My SIL has just expressed absolute shock and disgust at the fact I use ordinary China bowls for the pets that we also use) and put them in the dishwasher afterwards? Maybe I’m missing the point but they are WASHED thoroughly?? AIBU??

My dog and cats all had their own bowls but they were washed in the dishwasher when they were dirty. However I also washed my bits and stirrups in the dishwasher, which I realise some people would think was gross.

I had to read this a couple of times with eyes like saucers before I realised you don't actually wash YOUR bits in the dishwasher!

AllotmentTime · 26/08/2023 22:25

If you cook raw chicken would you put the utensils etc from that in the dishwasher?

I don't really see why the cat bowl germs are less likely to come off than the chicken germs tbh.

Trenchfootinthescottishhighlandstoday · 26/08/2023 22:26

How is horse meat residue any worse than other meat in the dishwasher imo...?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/08/2023 22:27

Our cat has her own bowls, but they go in the dishwasher with everything else. Sometimes she licks our plates, because she is a greedy little predator, and occasionally even what we are actually eating - I can’t get worked up about it because I am a filthy slattern.

UndercoverCop · 26/08/2023 22:27

Cat has his own bowls which have no trace of food left in them (to try and trick the next person in the kitchen to feed them), quick rinse and into the dishwasher like everything else

jlpth · 26/08/2023 22:28

I put the dog food and water cups in the dishwasher. In my defence, the dog doesn’t eat other dog’s shit or anything like that. And my husband kisses the dog on the mouth anyway.

moomoosaka · 26/08/2023 22:30

That is disgusting. It doesn't sterilise them and I imagine dog hair clogging up your filter and being swirled round until you clean it. Get them their own bowls and hand wash them.

peanutcrumble · 26/08/2023 22:33

That's really gross and the reason I wouldn't take a cup of tea off anyone who has pets 🤢

I have 5 dogs (also a litter of 5 pups so 10 altogether atm) I have a sponge, washing up liquid in the garden and wash the dogs bowls under the tap outside everyday.

Dishwashers do sterilise.

Why is there dog hair in the food bowl ?

Do you eat out? You have no idea what happens 😂

ItJustFellOutLikeWordVomit · 26/08/2023 22:34

Well my dog has her own bowls but does also have leftovers from mine….and they all get washed and are fine - my dog is not one to sniff other dog butts / let them sniff hers or do a lot of “personal hygiene” but regardless if we are being honest we know our mouths have had more than a sniff of someones bits so maybe they should be disgusted at us…😂😂😂😂

Why would dog hair clog up a dishwasher?
What about the washing machine?

Whatnotasurprise · 26/08/2023 22:36

Our dogs, who have dried food, their bowls are sterilised in the utility room sink several times a week. I just don’t personally like the idea of their food bowls in with our stuff (and there’s never enough room anyway).

People with dogs often end up with dog hair on their washing.

MarshmaIIow · 26/08/2023 22:37

Yuck, it's manky. I don't think dishwashers always do a good job.
But I think homes with pets are dirty, so I wouldn't eat in one anyway.

IDriveMySupernova · 26/08/2023 22:38

My cat has his own bowls which I handwash with a separate sponge. I’ve seen people let their dogs lick or eat from human plates, it makes me feel sick. Dogs eat other dogs’ shit.

Just out of interest, are you a Traveller or Gypsy? I've always been told by Traveller people that they won't have tea with country people because they don't trust us to wash our cups up properly !

TaniaBania · 26/08/2023 22:39

Our dog has his own bowl but also eats from ours occasionally and they all go in the dishwasher together. He also licks the plates already in there if he gets the chance (aka prewash). Couldn’t care less- we’re all still alive. No idea why anyone would need their crockery to be sterile, you’re not doing surgery on it.

Homes with pets are dirty….ok hahaha. I really struggle if is this for real or a troll? Surely it has to be a troll

I have a dog, and have had multiple long haired cats. Not once was there an issue with animal hair in the dishwasher.

peanutcrumble · 26/08/2023 22:42

@PonyPatter44 yes gypsy.

Jarstastic · 26/08/2023 22:44

Used to wash cat bowls in the dishwasher. Does need to be minimum 65degrees to kill germs so the eco wash at 50 degrees won’t cut it.
Our current dishwasher is 60 degrees or 70 degrees and I don’t want to put glasses in a 70 degree wash. So cat bowls would have to go in with eg saucepans.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 26/08/2023 22:45

No, I wash my cats bowls by hand using her allocated sponge. I then clean and spray the sink with disinfectant and another allocated sponge. I don’t let my cat lick our plates, bowls, cups or utensils 🤮

Did you put their bowls in the dishwasher?

tonyhawks23 · 26/08/2023 22:46

Yes I find it so disgusting, same as sharing any utensils with pets or putting dog bowls on the table/work surfaces etc, so grim. Dishwashers dont kill tapeworm.

They do not otherwise you wouldn't have to buy a bottle steriliser if you had a dishwasher
