Days out, wanky names, and whining kids

Tonightsthenight91 · 04/09/2023 21:40

I know ibu and this is a light hearted ish thread. Feeling riled after yesterdays and todays outings.

yesterday went out to a popular attraction with my DC. Very busy with it being last day of summer holidays for most. Today to a local park, some schools have gone back near us and some haven’t.

Both times - EVERYWHERE there were kids crying, whining, parents flustered, kids having tantrums and/or injuring themselves. Sometimes I take a step back and observe scenes like these and think WHY do we do it to ourselves? It seems the vast majority of parents are stressed up to their eyeballs on days out with kids that can’t seem to be pleased. Watching parents struggle whilst sun cream gets slapped on, soggy picnic sarnies, ice creams attracting wasps.

Then there’s the insta mum brigade trying to keep everyone picture perfect for photo shoots getting worked up when their kids aren’t Co-operating shouting at their oh-so-uniquely-named kids to pose/keep clean/don’t go in the mud/hug their sibling. Ugghhh it’s draining to even overhear never mind be in it!

every time kids are around I’m silently cringing at the “unique” name trend some parents seem to be on. Do people not realise the more unique they try to sound they ironically appear more common in the try hard to be different group?! Some that stood out to me were “kitch” 3 siblings called “blue beaux and B” “winter” “Adonis” and the best of all “darling dolce” 🙃

I know iabu I’m just grumpy after a long 6 weeks and sick of having to do child friendly stuff every day. Roll on Wednesday when my DC are back 😂

“Blue Beaux and ”Winter Adonis” and the best of all “Darling Dolce”

Are you sure these weren't Clematis?

fruitnutz · 05/09/2023 06:17

PurposefulBear · 05/09/2023 05:37

You’re saying… there are two girls called Winter.

One is fantastic because she’s black. The other is trashy because she’s white.

I’m sorry this can’t just be let go.

I don't associate winter with whiteness anyway. It's not very snowy here. Some posters are really weird about 'white' associations. I seem to remember there was a discussion about the baby name Ivory once. They wanted to know if the girl was going to be white or not to determine if the name was unacceptable. Reasoning being that the mother* *must be secretly motivated by white supremacy, wishing to honour the 'whiteness' of the child Hmm

She denied this and posters said they'd assume the family were racists anyway and she should pick another name. Confused

'Light hearted' to mock and berate childrens names and turn your nose up at them? OK... Hmm

Yeah not a good look OP. Shall we all sneer at your name?

CoalCraft · 05/09/2023 06:22

The names are probably not the children's real full names. Families tend to use pet names and nicknames. B could be short for Beatrice, for example.

Fairyliz · 05/09/2023 06:42

Oh yes the constant eating of junk food. Why do so many people seem unable to parent their children without constantly resorting to bribing them with rubbish food?
In the future this will be seen as bad as giving them a slap for misbehaving.

You go to NT properties a lot don’t you? 😂

Morning! Feeling less grouchy now I’ve slept it off. Just have to get through today and it’s sayonara 8:30 tomorrow 👋🏼 😅

glad it’s not just me at the end of my tether! Some of the names mentioned - wow - Sloane and Rothko I can literally hear getting shouted. And Woody I know a few of too.

For those that asked it was because the mother was standing behind me in a queue saying to 2 out of 3 siblings b”blue you have this one, beaux you have this, let’s get this for B.. where is B is she with dad” etc. and no she wasn’t pronouncing the X but how else do you spell it?

PS to the poster that jabbed - my name is also shit I’m named after a one hit wonder! Lots of people love it but I quietly die a little every time I have to tell people it so actually, I feel I’m on these kids side!

home stretch guys!

My favourite places to go are national trust with membership - not exciting enough for kids to go frantic but still quite nice, bit of an ice cream in the cafe, avoid the crowds and if your kids play up, you didn't pay to get in so you can go straight home without giving a shit.

Yeah, this. I would never in a million years take DS to a theme park in the summer holidays. Inset days or October half term at a push.

It’s Chesney isn’t it

LlynTegid · 05/09/2023 06:52

The unique names are unkind, and the policy in France that there used to be of only ones from an approved list has some merit. I understand it only ended because it did not recognise names from people with a different heritage or ethnicity.

Oysterbabe · 05/09/2023 06:52

Whereabouts in the world are these kids with crazy names? My kids are Y1 and Y3 and all the children have very ordinary names. There are 3 called Ava in DS's class and 3 called Max in DD's.

how would race and or ethnicity factor in this?

definitely one of the more unpleasant (and completely unreasonable!) comments I’ve encountered today on mm.

Somerset!

I live in Wiltshire and the kids in my son's class are fairly average - Riley, Ava, Ben(edict), William, James. Pop over to Frome/Bruton and it's a free-for-all.

Yep, definitely Chesney. Or Chumbawumba, but I’m praying for Chesney on your behalf OP.

I feel attacked 😂

My child has a unique name. I have a unique name. Who wants to have the same name as 5 other kids in their class? Every person is an individual, give them individual names.

LylaLee · 05/09/2023 07:04

As pp said, I used to call my child a nickname in public that we never used in real life, for 'stranger danger' reasons.

I'm thinking Dolce was a nickname by someone with an Italian partner/parent themselves.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/09/2023 07:06

Quite like Dolce.

I am pretty certain it wasn’t a nickname. Even if it was would they not just say darling? Rather than shouting “darling dolce! Darling dolce! DARLING DOLCE!” Around a playground?

and no definitely not dulcie it was pronounced doll-chay

Disappointingly my name is not Chesney but I’m off to google who that is 😂

NortieTortie · 05/09/2023 07:08

I'm a bit baffled by Winter and Beau considered out there/try hard. They seem like nice, normal names.

ShoesoftheWorld · 05/09/2023 07:09

Are you Sabrina, OP? (And you don't know who Chesney Hawkes is? Shock )

pinkiepie91 · 05/09/2023 07:14

The only thing worse than being out with the kids, is being in with the kids... 😁

RichardsGear · 05/09/2023 07:16

It's Tiffany, isn't it? Also thank f mine are all teenagers, although that's a whole other set of issues!
