My SIL has just expressed absolute shock and disgust at the fact I use ordinary China bowls for the pets that we also use) and put them in the dishwasher afterwards? Maybe I’m missing the point but they are WASHED thoroughly?? AIBU??

I wash my hamster's bowls in the dishwasher, I have 3 sets, one in the cage, one in the dishwasher & one clean ready for next feed.

Theoldwoman · 27/08/2023 00:25

I do the same. They are only used once , then rinsed and go through the dishwasher

doroda · 27/08/2023 00:33

Gross 🤮

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 27/08/2023 00:45

My cat’s bowls go in the dishwasher with everything else. If they’re all in there at feeding time she gets her dinner in one of my cereal bowls. Do I care - not a bit.

OMG op, a dishwasher does not automatically cleanse all germs.

almostoverthehill · 27/08/2023 01:04

🥱 what a non issue

foulksmills · 27/08/2023 01:05

Ewwwwwww

Floralnomad · 27/08/2023 01:14

My dogs dishes go though the dishwasher , I can’t see the issue as the water is so hot .

Ndd135632 · 27/08/2023 01:17

Dog has own bowl but it’s food so nothing wrong with it going in the dishwasher. The heat kills things more than handwashing I would think

inonan · 27/08/2023 01:20

Bowls are rinsed first (as is anything before going into the dishwasher), then washed separately from our crockery on a short wash.

merrymelodies · 27/08/2023 01:26

A dishwasher sanitises everything so I don't see the problem.

Tiddlywinks63 · 27/08/2023 06:25

My dog has her own bowls and they go in the dishwasher.
My SIL puts dinners plates and bowls on the floor for the dog to lick before they go in the dishwasher, that makes me 🤢

Aprilx · 27/08/2023 06:49

I cant see the issue with putting dog bowls in the dishwasher but it is odd that you don’t actually have dedicated dog bowls.

BoobyDazzler · 27/08/2023 06:50

My dog bowls go in the dishwasher but then so does my dog on occasion… he’s a very useful pre rinse.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 26/08/2023 22:12

That's pretty gross. Dishwashers don't sterilise. Get the dog his own bowl and hand wash it. Mine has her own washing up brush too! (Not that she does her own washing up yet.)

Not in the same sink that you wash teacups in, I hope!

Poppysmom22 · 27/08/2023 08:38

I put my dog bowls in the dishwasher it washes at 70 what's living through that?

Express0 · 27/08/2023 08:45

Dog bowls, cat bowls, my horses bit, it all goes in the dishwasher with our stuff.

Elfandwellbeing · 27/08/2023 08:47

this is why I don’t eat or drink in houses where people have dogs. Ekkkkk grim.

BackAgainstWall · 27/08/2023 08:48

I think she’s got a very valid point.
We often put ours and the dog’s plate in the dishwasher together.

DilemmaDelilah · 27/08/2023 08:51

In our house pets have their own bowl, never eat off ours, and NEVER allowed to lick our plates. Pet bowls are always washed separately, never in the dishwasher, and have their own washing up brush/scouring sponge to wash them with.

Strugglingtodomybest · 27/08/2023 09:02

My dogs' bowl doesn't go in the dishwasher, but only because it's not dishwasher proof.

We put our plates down for the doggie 'pre-wash' before they go in the dishwasher though.

belge2 · 27/08/2023 09:05

I put dog bowl on DW with our stuff. Not a problem. But I don't like idea of dog eating from bowls / plates we use ...

Thankfully we have a utility for that, and the dog gets fed in there so all the smelly tins are out there and get rinsed out there too.

It doesn't.

Not unless you also sanitise your dishwasher each time
