85 · 05/09/2023 08:00

I wonder if it depends on where in the country you are. I don’t know but I would be prepared to be that in London for example name-teasing is less prevalent than in, for example, north Norfolk.

Where I grew up (rural area) in the 90s, teasing based on names and surnames was virtually guaranteed unless your name was Sarah Smith.

This is a good point. I wonder if accent has a role to play in whether or not names are “likeable” example Beaux yesterday being pronounced as “bor” so it’s all perspective I suppose.

Literally every comment on here except one has questioned why it’s ok to have two girls with the same name, but to call the white one trashy. It has nothing to do with being “second best” at all…

If it were the other way around heads would be rolling.

Total double standards, and if it were the other way around it would be called racist.

I know of a child named ‘Feral’ 🤣

My jaw is on the floor with this one. Actually feral or like the singer pharrel?

Well that’s the way I interpreted one of the responses written. It may have been meant that way and it may not have.

If someone says, ‘the name Becky (picked a random name) is beautiful for a white girl but rubbish/trashy for a black girl’ there’s nothing racist about that. Perhaps people need to educate themselves on what racism and discrimination really is. Mentioning someone who’s black and white does not automatically mean racism!

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk bows out

Are you sure it wasn’t Roscoe? I’m from an northern ex mill town with no pretensions to wankyness and that would be a totally normal name here.
