Days out, wanky names, and whining kids

I know ibu and this is a light hearted ish thread. Feeling riled after yesterdays and todays outings.

yesterday went out to a popular attraction with my DC. Very busy with it being last day of summer holidays for most. Today to a local park, some schools have gone back near us and some haven’t.

Both times - EVERYWHERE there were kids crying, whining, parents flustered, kids having tantrums and/or injuring themselves. Sometimes I take a step back and observe scenes like these and think WHY do we do it to ourselves? It seems the vast majority of parents are stressed up to their eyeballs on days out with kids that can’t seem to be pleased. Watching parents struggle whilst sun cream gets slapped on, soggy picnic sarnies, ice creams attracting wasps.

Then there’s the insta mum brigade trying to keep everyone picture perfect for photo shoots getting worked up when their kids aren’t Co-operating shouting at their oh-so-uniquely-named kids to pose/keep clean/don’t go in the mud/hug their sibling. Ugghhh it’s draining to even overhear never mind be in it!

every time kids are around I’m silently cringing at the “unique” name trend some parents seem to be on. Do people not realise the more unique they try to sound they ironically appear more common in the try hard to be different group?! Some that stood out to me were “kitch” 3 siblings called “blue beaux and B” “winter” “Adonis” and the best of all “darling dolce” 🙃

I know iabu I’m just grumpy after a long 6 weeks and sick of having to do child friendly stuff every day. Roll on Wednesday when my DC are back 😂

The only thing worse than being out with the kids, is being in with the kids... 😁

Hear Hear! 🤣

googled chesney - I do know the song but never knew the artist! That’ll be stuck in my head all day now

What difference does it make to you what people call their kids? I've taught for years and I've never known a child to be teased because of their name. Kids literally don't care.
One year 20% of the class had the same name. Alfie. Now that was awkward.

CoalCraft · 05/09/2023 07:29

No? Took me a while to figure out what NT stood for tbh. I don't get why you'd think that?

Exactly. It's not done nowadays because we have so much diversity. As you say it's just the multiplies that are an issue. In our school Lily.

EarringsandLipstick · 05/09/2023 07:39

I don’t love all the talk of ‘plopping out’ kids, though - it’s really misogynistic and also I can confirm mine didn’t ‘plop out’ - I wish they had.

💯

It's a horrible phrase.

I've found the opposite. Many examples of children bullied for their names during my career. Children can be very cruel and laugh at others without realising the pain they cause.

DS's friend with wanky name changed it when he went to uni.

NetZeroZealot · 05/09/2023 07:45

I don't believe anyone would lack so much self awareness that they would call their child "Adonis". I know an Apollo, an Agamemnon and quite a few Ariadnes, but Adonis ... no way.

Maireas · 05/09/2023 07:46

It's actually a really nice Greek name (see Lord Adonis). I think Ariadne is a lovely name.

NorthWestThree · 05/09/2023 07:48

I have randomly ended up called my daughter a very weird nickname (story of how it came about way too long and convoluted 😂) but it's stuck... I always wonder if one day we will appear on one of these threads if someone overhears me calling her it in public 😂

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/09/2023 07:49

I’m not a mum so… but why drag your DC out in heat when you know you and them especially if young will get cranky. Not talking about parks or places with water!

when we were over or under 5 our favourite places as DC were parks with free adventure playground (health and safety would have a fit these days but we could be in there all afternoon!). Splash park paddling pool, lido etc. ok our DM did also take us other places but it’s nicer to actually see the inside of a castle etc in cooler weather. Actually a few times when staying on a farm we did do an outing to nearby Bodiam Castle to break the tedium!

I see loads of kids at national trust properties which is great if they’re kid friendly or you can have a picnic.

My DNephew has 2 unique names, one isn’t bad actually! His cousin whose mum thought she was being unique and changed her first name to her middle name as it was too popular has given her DD one of the most popular first names in UK. I’ve got a unique first name and middle name and though they’re nice I really wish I was called Jane sometimes…

FlowersareEverything · 05/09/2023 07:50

@NetZeroZealot
One of Tyson and Paris Fury’s children is called Adonis.

Carebearstare12e · 05/09/2023 07:50

You've got a point about the days out!

It's not fair to take the p out of kids names though. Everyone likes different names, none are inherently good or bad.

True

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/09/2023 07:53

I’m about the last person to look for racism in innocently-meant comments, but why on earth would Winter be an OK name for a black girl, but not for a white?

NetZeroZealot · 05/09/2023 07:54

I know perfectly well that Adonis is a Greek name. The character is synonymous with being extremely good looking, and rather tempting fate to name your child after him.

The fact that it's used for Tyson & Paris's offspring makes me understand more.

PorridgeOnToast · 05/09/2023 07:54

Blu
Beau
Bea (Beatrice)

I think they are lovely names

hattymattie · 05/09/2023 07:55

Crazy register roll call amused me. Link above

Cinateel · 05/09/2023 07:58

I was in a store in Brighton in 1974, in a clothing department, and I saw a little boy causing mayhem in the roundabout style clothing racks, getting inside and running round and round.. The shop assistant asked the mum to get him out, so she shouted out "Get out of there before I come in and batter ya".The little boy emerged and he was the filthiest child I'd ever seen. His tee shirt was so dirty I couldn't see what colour it was. and he had very scrubby blond hair that stuck up at all angles. He then ran off, and his mum yelled "Tarquin! Get back here!"
The shop assistant and I found it very hard to keep straight faces. I often imagine the 53 year old Tarquin and wonder if he's still in Brighton.

There's some horrible judgey, wanky comments here

CaptainJackSparrow85 · 05/09/2023 08:00

I wonder if it depends on where in the country you are. I don’t know but I would be prepared to be that in London for example name-teasing is less prevalent than in, for example, north Norfolk.

Where I grew up (rural area) in the 90s, teasing based on names and surnames was virtually guaranteed unless your name was Sarah Smith.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 05/09/2023 08:01

I was on a train in a holiday area yesterday and it was beyond awful. Think small stopping train craned with families in beach clothes and many large dogs. Tempers were fraying.

Trixiefirecracker · 05/09/2023 08:01

I know of a child named ‘Feral’ 🤣

There really is.

There's a load of judgey crap in Ireland too, don't get me wrong, but I'm continually surprised at the nastiness around names and their association that I read about on MN. It's just not something I experience where I am.

Lastchancechica · 05/09/2023 08:06

You lost me at ‘wanky names’
Crass.
