My SIL has just expressed absolute shock and disgust at the fact I use ordinary China bowls for the pets that we also use) and put them in the dishwasher afterwards? Maybe I’m missing the point but they are WASHED thoroughly?? AIBU??

That's nothing, my inlaws have a dishwasher that washes cold "to save money", ie doesnt sterilize/isn't hot enough to kill ANY bacteria.
They leave it open whilst loading and let the dogs lick each dirty plate on its way in whilst loading it.😖

Ridiculous! My dog acts as the pre-wash before anything goes in dishwasher! SIL sounds like an annoying hygiene freak!

Just no. They lick their and other's arses. She is not being a "hygiene freak" fgs

All those of you who won't put a pet bowl in the dishwasher because it's gross/germy/disgusting etc, are you just using the kitchen sink instead?

The one that will also be used for washing up, and water for wiping surfaces etc?

What's the difference and why don't you trust your dishwasher that does a better job than hand washing?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/08/2023 20:42

MN is an always a good reminder that you should refrain from eating food prepared by other people whose domestic hygiene standards you do not know about.

MN is a reminder of how many people base their behaviour on OTT visceral reactions rather than any kind of logic or real consequences.

The main reason I don’t use the dishwasher is because I only put it on once every 1-2 days (single person) and my cat gets three smallish meals per day, so I don’t have enough bowls. Also, his bowls aren’t the ideal shape for my dishwasher (they won’t slot into the plate rack) so it would mean having to put the dishwasher on more frequently to accommodate the sacrifices I had to make to fit them in.

But also it does give me the ick a bit to think of pet-food-infused water swilling around other things in the dishwasher. For me it’s nothing to do with germs, it’s my aversion to pet food. My cat even has his own fork which I use to put it in his bowl.

He has his own washing up sponge for germ reasons (bacteria survive quite happily on sponges) and because pet food stinks. There’s no risk of me getting the sponges mixed up because his stinks of royal canin despite thoroughly rinsing it.

As for dogs licking plates, I’m sorry but it’s just disgusting.

Is it? Gosh, I had no idea.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/08/2023 20:54

@IDriveMySupernova, I solved that problem by buying several shallow tin plate style cat food bowls that fit easily in the dishwasher.

Dishwashers have several rinsing cycles so nothing comes out contaminated with pet food.

If I feed him from a shallow plate he just nudges it all onto the floor Grin maybe that’s the solution - feed your pets straight from the kitchen floor and then you can just disinfect the area when they’re done.

My dogs have their own bowls but they lick my plate and bowls after which doesn’t phase me at all

Twilightsparkly · 27/08/2023 21:53

I do not have a dishwasher, but my dogs have their own bowls and never would I ever eat out of them, regardless of how many times they've been washed 🤢

Redebs · 27/08/2023 22:07

Dishwashers don't sterilise plates.
Animal dishes need to be washed separately

No, I would expect someone to use a utility room sink, the one reserved for clothes that r washed at 40 so can kill bacteria, or other revolting stuff like pre soaking trainers. I would not expect someone to wash a dog bowl in a kitchen sink, also gross. Only exception being if they pour boiled water straight into it.

And YES you can catch things from dogs (!) Worms, fleas, also there is an illness called toxocariasis in dog poo that can blind humans. Google it. Some dogs also enjoy eating horse manure etc., so anything that has been licked by a dog to my mind must be washed under the assumption it has this bacteria, I'm not prepared to risk my children's sight to save precious foofoo's feelings

Lol the prerequisite expectation being they have a utility room 😂 The closest I have is a garden hose.

merrymelodies · 28/08/2023 00:08

My dishwasher absolutely sterilizes plates (and everything else I put in it). On the drying cycle.

ChillysWaterBottle · 28/08/2023 00:10

I put my dog and cats dishes in the dishwasher shrug emoji

merrymelodies · 28/08/2023 00:13

I have to chuckle at people who're apparently disgusted by putting dog bowls in the dishwasher when most of them (the dog owners) are perfectly happy to let their dogs lick them and share a bed with them! Dogs lick other dogs' bums and god knows what other filth... revolting!

BaaCode · 28/08/2023 00:31

My dogs bowls go in the dishwasher.
If I've fried meat, I put some water in the pan after to let it soak and the dog goes mad to slurp it all up.
I always give everything a quick rinse under the tap before it goes in the dishwasher anyway.

MidnightMeltdown · 28/08/2023 03:07

Cats have their own plates here, and they get washed separately by hand.

I don't want bits of manky cat food in my dishwasher 🤢

BarbaraofSeville · 28/08/2023 03:46

No, I would expect someone to use a utility room sink

FFS, I knew 'just use the utility room sink' would be the proffered solution to this issue.

This Place. So as well as the expectation that people shouldn't have any children unless they can guarantee that they will always be able to sufficiently feed and house them to appropriate MN standards without any compromise or outside assistance (each child has their own room, large enough to accommodate a double bed, in a house located in walking distance to the right schools, a grocery budget large enough for unlimited organic protein and imported fruit and vegetables etc etc) then we now have the additional requirement that people shouldn't have pets unless they have a utility room with a sink to wash their food bowls in.

Meanwhile, back in the real world......

LittleBearPad · 28/08/2023 08:50

I didn’t expect the oral sex diversion in a dishwasher thread. I suppose whilst humans may lick other humans it’s less likely they lick their plates. Does this make it better?

AvocadotoastORahouse · 28/08/2023 09:35

Using the same bowls as your pets really gave me the ick from your OP. That is the gross bit for me. Humans and pets should def have their own. Im def with SIL on that, it's yuck!!

I have a dog and hand wash his bowl separately each day with an assigned sponge.

Now and again I will put his bowls in the dishwasher for a hot wash by themselves. I do this just before I'm doing a dishwasher clean (run empty on the hottest cycle with a cleaning bottle of stuff stuck in the cutlery basket) so I feel like the dishwasher is clean again for our dishes afterwards.

He is not allowed to lick plates etc as a normal 60c dishwasher wash isn't hot enough to kill all the bacteria from his mouth.

No, my dog bowl is washed out in the utility room sink. Nothing else is washed in that apart from occasionally scrubbing some trainers!
