My SIL has just expressed absolute shock and disgust at the fact I use ordinary China bowls for the pets that we also use) and put them in the dishwasher afterwards? Maybe I’m missing the point but they are WASHED thoroughly?? AIBU??

Did you put their bowls in the dishwasher?

Yes, all the time.

Snittle · 26/08/2023 22:49

Dog is raw fed and has her own bowls, but they’re washed in the dishwasher. We do sometimes plate food up for her on a human plate and let her eat from that, but we don’t put dog food on human plates.

Yes, all the time.

Do you empty your dishwasher filter regularly? Do you clean the inside of your dishwasher regularly to remove hairs between each wash?

Womblegreen · 26/08/2023 22:52

My dogs lick their own, and the others’, bowls spotlessly clean of food. Obviously they are not clean and need washing. They go in the dishwasher, I’ve always assumed it was close to sterilising. However I would never eat from their bowls and I don’t let them near our crockery.

The cat is less scrupulous, so her bowls are scraped clean of food and then go in the dishwasher too.

madeinmanc · 26/08/2023 22:53

Disgusting and unsanitary.

TheYadaYada · 26/08/2023 22:53

Our dog has his own bowls but they go in the dishwasher with everything else.

Yes, I did. No hairs.
A moot point now really, as I have not had a dishwasher in years. Is all done by hand now.,

CherryMaDeara · 26/08/2023 22:54

I don’t care as it’s your house but this would sicken me in my own home.

They do not otherwise you wouldn't have to buy a bottle steriliser if you had a dishwasher

You don’t have to buy a bottle steriliser if you have a dishwasher. A dishwasher is a massive steam steriliser.. the clue is in the clouds of steam and boiling hot plates it produces. There is no such thing as a bottle steriliser in the US and Canada where every house has had a dishwasher for 60 years. The UK was much more backwards with dishwashers being less common and bottle sterilisers are as a hangover of that.

A dishwasher is a perfectly good way of cleaning dog bowls and gets rid of almost all likely pathogens. I accept a dishwasher is not an autoclave (for the PP who said it doesn’t kill EVERYTHING) but nobody is going to use a dog bowl in surgery, are they.

Pet bowls in the dishwasher here. Why wouldn’t you?

Ours need washing after each meal, especially during hot weather. Who runs a dishwasher 3 or 4 times each day?

MrsCarson · 26/08/2023 22:59

We do pet bowls in the dishwasher too OP, you aren't a slob or gross or anything else. SIL is being ridiculous.
We did baby bottles and teets in the dishwasher too, after a few months old.

We have more than one bowl per pet so just get new ones out the cupboard and put the old ones in the dishwasher with all the other used plates Confused

FiddleLeaf · 26/08/2023 23:02

Rinsed under the hot water tap and popped in the dishwasher.

Loulou560 · 26/08/2023 23:02

I wash the dog bowl in the sink with washing up liquid then put it in the dishwasher too. I think nothing of it TBH.

Topseyt123 · 26/08/2023 23:04

When I had pets (two dogs and a cat) they all had their own bowls, which were washed in the dishwasher.

I did this for the best part of 20 years and nobody came to any harm. I don't see any problem.

margotsdevil · 26/08/2023 23:09

I wouldn't use the same dishes for the cat that we use ourselves but he has his own set of bowls that absolutely go in the dishwasher.

76evie · 26/08/2023 23:11

My dog has its own bowls but they go in the dishwasher with the rest of our plates. I always run the dishwasher on the 70° hygiene wash so presumed it was ok. 🤷‍♀️

deClutterBugz · 26/08/2023 23:13

I don’t trust the dog with my crockery, he has his own bowls. But they do go in the dishwasher with the people-dishes.

I put my bin lids in the dishwasher too (but not with the plates - I’m not that gross).

LittleBearPad · 26/08/2023 23:16

I put our bins and bin lids in the dishwasher when we go on holiday.

Though, agreed, not with the plates

RhymesWithTangerine · 26/08/2023 23:17

MN is so weird. All those people that think hand washing gets something extra clean. It absolutely doesn’t.

OP, YANBU. the chemicals in the dishwasher tablets are hardcore. You couldn’t get anything cleaner than that.

hennaoj · 26/08/2023 23:17

I suspect my 9 year old son is much more disgusting than my dog, especially when I look at the screen on his ipad! My 12 year old son has to be reminded to wash his hands after using the loo. Putting the dog bowls in the dishwasher will be fine.

Moroccanqueen · 26/08/2023 23:17

I’m surprised at how many people do this 🙃 the thought of it turns my stomach

YourWinter · 26/08/2023 23:17

I no longer have a dishwasher but if I did, the dogs’ and cats’ bowls would go in it. As it is, they have their own forks, bowls and plates and they’re hand washed after every meal (so twice a day), usually the last items to be washed, rinsed and left to dry.

Tinktravels · 26/08/2023 23:19

That's disgusting to be honest

Yeah, SIL is right. That’s really gross.

I agree.
