My SIL has just expressed absolute shock and disgust at the fact I use ordinary China bowls for the pets that we also use) and put them in the dishwasher afterwards? Maybe I’m missing the point but they are WASHED thoroughly?? AIBU??

My dog has her own dishes that go in the dishwasher worth everything else. We are in good health so can't see an issue with it.
I also wash my knickers with the dish clothes.

MN is an always a good reminder that you should refrain from eating food prepared by other people whose domestic hygiene standards you do not know about.

MN is a reminder of how many people base their behaviour on OTT visceral reactions rather than any kind of logic or real consequences.

This.

Washing your pets’ stuff in a different sink is not ‘cleaner’. Stick it in the actual dishwasher with actual crazy chemicals.

MN is also a good reminder of the strange and privileged assumptions people make about the way everyone lives. Most people don't have a utility room.

Dishwashers don't sterilise plates.
Animal dishes need to be washed separately.

They need to? What is your evidence for that? And what are the actual consequences of not doing so?
