I’m clearly a pig for washing dogs bowls in the dishwasher

My SIL has just expressed absolute shock and disgust at the fact I use ordinary China bowls for the pets that we also use) and put them in the dishwasher afterwards? Maybe I’m missing the point but they are WASHED thoroughly?? AIBU??

My cat has his own plates, but I wash them in the dishwasher with human dishes. I can’t see the harm.

Newfluff · 26/08/2023 22:08

Hmm, dogs have their own bowls and you couldn't pay me to eat out of them.

But I don't mind them licking my plate, because they get washed.

DumpedByText · 26/08/2023 22:09

Not something I'd do to be honest. My cats have their own bowls that go in dishwasher with our stuff.

LulooLemon · 26/08/2023 22:09

Yes, URBU. Get the dog it's own bowl and hand wash it.

MerryBeard · 26/08/2023 22:10

Tell her that you also wash the toilet brush in there. Then the pet bowls won't seem so bad.

We put dog bowls the dishwasher every day. We've done it for a decade and we're all still here and healthy.

Yeah, SIL is right. That’s really gross.

LittleBearPad · 26/08/2023 22:11

Pet bowls in the dishwasher here. Why wouldn’t you

fabmaccawhackyrhumbsaloft · 26/08/2023 22:11

My dog bowls are sanitised in the dishwasher. They have their own bowls , washing in the dishwasher means everything is clean . What's the issue ?

PonyPatter44 · 26/08/2023 22:11

My dog and cats all had their own bowls but they were washed in the dishwasher when they were dirty. However I also washed my bits and stirrups in the dishwasher, which I realise some people would think was gross.

QuiltedHippo · 26/08/2023 22:11

I'm pretty slobby by mumsnet standards and I wouldn't share a dish with my dogs, and they go in the dish washer separately- though pretty infrequently.
In theory I know its fine but I can't shake the ick

Anothernamethesamegame · 26/08/2023 22:12

Sounds really gross to me. However I’m not a dog person..and dogs licking faces seems gross to me too.

They are cat specific bowls but that doesn’t seem the key point

Woahtherehoney · 26/08/2023 22:12

I wash my cats bowls up every day in the sink but will occasionally throw them in the dishwasher and it’s never caused any problems for us so will carry on doing it! They do have their own bowls though

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 26/08/2023 22:12

That's pretty gross. Dishwashers don't sterilise. Get the dog his own bowl and hand wash it. Mine has her own washing up brush too! (Not that she does her own washing up yet.)

hungryalways23 · 26/08/2023 22:13

Our dogs have their own bowls but they do eat leftovers from our plates sometimes often. I wouldn't be keen if we were just hand washing the plates but as they go through the dishwasher at 70 degrees I can't get worked up about it. My dogs lick my face too. Never been unwell from it.

What needs sterilising?

NeedTheSeaside · 26/08/2023 22:18

I assumed Son in law, but Sister in law does make more sense!

IMO dogs & cats should have their own dishes. i hand wash them & dry them on paper towel.

id be pretty grossed out if you put them in without giving them a wash first.

Dishwashers blast food around in the 'cleaning' process & most people don't keep their dishwashers very clean, washing filters etc.

I don't think it's very hygienic, and being vegetarian it grosses me out, but most pet food isn't going to harm you, even if you eat it..

Why would a dogs bowl need sterilising?

By the time your pets have licked you and slobbered everywhere etc there is no point being overly clean with their bowls. If you wash them in the sink, so you then sterilise the sink? What do you do with the sponge you use?

Iloveacurry · 26/08/2023 22:20

I put my dog’s bowls in the dishwasher! 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

WunWun · 26/08/2023 22:21

Dishwashers don't sterilise things. I know a vet who told me that studies have proven that some germs aren't killed in the dishwasher.

I still put my cat bowls in though 😁

XenoBitch · 26/08/2023 22:22

What is the problem here?

Do people have separate washing machines for tea towels and underwear?

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 26/08/2023 22:23

At least it's not your toilet brush 😉

WunWun · 26/08/2023 22:23

Haha! I was just about to ask if anyone remembers the thread where a poster said she put her toilet brush in there 😁

Dishwashers do sterilise actually. That's why you can prep jam jars in them when you're making jam. Just need to do a hot enough cycle.

We wash our dogs bowls in the dishwasher. We wouldn't share bowls with them though, they have their own.
