My SIL has just expressed absolute shock and disgust at the fact I use ordinary China bowls for the pets that we also use) and put them in the dishwasher afterwards? Maybe I’m missing the point but they are WASHED thoroughly?? AIBU??

A dishwasher sanitises everything so I don't see the problem.

Everything always comes out perfectly clean with no food left behind? Unfortunately, a dishwasher throws all the food bits around in a soup and everything gets it all over before it's rinsed. Also, it doesn't sanitise.

ChristmasFluff · 27/08/2023 09:12

My cats have their own bowls that I put into the used washing-up water to soak, and then I rinse them off and wash with my next (hand) washing up - with my own crockery and cutlery.

It's not like they piss or poo in the bowls, so what's the problem?

horseyhorsey17 · 27/08/2023 09:13

Would've even occur to me that this is weird. Because it isn't.

She just lacks very very basic understanding about the process of either a dishwasher or handwashing.

My dog and cats all had their own bowls but they were washed in the dishwasher when they were dirty. However I also washed my bits and stirrups in the dishwasher, which I realise some people would think was gross.

Horses don't lick their own bums though like dogs 😂

Doingmybest12 · 27/08/2023 09:22

It's just how she feels about it,it's not logical . I would never have washed the dogs bowl in with our hand washing up but I feel fine about putting his bowl in the dishwasher with our stuff. I wouldn't use the same china bowls as my pets, but sometimes they have their food in an old takeaway tub I feel ok about washing and using for humans food to be stored. Not thought about that too much. Might stop doing that now.

KimberleyClark · 27/08/2023 09:25

My SIL puts the dog’s bowl in the dishwasher. She’s a senior hospital consultant with a PhD in something to do with disease transmission. Has books in the bathroom too.

loislovesstewie · 27/08/2023 09:32

Well we are clearly oinkers together. I've just unloaded the dishwasher and taken out 2 cat bowls, a dog food dish and the dog water bowl. Neither the cat or dog seem to mind.

Happy Sunday people!!

God that has made me laugh! Jut off to clean the toilet seats!

You need to buy a better dishwasher.

Excellent and helpful explanation of how to sanitise the dishwasher afterwards.

Turns out modern dishwashers do sanitise…

@Pocketfullofdogtreats you sound a bit batshit and clearly have no understanding of how a dishwasher works. Yes, of course everything comes out clean. If it doesn’t, you’re either not following the instructions properly or you’ve bought a rubbish model? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Re-reading what you wrote, are you putting plates with food still on them inside the dishwasher? Obviously, you’re meant to scrape off the food first. 😂

Rubyupbeat · 27/08/2023 09:53

My dogs have their own bowls, but lick our plates, they all go into the dishwasher, though.
I see no problem with what you are doing.

vjg13 · 27/08/2023 09:56

Dog dishes washed in the sink on their own, no dogs upstairs or on the sofa and no licking human faces. And I absolutely adore my dogs!

Tessisme · 27/08/2023 09:57

I don't mind the idea of dog bowls going in the dishwasher. I really hate to see dogs licking plates that humans normally use though. Maybe it's illogical, but it makes me want to heave. DS2 refuses to eat anything off a plate in MIL's house after seeing the dogs licking crumbs etc off plates. I feel the same, but somehow manage to overcome my aversion when faced with a large slice of cake😆

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/08/2023 10:02

It's totally fine. Dishwashers clean things, with detergent and very hot water. I'm unsurprised to see the usual load of over-fastidious, germ-phobic pearl-clutching on here though. Has anyone retched yet? I always wonder if the super-sanitisers imagine they are healthier and less frequently struck down by illness than the rest of us. I bet it's quite the opposite!

As for those who say they woneat or drink in a house with pets, there is plenty of evidence that having pets, especially furry ones, is good for your health in a variety of ways, including boosting your immune system and making you less likely to have allergies.

@Deathbyfluffy I know it can be confusing, but “gross” isn’t actually a scientific term.

Nevertheless, another poster has already linked to a good article explaining it.

Which is an advert for Clorox. It’s not the gotcha you think.

AlwaysOften · 27/08/2023 10:46

I think it’s unreasonable to expect normal hygiene practices from pet owners. Sharing bowls with dogs is just another example of the low standards they have.

TaniaBania · 27/08/2023 10:57

Having pets is associated with a healthier microbiome.

Sonolanona · 27/08/2023 11:02

All bowls go in the dishwasher here.
Had pets all my 50+ years of life and not suffered!
(She also licks the plates clean now and again!)
TBH I think my toddler grandson is probably more unhygenic on a day to day basis and I don't wash his special plates separately either !!!
Why do plates need to be sterile, we aren't performing operations on them!?

user76541055773 · 27/08/2023 11:13

I’m just blown away by all the people on here who eat out of dog bowls. I guess every day is a school day.

Zanatdy · 27/08/2023 11:16

No way. My dog has his own bowl, I wash it by hand. It’s a dog bowl. I never let him lick plates etc - even if cleaned that’s just something I don’t do (do let him kiss me though!)

megletthesecond · 27/08/2023 11:19

Yanbu.
As long as any gunky bits and hair are wiped off its fine. Dishwashers nuke stuff at a high temp.
